COBRA is a system of 8-dot uncontracted braille consisting of 240 one-character representations for lowercase and uppercase letters, punctuation signs, mathematical symbols, and foreign-language characters. COBRA is designed for blind students in mainstreamed educational settings to simplify written communication. When used on a braille notetaker with LCD output or on a refreshable braille display that is connected to a computer, COBRA provides direct braille access to electronic texts and allows print readers to instantly read in print the student's text output. The benefits of COBRA have been recognized particularly in the areas of mathematics, science, and foreign languages.
