      Emily's Guide for Sighted People to Better Understand The Blind

MY BLIND NEIGHBOR IN KANSAS CITY, KANSAS

      I'd like to tell you a story.  A long time ago I didn't know any 
blind people.  I lived in Kansas City, Kansas and I didn't have a car so 
I did a lot of walking around.  I had a neighbor who also walked around 
the neighborhood quite frequently.  He was blind.  So occasionally I 
would meet him on the street and I would quietly step out of his 
way....wishing that I knew how to greet him like I would anyone else that 
I passed on the street so frequently.  
      Like a dunce I passed him on the street day after day but I never 
had the courage to start a conversation.  I just didn't know how to do it 
and to introduce myself.  I didn't know how to start talking.  So every 
day I would quietly step out of the way and let him pass and say nothing.
      So this web page is dedicated to that neighbor in Kansas City, 
Kansas....who I never met.....never said "hello to"....never communicated 
with.  
             Here's to communication........
        and to better understanding between the sighted and the blind.
