Now, he's making a strong return to the stage in the musical "Almost Heaven: The Songs of John Denver", running through Sunday at the Diana Wortham Theatre. This joint production with Asheville's N.C. Stage Company, is a sweet, uplifting showcase of Denver's many hit songs, sprinkled with spoken nuggets about his up-and-down life. Five talented singers, backed by live musicians, give fine performances of his tunes, laying on the harmonies with skill. Anyone who loved John Denver will enjoy this show, which goes on a national tour after its local production. While Denver was mostly known as the squeaky-clean Jimmy Stewart of folk music, the guy did have an edge and raised his voice against social injustice. He also went through some bad spells, including a couple of drunken-driving incidents and cheating on his loving wife, Annie. "Almost Heaven" wisely doesn't overlook his flaws, but doesn't dwell on them either, and gives us a mostly bright portrait of Denver. Ryan Nearhoff has the main male acting role, delivering the singer's thoughts and comments. Rosie Mattia takes the main female lead, speaking for a Denver fan, and wife Annie. The other three players (Alex Hanna, Benjamin Zip Misek and Vernae Taylor) all get their moments too. With images projected on a rear screen, theis ensemble, directed by Randal Myler, brings Denver's music to life. Among the highlights are "Rocky Mountain High," "Thank God, I'm A Country Boy", "Leaving On A Jet Plane," "Back Home Again," and especially "Calypso", with its amazing vocal blend. The show has a surprising feel-good finish that leaves the audience clapping along and wanting more. ================================================== JOHN DENVER PEACE CLOTH joins PEACEFUL BLUE PLANET ================================================== The John Denver Peace Cloth is proud to announce its new association with Peaceful Blue Planet. Wind caressed my cheeks and Mother Earth While blowing leaves and icing snow Yet was gentle as a lullabye Awakening sleeping fawn and doe. So I "...(let) the breezes surround (me)" Whispering like water through a sieve And "..bearing..good tidings.." from John's spirit "Sweet taste of love...", they would not leave Now lifting up my ear I listened To dear John's "Wind Song" so profound "Respect the wind, nature, and each other..." Words that could never be time-bound. ___________________________________________________ Copyright by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com SONGS OF THE WIND by Emily M. The fees for drawings with matting and board are $100 for b&w and $125 for color.
