John Denver was one of the world's best-known and best-loved performers, who earned international acclaim as a songwriter, environmentalist and humanitarian. His music spanned three decades, outlasting countless musical trends, and garnering numerous world music awards and honors, including the 1996 induction into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, and in 1993 the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Music award. New Zealand entertainment company, Event Entertainment, will present all of the performances down under. The production is slated for theatres through New Zealand in 2008 and Australia in 2009. Harold Thau described John Denver as "an extraordinary warm and caring man, an uncommon friend and a rare human being." Thau has produced theatrical productions in New York, which include the Off-Broadway of "Almost Heaven: Songs of John Denver", as well as the Tony Award winning show "Spring Awakening" and numerous productions in London, Los Angeles and Aspen. He has written a best-selling autobiography entitled "Bronx to Broadway - A Life in Show Business." < < < < < * * * * * > > > > > "Meet Dunedin's Own John Denver" Otago Daily Times (New Zealand) September 10, 2008 by Nigel Benson Dunedin musician Bevan Gardiner turns 21 today, but he has already been given the best present he could imagine. The partially sighted John Denver fan is about to take the lead role in an international show on Denver's life and music. The world premiere of "Whisper the Wind" opens in Dunedin next week. "It's a really big thing for me. I've never done anything like this before," the former Logan Park High School pupil said yesterday. "It's challenging, but it's going to be a fantastic experience. I've been a big John Denver fan for about 14 years...He has a crystalline quality to his voice and he sings songs from the heart." Gardiner travelled to Aspen, Colorado, last year for the 10th annual John Denver Tribute Week, where he met Denver's mother, Irma Deutschendorf, and brother, Ron Denver. "They were great people. His brother's a really hard case." Gardiner has been partially sighted since birth. "I've got between 5% and 10% vision, so I can see colours and outlines of people, but that's about it. But it's never stopped me from doing what I want to do," he said. "Someone takes me on and off stage, but we're going to experiment with a set of rope lights going to the microphone. Once I'm at the mike, I get a feel for where everything is." Gardiner has won awards for the past three years at the Gold Guitar Awards and Country Music Awards of Australia singing the Denver songs "My Sweet Lady" and "Whispering Jesse." He has lived all his life in Dunedin and is studying for a bachelor of music degree at the University of Otago. He has a guide dog, Denim. Gardiner has been rehearsing for "Whisper the Wind" over the past week with six international musicians. The show features 25 of Denver's songs and family footage of the singer edited at TaylorMade Productions in Dunedin. Promoter Dennis Brown said United States promoters had been "austounded" by the similarity between Gardiner and Denver. "We sent Denver's long-time business partner, Harold Thau, a tape of Bevan singing and John singing and said "which one is John Denver?" He said "What are you talking about? They're both John Denver." Denver died on October 12, 1997, when the aircraft he was piloting along the California coast crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Monterey Bay in California. He was 53. "Whisper the Wind" opens at the Regent Theatre on Saturday, September 20. < < < * * * > > > Aspen Friday Afternoon Concert, for Aspen-October-Weekend by Judy Therrien Well-known and loved-by-many, are folk singers Steve Gillette and his wife, Cindy Mangsen. They will be coming to Aspen to entertain us and share their music in the Aspen Community Church, Friday October 10 at 2:00pm at their afternoon concert. Steve and Cindy's songs are stories which weave fun tales and keep alive music from yesteryear. Each year Steve and Cindy crisscross the USA presenting concerts by the dozens. In the middle 1960's, Steve co-wrote the song "Darcy Farrow" that is familiar to so many. When John first drove into L.A. from Texas in 1965, Steve Gillette was working at the Cosmos at Seal Beach and John walked in and asked him if he could audition. Come to the concert for the rest of the real story, and more! You might have seen that Steve was featured in the August 2007 issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Steve and his wife Cindy have released over 15 cds over the years and you can hear some of their favorites on XM radio each week on the folk music channel. Log onto www.compassrosemusic.com for fun reading. A few years ago they presented a concert at the Kennedy Center in New York City. Songwriters are familiar with Steve's book "Songwriting and the Creative Process" which is the most respected and widely used book of its type in songwriting circles. Accompanying herself on guitar, banjo, concertina, or mountain dulcimer, Cindy's repertoire ranges from haunting traditional ballads to songs by diverse writers with a few of her original and very clever songs thrown into the mix. Cindy began performing professionally in 1976 and can be heard singing harmony on many albums, including several of Tom Paxton's recordings. We are truly fortunate that Ellen Stapenhorst will open for Steve and Cindy. Ellen lives in Paonia, Colorado and has visited Aspen-In-October many times, mesmerizing those that hear her play and sing in the Mt. Chalet. Ellen sings with pizzazz but can also sooth with the same voice, speaking magically to your inner soul. Besides presenting concerts, she works with Tom Crum presenting many kinds of workshops. Her lifelong interests center around environmental issues, social justice and peace, all which infuse her music, writing and artwork. For more info, please see www.ellenstapenhorst.com See you in Aspen! Safe and Happy Trails to All! We will spend the day at John's Beach (the turnout at Ocean View Blvd. between Acropolis and Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California) starting at noon un Sunday, October 12th. (High tide is at 9am that day, and so there won't be much beach to clean until close to noon.) Last year was very cold at the beach and that made it hard on both instruments and fingers. Please check the weather reports for the area before coming out to the beach, and plan accordingly! The tribute will start at 5:00pm with a minute of silence at 5:28pm. If you have any questions, please email me at this address. I'll respond as soon as I can. Regardless of the weather or whether each of us can make it to Pacific Grove this year, we'll be together in spirit, each of us remembering John's life, his music, his message, and what he means to each of us wherever we might be. And that's warmth enough and light enough to last us until we meet again. So, until October - Peace, Love and Understanding John Denver: The Legacy Continues...
