The festival, which debuted in Aspen last summer, brings world-class athletes to town to lead clinics and demonstrations in various disciplines. It used the Silver Circle Ice Arena as its home base last year, but the rink will be a construction zone this summer. Event director Peter Johnson pitched use of the Sanctuary at the council's noon meeting. But Councilmen Tom McCabe and Tony Hershey - the only two council members in attendance weren't crazy about a beer garden, live music and a vendors' tent at the sanctuary. Both suggested Johnson explore other sites. The Hildur Anderson property, along the Roaring Fork River on the east side of town, was mentioned as an option. The city recently acquired the parcel. "I'm not crazy about events happening at the John Denver Sanctuary," McCabe said. "I'd like to encourage you to look somewhere else locally. I do take the word 'sanctuary' as meaning sanctuary." "I think of the sanctuary as a place of quiet contemplation," Hershey agreed. "We have a little time, so let's look at other options." Johnson suggested the Aug. 23-26 festival could use the sanctuary without damaging impacts. "It's a nice setting for what we're promoting, which is getting out in the outdoors," he said. The sanctuary was created by the city, along with fans and private donors. The late singer's fans would have something to say about use of the site for the festival, McCabe predicted. "I'll get emails from all over the world on that one" he said. * * * * * John Denver Song at 2002 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies =========================================================== George Zinn I am from Salt Lake City, and as many are aware, we are the site for the coming Olympic Winter Games of 2002. A few years ago, John came to our city and performed an outstanding concert that was free to all in his personal support of the bid for the Games to come here. Following the show, our mayor told the audience that John expressed a desire to be invited back during the Games as a guest performer, to which our mayor offered a hearty invitation. Unfortunately, that will not occur, but I feel that we can do the next best thing in remembrance of our beloved John Denver. John recorded a song called "The Gold and Beyond", an excellent number that is reminiscent of the spirit and soul of the Olympics. I am petitioning the Salt Lake Olympic Committee executives to include this as part of the Opening Ceremonies for the Games in honor of John. I wish to solicit the help of all you great John Denver fans in encouraging and contacting the Olympic officers to consider this number in the show. Please contact me at so we can show our support in vast numbers that we wish the song included. I will, in turn, forward all emails and messages to the Olympic Committee. George Zinn P.O. Mardy's life is chronicled from her humble beginnings to her marriage to Olaus Murie, and continues throughout the present with her dedication to their work for and with the environment. She and John were with President Jimmy Carter at the White House when he signed the critical Alaska Lands Act Bill in 1980, protecting the region commonly known today as the ANWARR. John is also shown three times in the film, and mentioned for his dedicated work with the environment. One of the wonderful visits to Mardy was when he sang "A Song For All Lovers" on her front porch at Moose, Wyoming, after the Wildlife Concert in 1995. - - - - - - Wendy In the March 14th issue of the Jackson Hole News it was reported that by early April, Congress would decide whether the land in the Arctic Refuge will be drilled to extract oil. Because of this threat, Bonnie Kreps and Charlie Craighead are mobilizing to distribute videos of Mardy's film. The Alaska Wilderness League will be distributing nearly 1,000 copies of the film to Congress and their staffs in early April. * Information on ordering is in the Want Ad Section. * <*>*<*>*<*>*<*>*<*>*<*>*<*>*<*> David Brower, 1912 - 2000 Elaine Byrne I just received the Winter 2001 IN BRIEF, the quarterly newsletter of Earthjustice (formerly Sierra Club's Legal Defense arm). There is a eulogy to David Brower, one of John's most admired people and the person who inspired "Let the Mountains Talk, Let the Rivers Run." Here's the text: "The Earth lost one of its greatest champions with the death of David Brower last November 5. Brower was an editor, writer, mountaineer and photographer; the first executive director of the Sierra Club; founder of "Friends of the Earth" and the "Earth Island Institute." He pioneered the use of full-page newspaper ads, the publication of calendars and posters to celebrate the beauty of the planet, and scores more innovations now taken for granted. He inspired uncounted thousands to work for the preservation of the Earth. He was a great fan and supporter of Earthjustice and a friend to many on the organization's board and staff." "Buck Parker, Earthjustice's executive director, said 'Dave Brower challenged his fellow conservationists to be more ambitious and less apologetic in combating the institutions and practices that are destroying our human and natural environment. He could, and readily would, inspire us, cajole us, and goad us - occasionally all at the same time. He symbolized the passion and reverence of all those who work to protect wild places and left and unique and lasting mark on the environmental movement and the American scene.'" <*>*<*>*<*>*<*>*<*>*<*> ====================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== JOHN by Liz Seger He walked through the world with his guitar slung across his back his heart open his arms too and lived just to sing for his friends. He never backed away from a cause he believed in which he picked and chose wisely. Never a predator, always the catalyst for change, for community, for consciousness, for love, for peace. He sang of the ocean, the children, the jungle, the beasts and the birds, the mountains, windsongs, and spirit. He sang of broken dreams, hearts and homes, about winning and losing from his own life and experience. His voice is stilled now and his guitar no longer sings except in the hearts of his children, of his family, of his friends, and in us, his fans. _____________________________________________ Copyright 2001 Liz Seger A SOFTER SCENE by Emily M. Reverend Graeme frequently uses John's songs in his church services, and requested a John Denver video evening for the occasion. We showed "John Denver - The Hollywood Story" and the "Wildlife Concert" to a gathering of 16 happy folk along with a potluck dinner. Since last November's tv screening of "Take Me Home - The JD Story" and the "Hollywood Story" the Foundation has been receiving a resurgence of inquiries about John and what he stood for. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Leon Lang I teach school in Minneapolis, MN where Annie was born and raised.
