Parris Phil Christie grew up on Toronto, Canada. His first release (in 1986) was a debut single of "Anytime Now." He recreated John Denver's vocals for the CBS TV movie "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story." "I Dream of Colorado" is the song on this album that will remind you of John. It has beautiful lyrics and a wonderful tune, subtly mentioning John in the words. Another one of my favorite songs on this album is "Mother's Day". It is a moving tribute to Phil's mother. "She shines upon me now like moonlight in the rain. She listens every time I sing." To anyone who has ever lost a mother this song will be very meaningful and full of love. Phil Christie is a wonderful lyricist. The words really conjure up a picture of the stories he is telling in the songs. "Enchanted" is a very uplifting song. He's "enchanted, amazed and overjoyed!" You couldn't find words any more uplifting than those. "Karl The Koala" is a humorous song about a Koala Bear that is sure to bring a smile. On a more serious note, "Don't Ask Me To Lie" is about a friend who is cheating on his wife. "Skeleton" is a very interesting and unusual song. It is featured in the movie "Jacks or Better." Phil says on his web page that "If a song moves the listener in some way, or speaks for them, than I know I've accomplished my mission." Phil's songs surely do that and I would recommend this album. http://www.philchristie.com < < < < < * * * > > > > > Review of Pete Huttlinger's "Santa Rita Connection" by Jim Ohlschmidt Acoustic Guitar Magazine Few guitarists achieve the kind of fingerstyle perfection Pete Huttlinger does on this outstanding solo effort. Whether he's flying through the complex changes he's devised for Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" or gently rhapsodizing on his own "McGuire's Landing" and "Goodbye Chester," he's in total command of his Collings OM1-A. With stunning arrangements of "Sunny" and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," where he plays the bass line, horn parts and melody simultaneously without breaking a sweat, Huttlinger continues mining the rich vein of Top 40 Covers he began on 2002's "Naked Pop." But he's also composed several great tunes, including "Hortensia," "Tommy in the Morning," (written for Tommy Emmanuel), and "Darcy's Guitar," one of the simplest and prettiest melodies in his repertoire. Titled after the "patron saint of impossible dreams" (according to the liner notes) the "Santa Rita Connection" is a dream to listen to. <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> ========================== WHAT I DO IN HONOR OF JOHN ========================== I like this corner of the newsletter. My oldest son, David John is now 25. For his 21st birthday I bought him a guitar and a John Denver song book at HIS request! He wanted to learn "Jet Plane" and "Annie's Song" to woo the ladies...Another interesting coincidence - We live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, where John and Annie lived when his career took off. David John went to New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico (John Denver's birthplace) and completed his undergraduate work in Fort Worth, Texas (where JD went to high school). David John is currently in medical school in Houston. My middle son, Zachary, was named in honor of John's son. I loved the name and the special where he sang the Christmas song for Zachary. I play and sing it for my "Z"... even though he's now 15. He is a bass player. Hillevi Peterson-Hirsch < hillevi@visi.com > Roseville, MN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I honor John Denver every day in many ways. I recycle and reuse whatever and whenever possible. I plant trees, flowers, etc., feed birds and wildlife, clean up trails, even sidewalks and parking lots where I find trash left by careless humans. I play his music and love to introduce others to his music and to the man he is and his wonderful heart. I support the Wildlife Conservation Society and other organizations that care for wildlife and children in need (World Hunger and Red Cross). I try to live by his example. Love life. Share Life. Love the earth and protect her! I guess the thing that means the most to me, is in my Will, I have left money from my life insurance to go to The Windstar Foundation and WCS so that his dreams will have an opportunity to carry on.. Peace for us all! We are so blessed to have had John Denver in our lives and to have been taught such wonderful things!
