Maybe we were tired of a decade of America-bashing. Whatever the reason, with his Dutch-boy haircut, his granny glasses and his voice as clear as the mountain air he invoked in his songs, John Denver struck a chord. Denver - born Henry John Deutschendorf in Roswell, New Mexico - expressed a deep 70's yearning to escape a complex age. To the scorn of sophisticates, his songs paid homage to nature, love, family and "country" values. What would you expect from a man who spent his boyhood summers on a farm in Corn, Oklahoma? Sixties coffee-house folk music was already on the wane as John Denver left Texas Tech in 1964 and joined the Chad Mitchell Trio, later known as Denver, Boise and Johnson. When the going-nowhere group disbanded in 1969, it was Denver who nobly assumed their $40,000 debt. Money worries would soon be history, as Denver - an Air Force brat raised in towns throughout the Southwest - became one of the most successful recording artists and live performers in the world. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was a million-seller in 1971. "Rocky Mountain High", inspired by Denver and wife Annie's move to Aspen, Colorado, went platinum the following year. And you couldn't turn on a radio in 1974 without hearing "Annie's Song," "Sunshine on My Shoulders" or "Back Home Again" - each of them a mega-hit. Appropriately, Colorado's then-governor John Vanderhoof named John the state's poet laureate. The words and melodies that some viewed as saccharine and naive, and others as sweetly honest, continued, with 1975's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and "I'm Sorry". It seemed Denver could do no wrong. Even his screen debut, a folksy turn opposite comedian George Burns in the 1977 film "Oh, God!" earned accolades. Denver's appealing, boy-next-door image was largely accurate. Nevertheless, his marriage to Annie endured well-publicized ups and downs; she finally asked for a divorce on their 15th anniversary, in 1982. He married singer Cassandra Delaney in 1988, but they divorced shortly after the birth of daughter Jesse Belle in 1989. What John later called a dark night of the soul followed: he was arrested in Aspen in the summer of 1993 for drunken driving; a year later he totaled a Porsche. Both raised eyebrows among those for whom he had been an icon of wholesomeness. As he confessed in 1995, "I've had a few difficult years." But Denver - a hope-springs-eternal optimist who committed a great deal of time and money to the environmental causes he loved - bounced back. In the end, it was his zest for flying, a long-time hobby, that took his life. He was killed on October 12, 1997, when the small experimental aircraft that he was solo-piloting plunged into California's Monterey Bay. It was an ironic coda to the life of an artist whose songs lifted so many hearts, and whose first major success as a songwriter - a big hit for folkies Peter, Paul and Mary in 1969 - was "Leaving On A Jet Plane." __________________________ PEOPLE Weekly's Special Collector's Edition celebrating the 70's is a glossy, well made journal that is more like a book than a magazine. The VERY best part of the vacation was attending the Country Roads Folk Fest at the Almost Heaven Farm in West Virginia. What a great time! The weather was perfect, the location was beautiful, the entertainment was non-stop, and the Tribute to John Denver was memorable. I'll never forget hearing 1/2 of the Starland Vocal Band sing "Afternoon Delight" that day. Mack Bailey's emotion-filled performances of "Potter's Wheel" and "What Are We Making Weapons For" were also big highlights. I felt honored to be in the presence of those many talented people. Thanks to the organizers for a really fine event. I really encourage everyone to take a trip somewhere this summer or fall. Maybe you'll find a place that demands that you sing "Country Roads, take me home, to the place I belong..." While driving home from the Folk Fest it struck me that I finally understood these words from that song..."dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eyes." That's exactly what the Blue Ridge mountains looked like in the moonlight and that's exactly how I felt after that joyful day of music. FAR OUT!!....Friends with you, Carolyn * * * Mary Ledford I attended the first annual Country Roads Folk Festival at Almost Heaven Ranch in West Virginia. It was fabulous. The weather held out and it was a beautiful day. I would guess there were about 1000-1500 people in attendance. I had a booth for John and managed to sell a few things and had quite a few people come up to me and ask about John. The performances were wonderful ... a majority of them I had not heard of but they were fantastic. There was a group from England called "Artisan" who sang a cappella. I haven't heard a group sing a cappella that well since the Starland Vocal Band did with Paul Simon's "American Tune." Speaking of the Starland Vocal Band .. 1/2 of them were there - Bill Danoff and Margot Kunkle. Doris and Sean (Side by Side) were there too along with Mack Bailey. The tribute to John was great. Tom Paxton closed out the show with his usual humor and then invited all of the performers to do two last songs...one being "Take Me Home, Country Roads." It was a phenomenal day and much of the credit goes to Maureen Harrigan of the WFMA for all her efforts to make this a very special day. ========================= CD R E V I E W S ========================= Review of "Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver" (Various Artists) by Cindy Westover The John Denver purist may have some difficulty with the poetic license taken in changing some lyrics to "Poems, Prayers and Promises" (performed by Rachel Haden) and to the alternative musical interpretations of "Matthew" (Granafloon Bus) and "Looking for Space" (Hannah Marcus); but, this tribute may really bring John's music back for a new generation. I was touched by Bonnie Prince Billy's soulful rendition of "The Eagle and The Hawk" and with James Hindle's "Whispering Jesse" tribute. While some will listen with the ear of an older generation, I believe these young, independent artists have captured the lyrics and meaning of John's songs and attached them to today's new music genre. I highly recommend this cd for those who are willing to take chances on something new! * * * Review of Paul Swanton's MY TIME TO FLY by Cindy Soares Dear Emily, I saw that you posted a note for the purchase of Paul Swanton's "My Time To Fly" CD. I would like to share with your readers how good this CD is. I first saw Paul in Aspen in October 1999 and listened to just a few songs. He is what I would describe as an all American kid, straight blonde hair and the round glasses. Although we didn't speak, I listened to a song from the CD called "Echoes." "I hear echoes in the wind I hear echoes of the sea, and Oh how I wish I could change things, your voice is still singing to me. And at times you made me love to laugh sometimes all I wanted to cry, and I want you to know that I'm missing you so tonight" he is singing for John. And I hear those words and I know the songs that he was talking about, the ones that made me laugh and cry. I later met Paul in person and he is wonderful. He is wholesome and his songs come from his heart. His love for John's music is in these songs on this CD. For the fans of JD this is a treat. I cannot find the words to describe his voice, but maybe if someone out there got this CD they could find the words to describe how good this kid is, even if he is not a kid. He sure seems one at heart. Cindy * * * Review of Montana Tunesmith's UNDER YELLOWSTONE SKIES by Emily M. Parris "Brother John" is the song dedicated to John on this mellow, easy going album that celebrates nature. In the album jacket it says.... "I grew up listening to John Denver on 8-track tape. His melodies impressed me most as a young boy. As a young adult it was his conviction and his belief in preserving nature that impressed me." The song celebrates John and his interest in preserving all things natural. The cd mentions the virtues of Montana as well. In "Montana Therapy" the lyrics talk about returning to the mountains of Montana for renewal, and the cute song "Small Montana Bar" talks about their local establishments. "Castin' For Cutthroat" talks about an idyllic summer spent fishing in the Beartooth Mountains. The song "The First Snow" tells about the first flakes that fly in the winter and the lovely "Little Aurora" talks about the night his daughter, Abigail Laura was born. Two songs ("Spirit of Yellowstone" and "Under Yellowstone Skies") were inspired by his time working as a seasonal park ranger in Yellowstone National Park. I liked this album. The lyrics are interesting; the themes remind me of a John Denver album and the tunes are easy going. They celebrate nature, wild places and the loving ties of family and home. This folk duo is made up of brothers Tim and Mike Nordstrom. Their website also has links to other information about Montana: http://www.montanatunesmith.com You can email Tim at: ===================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== "Your Example" by Louise Madison The eagle circles overhead, The river flows along. Thanks to Cheryl for organizing this. We had quite a large turn out for the sewing of the peace cloth. We were also caught on video...Channel 26, a local cable station turned out and took lots of video of the work on the cloth and our local guitarists - Dwight, Bruno, and Cindy who did an amazing concert of John's music. The cloth is magnificent. We got only about half of it sewed together and it is probably more than a city block in length and we're still getting in cloth. It is huge. Everyone worked hard sewing, designing, and just having a great time. We had a great potluck and then a wonderful concert with Bruno playing and singing and us singing along. He is a real treat to hear. I want to thank everyone from the Pacific Northwest Windsong group who came from all over to work on this cloth. Thanks......DEB * * * Another Story: Lana Zincon I called my paster and asked if he thought it appropriate that I bring the peace cloth that I am working on to church. He not only said it was appropriate, he spoke about it and included the cloth and I in a prayer during the service. He allowed me to show the cloth and speak a bit on its origin and what's going to happen in New York City... Early on in the service he mentioned that "we will not remember the men who wrote the laws, but we will remember the men who wrote the music." You should have seen me scrambling for a pen...I immediately thought of John. ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= The Windstar Land Conservancy received $5,000 from Aspen's "Environment Foundation" to provide ecological restoration of a 2-acre parcel on the Windstar land in Old Snowmass.
