Prior to the concert, guests gathered in the Peabody Library for a VIP reception and silent auction. Auction items included artwork, wine, sports memorabilia, local getaways to Fenwick Island and St. Helena Island, and international trips to Paris and Ireland. Friends and supporters of the school's community health programs then moved to Peabody's Concert Hall for the sixth Nightingala event. The concert, held in conjunction with the Music Unites the Soul of Everyone (M.U.S.E.) Foundation, featured performers John Sommers, Jim Salestrom, Chris Nole, Mollie Weaver, Jim Horn, Bill Danoff, and local favorites Mack Bailey, Kenn Roberts, Ira Gitlin, and the musical group, The Hard Travelers. In the tradition Denver established in his performances, the band was accompanied by the Columbia Orchestra - a full 30 piece orchestra. The money raised by the sixth Nightingala event will be used to provide health services such as immunizations, health screenings, physical exams, preventive measures, parenting and nutrition classes, referrals, geriatric services, obesity awareness, and after school programs. <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> "Void That John Denver Left After Untimely Death Being Filled Door-to-Door in Utah" By ERIN CLARK The Standard OGDEN, Utah - It's winter in Utah. Slush lines the streets and the dark clouds that shroud the Wasatch prophesy that more snow is on the way. Most people are snug inside their homes or working away in heated offices, but not Paul Larson. He's walking door to door, portable CD player in hand, giving folks a chance to listen to his music in hopes that they'll hear something they like. Paul Larson is a handsome, fair haired thirty-something family man whose music has been compared to John Denver more times than he can count. The soft, nature inspired music that Larson has presented on two CDs, "Songs from the Soil" and "Returning to Roots" have also gleaned comparison to that of James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot. He's the modern day version of men that remain megastars long after the apex of their careers and even their lives have ended. So how has such a noteworthy man remained... well, so unnoticed? "Family is most important. I know some who have tried to make it [in the music business] and have lost the most important things in life: their wife and children." Paul's average weekend entails a Saturday spent selling records door to door and "meeting folks", then he travels home to spend the next few days with his family. "We go fishing in the mountains above our home or just take bike rides... when I'm home, I'm home and that is it." Larson's priorities may be in order, but it's meant skipping out on the full time toils that most musicians endure in order to support themselves with their music. Though he's definitely traveled long distances to get his songs heard - about one thousand miles on foot - this musician refuses to sell his soul in order to chase a career. "Staying close to my wife and children has helped me to avoid many pitfalls out there, whether they be drugs or other women. Part of being able to avoid things comes because of the solitary way by which I go about trying to make it in this." He's traveled from the southernmost part of Utah, north to Ogden, and everywhere in between spanning a distance of 400-plus miles in order to knock on the doors of strangers. Such a plight could put any experienced salesman to shame. "I've been laughed at, or even worse, felt sorry for. But there was always a person who enjoyed the music and gave me fuel to go on to the next door." The college educated father of three recently decided to campaign for his 'fifteen minutes' by enlisting the help of one hundred people. "It's been the reaction of people at the door that has made me decide to approach Oprah. I'm asking one hundred people or more to email her on my behalf and tell her my story and see if she could have me on the show." His reasoning? Larson's dream is not to become excessively wealthy, as evidenced by his door-to-door technique. However, he does have a desire to have his music, which really does seem to rival most albums on the charts today, heard - and do so without sacrificing his family. "I've seen too many casualties of the music business. Having said that, there is still something driving me... My dream is to be given the single chance to be heard by the nation only once. I think Oprah could do this through her show and I feel that if enough people were to email her producers about what I'm doing, it would turn heads in my favor... I can't reach them all by door to door!" Thus far, he's gathered twenty-five confirmed supporters in a matter of days, and the story continues to garner interest. "I believe there has been no other person in history that has walked as far as I have to sell and promote his own music!" To add to Paul's '100 List' or to listen to sample tracks, go to www.paulelarson.com. While there, you can learn a bit more about Paul Larson, view a photo album, read some of Paul's poetry, and view his abstract art. CDs are also available for purchase. Concert dates are listed as well. You're most likely to catch a concert during ski season in Park City, though Larson accepts invitations for private concerts. He also plays free at the nursing homes when he can. Most performances are solo. "When I've played with a band, there were times of great joy and excitement. When the day is done though, it's just me and my guitar and that is how I mostly perform for people." ________________________________________________________ "The Standard / 526 E.
