A Review of the John Denver Tribute Show by James Garrett in Branson, MO at the IMAX Little Opry Theatre ========================================================== by Emily M. Parris The IMAX Little Opry Theatre in Branson, MO is the cutest theatre you'll ever see. It has only 210 seats and it's perfect for the lively sounds of John Denver's music as interpreted by James Garrett. It's a very intimate setting. Every seat has a perfect view, with the very best seats starting on the second row. As James said on stage... "It's the only venue I've played where I can carry on a conversation from the stage with someone in the back row." The small stage has a backdrop of a colorful barn scene with doors opening out to show a country road. This adds a country feeling to the tiny theatre. It's a perfect setting in which to hear John Denver's music. James Garrett sings all the classic John Denver songs with warmth and charisma. You can tell that he really connects with the message in John's music. The show is very professional with a score of talented musicians there to back him up. Rick Quincey plays the hammered dulcimer. He was a member of the "John Denver Lives" show that formerly played at another theatre in Branson, Missouri. Randy Rudd is also a member of the "Sons of the Pioneers." The show also features Randy Plummer. Lori Locke and C.J. Newsom add their voices to the rousing and entertaining show. The songs were intermixed with humor and James' stories about his experiences with John Denver, the man, as well as his appreciation of the legacy John Denver has left to the world. It is very moving and entertaining - a show that no John Denver fan should miss. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Branson, MO - Monday through Saturday 10:00am "A Tribute to John Denver & Country Music Legends" James Garrett sings John Denver's best-loved hits. Called "Shooting Stars," the book also includes the lyrics to four original songs that will be available soon on CD thanks to Canadian musician Sean McCool. The book is an absorbing tale that begins with the death of a singer/songwriter who was most popular in the 1970s. A reporter covering the story stumbles upon a link one of his lesser known songs shares with several other artworks created in diverse mediums over the course of the 20th Century by geographically distant artists. As the reporter attempts to identify each artist's inspiration, she finds herself on a surprising journey punctuated by breathtaking coincidences, vivid dreams, and mystical encounters. Laurie was moved to write the first draft of the manuscript shortly after John's death, but just in the past year decided to pull the story out of its hiding place and bring it to life. Sean volunteered to compose music for three of the songs in the book, and he spent countless hours arranging and recording those pieces plus a fourth song contributed by Laurie's son, Jesse. The book and CD are both delightfully entertaining and carry important messages about the environment and humanitarianism. What is perhaps most striking, however, is that they embody such a deeply respectful and loving tribute to John. Certain passages are guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of anyone who loved him and the book is, in fact, tenderly dedicated to him. To read more about the book and the CD, go to http://www.shootingstarsthebook.com A link to the publisher, Xlibris, is available for book orders. Inquiries about the cd can be submitted to shootingstarsbook@sbcglobal.net A portion of the proceeds from every book sale will go toward critical environmental causes in Laurie's home state. ------------------------------------------- Barry Manilow Shines in First Ever Box Set, "Barry Manilow: The First TV Specials" ------------------------------------------- A Boxed Set of Barry Manilow TV Specials is being released in November. He was an environmentalist, humanitarian, activist for peace and food security. He was an inspiration for a generation, calling us to be more, care more, be involved more. He continues to be an inspiration, as his music still speaks to the need for nature and humanity to cooperate, calls to us to find the courage to embrace peace and the wisdom to think of tomorrow's children. Hank Bruce worked with fifteen of John Denver's songs, songs that spoke to him and inspired this collection of short stories. These are fictional essays inspired by the words and music of John Denver's creative and compassionate nature. These aren't the stories behind the songs; they are messages inspired by the music. They also explore the human spirit with 15 very different journeys. Most of these are positive in nature, and each is a gift, as were the songs John Denver gave us. "Listen to the Children" is inspired by John's song "I Want To Live." A grandfather called "The Dreamer," and his granddaughter build an AIDS Orphanage in Kenya where they are visited by a lady with the gift of hope. "A Bucket of Homegrown Tomatoes" shows the human side of an elderly Alzheimer's patient as she shares a story from her childhood. "Whose Garden Was This?" is an environmental statement inspired by the song of the same name, written by Tom Paxton. It poses some valid questions for all of us as we confront the issues of global warming, pollution, survival, our place in the overall scheme of things, and the only real gift we have to give to our children. "A Peace Beyond All Fear" was inspired by "Falling Leaves", a song John wrote about refugees. Hank takes us to Darfur and a small medical team working with the victims of this desert conflict, but we also look over the shoulder of a homeless Viet Nam veteran as his dream becomes a reality in Pittsburgh's inner city. The gift of peace is one each of us can both give and receive. "Coming Home" was inspired by the song "Whispering Jesse." This is a story of cowardice, courage, old flames and the gift of senior love. "On the Wings of an Eagle" - In this story the reader walks with an alcoholic Native American as a wounded eagle guides his healing. The eagle and the man give the gift of healing to each other. The book is a fundraiser for "Hunger Grow Away" http://www.hungergrowaway.com Petals & Pages Press / 860 Polaris Blvd SE / Rio Rancho, NM 87124 (505) 891-1355 * petals_pages@msn.com =========================================================== ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= On a recent tv show called "Don't Forget the Lyrics", a John Denver song was featured.
