Connie Martin asked about the Windstar Checks that used to be available. Ron confirmed that they are not now available, but said that there were other Windstar items for sale at http://www.wstar.org There was quite a bit of discussion about the Windstar Connection groups. Sherry Cook asked... "I and my other friends in the Group are wondering what our responsibilities will be as a Connection group. How many events should we schedule in a year and what kind?" Ron answered..."The Board is in the process of setting up a list of activities we hope the connections will choose from as well as adding activities that are more on each connections local level. There are so many unique activities that may need attention in your local area that don't apply to other parts of the globe. You can do something as simple as adopting a highway for cleanup or a beach as you may be nearer than most. You can schedule as many events as your group chooses and can support. As we are in a re-birth process we are constantly looking to expand the actions and activities of the foundation as we can afford to." Another question asked was whether or not John's children are involved in Windstar? Ron reported that Jesse Bell attended the Kidsweek at Windstar, and that Zak and Anna Kate are kept apprised of the progress at Windstar, but aren't personally involved. One of the highlights of the chat was when Liz asked Ron whether he had any special memories to share. Ron answered the question in detail: "Some of my fondest memories revolve around the Xmas holiday season. My family would join John's in Aspen and a great deal of fun was had by all. When we first had the hot tub put in we were taking a tub with the temperature about 10 degrees above zero and a few feet of snow all around. We had been skiing all day and were pretty beat and started talking about what the Swiss folks do from the tub. I told JD we should try it but he wasn't convinced until I got out and jumped into a bank of snow rubbing it all over my naked body. Well, it is real cold for a second, then all the pores in your body close and you're not cold at all. I stood there for a bit, and John jumped in the bank and tried it. Then as we both started to feel the cold we got back in the hot tub. Every nerve ending in your body starts to tingle with the heat. We sat there till we were so hot we had to get out, then did it again, (jumped in the snow, that is). Then we almost didn't make it to the house as we were so weak for the act. We knew then why the Swiss did this, it relaxed you like you were on drugs or something. From then on we always ended the day with the hot tub and the snow. In summer we would do a cold plunge in the pool or under the water fall. I'll always miss our time together." Ron talked briefly about his own family when he was prompted by a question: "I have a wife and 5 kids and am just a semi-normal guy depending on who you talk to" he said. Ron also commented on the Events of 9-11: "I think if John were with us in person today he would be just as mindful of the need to make peace our vision as always. The events of the 11th of September should make us all aware of the real need to understand each other better. How far those folks have gone to hurt us is coming from a lack of understanding, I feel. We are all the same, once you take away politics and religion, every one of us wants the same things for each of our loved ones and everyone else. A lack of willingness to understand where everyone is coming from and why is, I feel, the biggest reason for difficulty among the human race. Neither John or anyone else could have prevented what happened, I don't believe. This is truly a wake-up call for the people on the planet. And I think we will through this newfound unity be better and learn more from it. This will give us an opportunity to make great strides in the near future which would not have been possible before. My hope is for all the same things we all want... A peaceful and sustainable future for our planet and all who will eventually live and grow here on it." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Amendments to City's Charter Pass" Aspen Times, November 7, 2001 - Aspen Times Staff "Three amendments to the city charter, including one creating "specially designated spaces" within the community, won endorsement Tuesday from Aspen voters. The John Denver Sanctuary and the Ute Cemetery will both be protected as specially designated spaces, with voter approval of Referendum 2A by a 745-to-254 vote. The ballot question added a section on specially designated spaces to the charter and offered its protections to the two city properties. Any change in the passive uses that the two sites enjoy will require a unanimous vote of the City Council now that they have been given the designation." - - - - - - - - - - - - - Editor's Note: This is good for the John Denver Sanctuary since in other years there were questions about whether to use the park for other purposes. He visited my college and spent a week in our coffee house doing two shows a night. My college roommate worked in the coffee house so used to drag us down to see the shows (usually just so that there would be someone in the audience!) There were maybe 15 people there that first night and by the end of the week you couldn't get in the place. He didn't have an album out at that time (other than Mitchell Trio ones) and got his RCA contract during that week. He was so excited when he told us about it. I went to most of the shows and the local record shop had a long list of names waiting for his first album when it was released the following fall. Don't remember the first song, but some that he sang were "For Baby, For Bobbi", "Jet Plane", "Follow Me", "Catch Another Butterfly", "Today Is The First Day", etc. He returned the following year and again two years later for large concerts, one time with Mary Travers. Great memories! Gail Denisoff <<<<< o o o >>>>> In October 1971, alone and thousands of miles from home (I was in the U.S. Air Force in Osan, Korea), I walked through the streets of this foreign land homesick and miserable... then wafting down this busy street where everything one might want to buy was for sale, I heard an old, familiar sound - the sound of a friend from home...it was John Denver singing "Take Me Home, Country Roads"...how ironic...after that I felt a lot more at ease and listening to his music is one of the ways I got through that period of time. It's a really good show that goes back to the Uncle Remus version of "Brer' Bear and the Country" and that's where John comes in. The finale of the show is where all of the bears and other characters sing one of John's songs - slightly modified - "Thank God, I'm A Country BEAR." And they do a good job on it too. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ====================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== "MENTOR: JOHN DENVER" by Mary Bottinelli Looking back, I guess I felt you coming. My discontent had surely rendered something! You came to lead me onward to the light. Seeing, now, the kind of doubt you live with, Trying hard not to fathom the abyss I struggle {like as Jacob!} through the night. The aberration of my spirit haunts me, the sight of souls on trial, I can't ignore. I try to mitigate the circumstances and find some reason to what went before. Questions burn within my mind - no answers. The truth, as I have known it, causes pain. The doubt I see in you, is a reflection: I know, one day, you will be gone, again. ________________________________________________________ Copyright by Mary Bottinelli * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "REMEMBERING JOHN" by Madeline Rodgers The first time ever I heard his voice Come across the radio waves The melody stirred my spirit's rejoice As I listened to the message he gave His life was his music, he came here to teach Of earth, it's children and flowers and seas Of love and beauty for all to reach Out for the lesson that lies beneath His words filled my being, his spirit my soul As we soared to the boundless blue heights Of the skies like an eagle watching wheatfields of gold Singing songs of solution and right And so he inspired me and taught me things To care about more than before His voice like crystal with words on wings Ringing love, Ringing love evermore And now he flies in the sky with the eagles and hawks His body as free as his spirit Free to come and to go, with the creatures he walks And his voice still remains, we still hear it _____________________________________________________ Copyright by Madeline Rodgers ================================================= JOHN DENVER W A N T A D S / F O R S A L E ================================================= To purchase any John Denver songbooks, folios or publishing material you can email Cherry Lane Music at print@cherrylane.com http://www.cherrylane.com Windstar Productions / PO Box 5106 / Westport, CT 06881 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Erin Morris Pete Huttlinger has a new Christmas CD out called REJOICE.
