In addition to replenishing cities and forests, Plant-It 2020 also periodically provides educational workshops on forestry issues to thousands of children. Founded by the late Singer John Denver in 1992, our reforestation projects in many countries often directly help humanity by increasing crop production, fresh water availability and food." They are working on many Tree-Planting projects in Colorado such as ones in Las Animas, Carbondale, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs. One in Steamboat Springs, CO involves the sixth grade students from the Steamboat Springs Middle School and the Steamboat Springs community. There is also a Monarch Butterfly Preservation Project going on in Michoaca, Mexico. You can look up their tree planting projects by State, Country or year. The website also lists all the benefits of urban, forest, and riparian (riverside) trees. You can get involved in a tree planting project yourself by calling then at (303) 221-0077. Parris EBAY leads the way as a source for Rare John Denver items. It's easy (and free) to sign up and easy to bid. The cost of the auction is plainly listed in each item and the only other costs to be aware of are the cost of shipping/handling and/or insurance. The buyer almost always pays for this. Sometimes this isn't listed in the item and the only way to find out the amount is to write to the seller. I have been surprised with a high amount on occasion, so it is best to only bid on items where the shipping is plainly stated. Watch out for items with an unusually low initial bid price because the seller may have their costs covered in a very high s/h charge...such as a 1 cent auction with a $6.00 s/h fee. The seller is hoping that you'll get excited by the low price and not notice the price they charge for shipping. To begin on Ebay you just put "John Denver" (or anything else) in the search field and it will give you a list. The current bid amount is listed. You just put in the amount you want to bid. Then the next screen will ask you to confirm your amount. The auction lists all the ongoing action, and if you are the high winner when the auction closes, you contact the seller and pay by an online service, or a check or a money order to their address. The seller ships the item directly to you once you have paid and it's the "feedback forum" that keeps everyone honest. (Everyone rates the service they get or give and anyone who is not shipping and/or paying will be quickly shunned from the Ebay community). LP Albums and CD's were the most plentiful in John Denver listings, but there were 10 Magazines listed with articles on John. The nice thing about Ebay is that the seller's descriptions are often quite informative. In the case of the magazine articles, the items usually said the number of pages in the John Denver article and whether or not there were photos. The date of the magazine was also available in most cases, and you can often go to the library and photocopy the information if you know the date and the title of the Magazine. Here are a few of the listings for magazine articles: "Newsweek" Dec 20, 1976 - JD art pic on cover 6 page article on John "Fourteen" Magazine July 1979 Full page color pin-ups and photo packed stories on JD. "He's Finally on a High With Wife Annie" "WHO" weekly magazine - Oct 27, 1997 issue 6 page "Peaks & Valleys" story with 11 photos. "Flight Safety" Magazine - JD on the cover (Australia) This one didn't give a date but it was from 1997. There were 626 John Denver items listed on January 27, 2003. That number will vary as auctions end and new ones are added, but you can be sure there will always be a lot of items available. As with all Ebay auctions, there are sometimes auctions when no one else competes with you for an item and you get a really good deal. But if other people are competing for the item, the price might go higher than the price you want to spend and it's better to just let that item go. Here are some of the items that were available on Ebay when I did my research. There were 150 cd's, 20 dvd's, 50 videos (including many JD tv shows), 8 8-track tapes, 10 cassette tapes, 111 John Denver LP albums with 11 more that were autographed by John. An item I had never seen before was a video called "Mellow Memories" - a VHS tape with JD and others (1984) from USA Home Video. Another fun item was a VIP Pass to the Wildlife Concert. There were also 5 copies of John's biography "Take Me Home" starting at around $20.00. There were advertisements, autographs, documents, belt buckles, tote bags, photos and 75 JD sheet music books or songs. Also interesting were 2 other older John Denver books that are fairly rare. There was an industry trade ad, 4 T-shirts, 4 John Denver prints, a JD pillowcase, a John Denver dollar bill, and a Celebrity Ski Patch from the old John Denver Celebrity Ski Tournaments held a number of years ago. John Denver Chord Organ sheet music, switchplate covers, awards, magnets, guitar picks and a Static cling window decal were also available. Some interesting paper goods included 7 JD Concert Programs from various years, 7 concert ads/posters and one John Denver Event Program. The text of John's US Senate Testimony on March 26, 1986 was another item available. One really beautiful print was by Jim Coleman. It was called "Tribute to a Legend" under the pen name "Cherokee". Jim Coleman is a native of Glendale, AZ and has lived in Port Orchard, WA for over 10 years. You can see the print on his website at http://www.jimwcoleman.com One item I wish no one had dug up was "Rolling Drone - a 70's Parody Magazine" that had an article on John. But I sure liked the little 7 3/4" x 9 1/4" hardback book that features Elton John, John Denver, and Stevie Wonder. So there are definitely John Denver treasures to be found on EBAY! <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> ARCHIVING AMERICA'S MUSICAL HERITAGE ==================================== by Rebecca Donathan CNN ran a story about the Library of Congress program to archive America's musical heritage. While looking at the National Recording Preservation Board website to see which songs made the 2002 Registry, I realized it is for all genres of music that have been instrumental to the heritage of our country. The url below will take you to the site and the explanation of the Board's mission. From now until September 3, 2003, artists and their individual works can be nominated for inclusion on the registry. John Denver made a contribution not only to modern music, but to the entire 70's generation. Would anyone like to join me in nominating some of John's work? "Rocky Mountain High" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" come to mind as being good choices, but I am sure there are many more that would have a great justification for placement on the registry. As someone said, "John Denver was to the 70's what Elvis was to the 50's and the Beatles were to the 60's." John should be honored for that contribution. I thought this would be a wonderful way to honor John and his music for generations to come. This item is reprinted from the January issue of the NC Friends of John Denver Newsletter: "Denver Delights: From time to time, little things happen that remind you of John. They always make you smile ... I like to call them 'Denver Delights.'" by Laura Bolinger "Over the holiday season, there were a lot of special music programs at the nursing facility where I work. One evening, "The Music Man" was scheduled to play for the folks. He arrived around 5:30 and was to start playing at 6:30. After he got everything set up, he came over to talk to me for a couple of minutes. His name was Jesse. In our short conversation, he said 'Far Out' three times ... my first clue. "It was about 6:15 when he came into the nurses break area. Jesse asked if he could play me a song. Of course, I said 'yes'." "I've always wanted to be a cowboy" he said, "and this time of year, I like to play this song." I already knew what he was going to play. Then he said "I don't know if you like John Denver" ... That was all I heard, and my friend there started laughing ... "Why, she's only the president of the NC club! ... He proceeded to play "Christmas for Cowboys" and "Annie's Song."
