For more information: http://www.grammy.com * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Chicago Tribune 12/29/97 By Staci D. Kramer As word of comedian Chris Farley's death spread, thousands of people turned to the Internet for news, comfort and, in some cases, simply the chance to comment. Unlike talk radio, where a caller has to overcome busy signals and a call screener, anyone with an Internet account, a modem and something to say --good or bad -- about Farley could find a place to say it on-line. And, unlike with any other medium, they could, if they chose, find areas where they could interact with other people on their own time and at their own pace. Farley's death was the latest in a series of events -- among them Gianni Versace's killing, the tragic death of Princess Diana and the death of John Denver in a plane crash -- that have drawn attention to the drawing power of on-line communities, particularly in times of crisis or stress. Whether grievers already belong to some kind of virtual community that they visit regularly or are looking for an outlet that moment, for them the process of going on-line has become as instinctive as turning on the nightly news is for others. Adding to the attraction, especially in cases of celebrities, is that Web sites or newsgroups devoted to them or including them often already exist. And usually one or more of the major news sites will set up discussion areas that bring people together solely to discuss that person. The result is an Internet wake without a coffin but with tears, laughter and plenty of memory sharing. And just like any other wake, some people bring up the bad times or the not-so-funny things. In the hours after news broke that John Denver was feared missing in an Oct. 12 plane crash, his Internet-active fans quickly went online to compare notes and prepare for the worst. After his death was confirmed, places like the Rocky Mountain High Web site, run by fan club president Emily Parris, and the newsgroup alt.fan.john-denver gave them a way to be with people who understood and shared their grief. Now, nearly three months after the plane crash that claimed Denver's life, fans from around the world are still comforting each other online. They marked the two-month anniversary of his death together, helped each other through Christmas -- a holiday Denver marked with specials and concerts -- and made plans for a permanent memorial. Michele in Clearwater wanted to know if she was the only one having a "bad `missing John' day" and was quickly assured by Sue in Ohio that she was not alone. Not everyone is a regular. Some people wander in after hearing a Denver Christmas song or coming across a reminder that prompts a visit to one of the memorial guestbooks. Parris, 48, started a John Denver bulletin board service in 1992, then moved her operations completely onto the Web as more people gained Internet access. She also founded the John Denver newsgroup. Her John Denver community was well-established long before Denver's death. "John's death has brought the community together," says Parris. " I think that the (Internet) was really important because it's a meeting place. A lot of people were really upset and being able to share on the message boards was really important to them." She's heard from people who found comfort in reading the myriad messages. And she's heard from people grateful for a place to go, especially, she says, "people who say their family doesn't understand, that they shouldn't be this grief-stricken when they didn't know him personally.' Sharing grief online isn't new. After the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, many were drawn to a site that allowed the lighting of a virtual candle as well as providing a guest book to sign. But not everyone is looking for a place to mourn. Eighteen months ago, investment counselor Terry Ellsworth considered the Internet a joke and a waste of time. But when he reached his LaSalle Street apartment after a movie and heard a voice-mail message about Chris Farley's death, the first thing he did was dial in. His destination: a newsgroup called alt.obituaries, where the focus is all death all the time. The newsgroup was created as a gathering place for people who participate in "dead pools," where you bet that certain figures will die within a given year. But the unusual spate of high-profile deaths in the past few months and the higher numbers of users who may not understand the way newsgroups usually work has also made alt.obituaries a destination for people who want to react to death. Ellsworth was there, however, because he is part of the newsgroup's core community, and this was another celebrity death. The blending of people emotionally moved by a death and people with a heavy dose of cynicism isn't always smooth though. For instance, after John Denver died, people posted what Ellsworth describes as "overemotional" messages, including song lyrics, and were blasted by critics who labeled the singer a has-been. The Farley corollary was a thread about how he really wasn't that funny. But the community steps in when the dialogue turns nasty. "We immediately gang up on people who do that. We scare the hell out of them and they go away," says Ellsworth, who subscribes to several newsgroups for the sense of community they provide. Dozens of other conversations about Farley were being held on newsgroups, mail lists and forums around the Internet. Messages popped up in on-line newsgroups ranging from alt.tv.snl to a Green Bay Packers newsgroup to alt.true-crime. Among the less likely sites was rec.arts.poems, where three poems about Farley were posted that night. A Finnish poet identified only as "Antti" deftly captured Farley's life in a few brief verses ending with: "Thank you for the laughter but damn you for leaving us way too early. "He is so in my heart, he is here, he could never be gone." (John Denver) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SONG OF THE WIND: J.D. (Actually, it had been cancelled, but we didn't realize it at the time.) John appeared there a number of times and in June 1980, he placed his hands in cement at their Celebrity Plaza. There is also a star and his signature. Fans came from as far away as eastern Long Island, NY; southern New Jersey, Maryland and PA. The organizer, Sue, from Allentown, was ill and that's why it had been cancelled. It didn't matter because no one noticed we were there. We quickly adjourned to a nearby coffee shop to warm up, exchange stories and bittersweet memories of John, and exchange names and addresses and plan to gather again in Spring. The opportunity to place my frozen hands in John's hand prints was a balm to my broken heart. I never had the chance to meet him, so this was as close as it could ever get. I don't know why this was so comforting, but it warmed me so much. I was amazed at how small John's hands were. I'd always thought they looked small, but they were only a wee bit larger than my own, which aren't very big. The day was a typical John Denver day: brilliant sunshine warmed our shoulders, and the sunset in shades of lavender, mauve and peach reminded me of one of John's concert shirts. Last night (12-11-97) at his Cowboy Christmas Ball concert in Wichita, KS Murphey spent about 10 minutes talking about John. He stated that the news media had gone to a great deal of effort to make John into a person he was not. Michael pointed out that the media has never been very kind to John, and that if it had been a rock star killed they would have spent a lot more time reporting the death. He said he feels that as people look back to this century, that John will be found to be one of, if not the top singer songwriter of our time, not only because of his music but because of all the other things he did in such a short time. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - -- From: Mary Ledford I heard that the celebrity challenge at next year's Pebble Beach AT&T Golf Tournament will be named the John Denver Memorial Celebrity Challange. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: CRae Gift of Song for UNICEF 1997 I was watching the broadcast of Gift of Song, a benefit for UNICEF, held on 12/10. I was really touched by the book. It grabbed my heart! I've always been a quasi-John Denver fan -- I liked some of his music. But this book introduced me to the man, John Denver. I now see him through different eyes -- plus I see things through his eyes. I am now a COMMITTED John Denver fan! I always looked at the negative things in John's life, and rejected him. His divorces... his problems with alcohol. JOHN DENVER'S LEGACY not only opened my eyes to looking at John differently -- but life differently. Even my WIFE says she can see a change in me! She says I'm not as critical... judgmental... intolerant. She says she likes what she sees. Why didn't I see this while he was alive? You know what? If all of our models, mentors and "heros" had to be perfect-- we wouldn't have any except for Superman, Batman, Roger Rabbit and Mickey Mouse. Sure, John had problems. Don't we all? John shows us you don't have to live life perfectly to impact people in positive ways. Because of the insights I've gleaned about John over the past couple of weeks, I know MY life is going to make a difference now. Thanks, John. I wish I had been a little less blind while you were with us. I hope thousands of people will read it. I know it will make a BIG difference in their lives too. You lived what you sang about, your songs were truth, and you lived true to yourself. You were a rare thing in the world we live in today, someone who really cared about Grandmother Earth and those less fortunate. The mountains and seas of which he mused, Came alive to me, of course he never knew His music reached into my very soul And lifted me, moved me, touched me...oh the Joy! John, where are you now, I hope you've sailed Into the sky, found peace on vales And peaks of mountains high and clouds of white, You made the stars shine, now you've found the night. Tears flow, I taste the sorrow of never knowing how Much you truly meant until you'd vanished, endowing Eternity with your presence. You left a legacy Of love, peace, softness, and passion...of delicacy And strength. I never met you, though through your song, I feel we were friends. I wish you were still here...singing.
