The memory of one of Aspen's most famous stars may be honored with a memorial tree grove in town. The National Arbor Day Foundation has contributed $10,000 toward a memorial for singer John Denver, a champion of environmental issues who was killed in a California plane crash last year. Though city officials haven't given the proposal their blessing yet, members of the Arbor Day Foundation and World Family of John Denver are already planning a dedication ceremony at Rio Grande Park on Aug. 15. City Council members indicated Monday they would probably lend support to the project. Mayor Bennett said the naming of a tree grove, if not the entire park, for Denver seemed "very appropriate." =========================================== J O H N D E N V E R E V E N T S =========================================== July 4, 1998 - "A Celebration of John Denver" - a gathering for Windstar Members and Friends - Irvine, CA 6:00 PM $2.00 / For information: Cindydoe@aol.com July 4, 1998 - "A Stars & Stripes Salute to Independence Day with the "John Denver Celebration Overture" by Lee Holdridge - Irvine Meadows Ampitheater / Irvine, CA $13.00 July 8, 1998 - "John Denver Celebration Overture" with the Dallas Symphony / Dallas, TX July 25-26, 1998 Columbus, OH - Camp Mary Orton / PO Box 1815 / Westerville, OH 43086 July 26, 1998 - "Winds of Everest" narrated by John Denver on the Great Outdoors Channel 7:00 PM and 2:00 AM (TV) Aug 1, 1998 - Hearts In Harmony Celebration - Noon to 8:00 PM United Church of Christ - Doylestown, PA Carol (717) 548-2457 $7.00 or Dottie (honer@erols.com) Aug 2, 1998 - Hollis, NH - Noon to 6:00 PM $15.00 Barbeque, live music (603) 654-2124 Aug 14-16, 1998, Snowmass Village, CO "A Rocky Mtn High Celebration of Life" - For info Aug 14-16, 1998 Camp Shepherd / Mt. We are thrilled to tell you that we have received confirmation of the Event from the National Arbor Day Foundation, the Rocky Mountain Institute and the Parks Department of the City of Aspen. Even more awesome is the fact that John's family is as excited as we are, and have dedicated themselves to the creation of this living tribute! They have even volunteered to match the funds raised! The groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies will take place on August 15 from Noon until 5:00 PM. There are some incredible names being tossed around for the ceremonies.... we've been told that some of John's family members will attend, in addition to friends, celebrities, and local luminaries. http://members.xoom.com/AspenTrip/main.htm * * * <<< We Will Remember You, Think Of You, And Pray For You >>> by Donna Pinto of Westville, NJ On Saturday, July 27, the New York Windstar Connection held a special day of remembrance for John Denver on Pier 63 in New York City. The setting alone was worth the two hour bus ride Carol Blevins & I took to NYC. Pier 63 is basically an old barge, made up of "recycled" parts of old boats, along the Hudson River in New York City! The Statue of Liberty in the distance made me think back to spending the 4th of July in 1986 at the "live" concert for tv... :) The place cried out for "Calypso"! There were cruise ships floating by and the wind was really whipping around, playing havoc with the microphones... the rest room facilities were the "Frying Pan", a ship that sunk in the Chesapeake Bay that was salvaged. There was a grill for beef and veggie burgers, Snapple, cool stuff (for donations to the Make A Difference project, which will give 1/3 of the money to the Windstar Land Conservancy) like CDs by JD's old band members and tributes by other friends. Besides networking with other fans, the main attraction was the many talented musical fans and friends who gathered. The show opened with a dance interpretation of one of JD's songs by the Windstar Connection President's daughter. She was very lovely :) Pete & Kim Baker were the first musical performers. Pete is a real nice guy and does have a gift but songs like "The Eagle & The Hawk" are so difficult to sing. He also has to have a "cheat sheet" of the lyrics. His wife, Kim, did a lovely job with sign language interpretations of some of Pete's songs. Then came North Carolina's Kevin Yeargin, a good HIH friend. Frankly, I've never seen Kevin perform better! This is like the 4th show I saw Kev at and his self confidence and presentation just keep getting better and better :) "Sing With Me!" he demanded, and everyone did on tunes like "Darcy Farrow" and "For Bobbie" ;) Rusty Morgan performed old favorites like "Farewell Andromeda" with Pete Baker (down on his knees) holding up the words for him! Bobbie Johnson, for whom the song "For Baby, For Bobbie" was written, then spoke about her "first love" relationship with JD. Greg Short of the Short Brothers did a brief set, including the touching "Dear John". "Side By Side" did a marvelous set and won everyone over with their second song, a combination of "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (the Everly Brothers) and "Dreamland Express". Their highlight for me, however, was a stunning version of "Swans Against The Sun", the song JD did with Michael Martin Murphey. Then Max, formally from the Bronx Zoo, spoke about the organization of the "Wildlife Concert", his friendship with JD, and played a tape of what he called "JD's best song" (and I call the quintessential JD song) "The Wandering Soul (aka "Love Is The Answer"). The President of the Connection group took a poll and found out that 90% of those in attendance heard about the event on the internet. That was a surprise since both radio and newspapers publicized the happening. Thanks so much for the Connections hard work in making this happen. The first part of the program ended with every one of the performers onstage doing "Amazon -- Let This Be A Voice"! Let This Be A Voice for The Rivers was very appropriate as ships sailed by! Then it started to rain and Carol, Dottie Honer & I had to leave so we could catch the bus back to New Jersey. We left New York just as the "It's About Time" show started with Donna Lipman. I'm afraid they were delayed a bit by the rain (their keyboards were soaked). It was a truly magical afternoon and a wonderful way for the New York Windstar Connection group to remember a special friend. ============================================================ Tree Planting & Memorial Plaque for John in Australia Christine Egli Australian JD Fan Club ============================================================ As I haven't heard of any Memorials for John in Australia, I have decided that, as his devoted "fan club", we should create something very special for him ourselves and invite JD fans to take part. Enquiries have been made through "Landcare Australia" and they are very keen to get things moving very soon. At this stage we don't know how much money is needed for the trees and plaque but they advised us to begin accepting donations for this project right away. You had to be there by 11 o'clock at the latest and they would feed you and you had to be dressed in "country" attire. Needless to say we were headed out the road early that morning because this was something I WOULD NOT miss!! My husband and I got there in plenty of time, along with probably 600 folks or so. The entire movie team was so nice. They divided us into groups and explained what was going to happen and that it would be a l-o-n-g day. They fed us and just had us sit around for several hours. John arrived around 5 o'clock or so in a tank top and shorts with that strange hair-do he had for the movie. (Longer and slicked back) They brought us inside this building which had bleachers on the sides and chairs set up also. There was the stage up front and movie equipment all around. They talked to us more and then John came out and explained more about the filming they had been doing and the recording, of which he had been up til after midnight the night before finishing up, and that this was the end of everything tonight and he would be going home to Aspen. Well, for the next 6 hours we filmed. A little from this angle and a little from that angle. Moving the crowd from here to there because there weren't enough folks and all. Jessica came in for her shot coming down the aisle to her seat and Hume stood on the side watching over her and then they left. John joked around about his fancy (?) suit that he had to wear and how hot it was and how tired he was of wearing it. He also said it was very hard to sing in the "off key" way that they wanted him to in order to fit into this character. He also clogged (a mountain. dance from this area) and said it was hard to do with his missing toes but that it was working out ok. We all just roared that he got the hang of it!! In between filming he told us stories and even said how he was trying to write "The Foxfire Suite", but it just wasn't coming together. Not to worry he said, it would come to him and be on a future album, and he was true to his word and it was :-). (One of my favorites!) He told of his love for the area and it people and of the different businesses that had been so kind during their stay, catering to them and their long and or strange hours. After we finished up he walked around and talked to each and everyone of us that had stayed on ... what a thrill. It was late and we were tired, but knowing he was wiped out, but he stuck with us to the end. I will never, ever forget this wonderful time I had ... years and years later I can still close my eyes and it all comes back as plain and clear as can be!! Our hours of filming turned out to be that short concert scene, but what fun. Oh, about 2/3 of the way through the evening this lady was escorted in and John went over to her and gave her a BIG kiss ... turns out later he introduced Cassie to us!! Like I said, they were heading home to Aspen later that night. :-) Pat - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Benjamin Connelly --Hello to all. It's been a long time since I visited here. Self preservation I think. A little space between everything that reminded me of John. Having such a difficult time with the loss of this man. He was my" port in a storm" for a long, long time. Seems every important era in my life had a different John Denver theme song laced around it. He's been showing up in my dreams a lot since his passing. My conscious and subconscious mind are still a long way from over this. Some Musicians remind me of how much I loved to dance. Others of political corruption, human rights etc. So many Musicians have a theme or a style they center themselves around. Jimmy Buffet for example instantly puts most people in mind of the Florida Keys and the surrounding area. John has a theme also, every dern thing I see and hear when I step outside! How do you remove yourself long enough to recover from a loss like this when everything reminds you of that person. The forest, the sky, everything. I saw my six year old sitting in a tree the other day. My first thought was of how beautiful she is. My second was of John's autobiography. The part when he was a boy sitting in a tree. I have loved John for over three quarters of my life to date. I will never stop, nor do I want to. I would just like to think of him and listen to his voice without a broken heart. Benjamin Connelly - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Nancy Jurka Monument, Colorado Subject: A very unique and eloquent tribute to John Denver Hello to everyone,I would like to tell you of a unique experience that I had last weekend in Cheyenne Wyoming. Some of you may know that I am a Sweet Adeline; last weekend we had our annual Regional Competition in Cheyenne. 12 choruses competed with one another for the privilege of representing our region at International in 1999. Our chorus won third place and I felt we sang the performance of our lifetime! While the judges were tabulating their final scores..a very unique and unexpected musical performance was about to happen for the audience. Last year's winner the Hi Country Chorus from Denver Colorado took to the stage and the lights dimmed. As the chorus was separating in half on the risers, a huge screen came down in the middle of the stage..the lights were still dimmed..and the most gorgeous picture of an eagle in all its majesty took command on the screen. The director of the chorus went on the recite his piece about eagles..about living to one's fullest..and about a singer/songwriter that we lost. I knew instantly when I saw the eagle on that screen that it had to be something about John Denver..but I wasn't sure. When I heard those words "singer/songwriter" my instincts were right. Soft lighting cast a glow on the chorus as 5 tenors from the back of the risers sang in "one voice".."I am eagle I live in high country.." and the chorus joined in in beautiful barbershop style..the music of John Denver sung like I had never heard it sung before. I sat there with tear swelling up in my eyes..I was overcome with such incredible emotion..and the adrenaline from singing and competing also added to it as well. The Hi Country chorus went on to sing Rocky Mountain High, Country Roads, Sunshine on My Shoulders..and I think one other that I cannot recall right now. This music was sung to awesome slides of John Denver and the Colorado Rockies. After it was all over, many in the audience were in tears and a standing ovation with its thunderous applause filled that Civic Center. I was stunned..awed..and overcome with emotion. I have not been to a tribute at all, this was the first one. It was done in such eloquent taste to his legacy and his music..that I know of the pride of I felt of being a Sweet Adeline, of being a John Denver friend...of being a part of his family here on the newsgroup..and most of all as I have tried to instill in my students..and in my fellow chorus members.."to be all that we can be..not what we are.." So I wanted you all to know about this very unique and eloquent tribute to John..I hope all is well with everyone..and that sunshine is on all of your shoulders..Nancy ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= From: Emily John Denver's Post Office Box (P.O.
