About a week ago my newspaper had an article about the CMT Top 100 Country Songs list and John made the list. He is #18 with "Take me Home, Country Roads." Then over this past weekend, I was watching CMT do the countdown on tv. It showed some nice clips and had comments from other singers. The Weather Channel also made mention of JD and the song "Rocky Mountain High" during a recent weather forecast for the Colorado area. ..... Patricia in Florida - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cynthia Kandel June 27, 2003 Dear Emily, I wanted to share with you a small but sweet experience. Last night I couldn't sleep, so I turned on radio WLUS FM Gainesville, Florida and the first sound I heard was John Denver singing "Sunshine On My Shoulders." Then the DJ gave some history of the song and you could just tell he was fond of the man as well. He told another story about how in the 70's after John's "Rocky Mountain High" made it big that Baskin & Robbins was inspired by his song to create an ice cream called Rocky Mountain High. A nice interlude for me! Cynthia - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nancy Huffman June 7, 2003 It is nice to hear that so many youth are being introduced to John's music through dance. My own daughter has danced to John's pieces in several competitions and local performances. At her dance studio you can now hear the kids occasionally hum some of the tunes we all grew up with and came to love. My daughter loves ballet and pointe and of course for me just to watch her graceful movements combined with the beautiful music of John is very moving. I hope many more will do the same. ... It's a fund raiser for pediatric medical research and child health care. Since I'm an avid reader, I usually stock up on some great values. The used books are sorted into a number of different categories, including one on music. Being a huge John Denver fan, I always check for anything on John Denver, but I've never found much. However, this year I found a gold "nugget." To my surprise, I found the book called "John Denver - The Man and His Music" by Leonore Fleischer and it was in perfect condition. Needless to say, I immediately grabbed it without even looking at the price. And when I looked at the price, I had my second surprise - it was only 50 cents. The odd time, you can still pick up real bargains. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A Tribute to John Denver http://www.picturetrail.com/davesnouffer Great Tribute site with 167 online photos and JD Music!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Donna Quante Just to note places where John's music is heard...it is a long standing tradition at the seventh inning stretch of Baltimore Orioles home games to play "Thank God, I'm A Country Boy." John actually sang it live several times from atop the dugout...both at Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards. The last time was three weeks before his passing. At one time they tried to change the song, but the fans wouldn't allow it. Now it is played I'd say 90% of the time. Don't know if it's still there, but the Babe Ruth Museum had a John Denver exhibit with pictures of him at the ballparks and played the song. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ========================= P O E T R Y C O R N E R ========================= Tears of Joy and Happiness by Paul Gilbert As I journey to Aspen, I wondered in my mind Whether John would be there to greet me? Or whether he would be just a moment in time He would not be there I thought, nowhere in sight Lost forever in time, in the wonders of flight But as I sat in the sanctuary A place where he would have loved I looked up and saw an eagle, in the sky above I knew then that he was here with me In the trees, the mountains and the lakes A friend once more, to share the joy Of a man who gave so much As I sit here writing this poem A message to the world I came here with tears of joy and happiness For a man who saved many souls To live a life of freedom, to live a life of purpose To have so many goals Many tears have been shed Many new friends have been made But without this man, without his life I would have not been saved. As I go back to England A place so far away I reflect on this week A great joy in my mind To go home and feel at peace With John, right by my side. _________________________________________ 5 am. 15th October 2002 in Aspen Colorado * * * Missing You by Cynthia Gullage Johnny, we sure do miss you. Finally, a show that acknowledges that John was in tune with the people even if he wasn't "bowing" to the recording studio executives. He remained true to his music, his message and his commitment to making the world a better place even at the expense of his career and his marriage. Those of us who have always been touched by his life do well to remain as true to him as he was to his life's work. Hats off to CMT, Vince Gill and Lyle Lovett for recognizing his influence on country music. May his message of peace and love continue to inspire us all. ************************************************************* Rocky Mountain High: The John Denver Internet Fan Club emily@sky.net http://www.rockymtnhigh.org July 2003 * Issue #111 * Editor: Emily M.
