These trees are not only making a difference to the environment but are also drastically helping the lives of people. I want to share with you some of the many recent activities of The Plant-It 2000 Foundation and ask for your continued support in 'making-a-difference'. The John Denver Memorial Forest: The passing of singer John Denver has led to a drastic reforestation project throughout Rusinga Island, Lake Victoria, Kenya. The island has sadly been deforested in the past but the current reforestation project is already improving the island's natural resources. Our reforestation efforts are assisted by 10,000 - 15,000 local participants representing schools, farm groups, church groups, families and the local government. Increased reforestation at the John Denver Memorial Forest on Rusinga Island has tremendous benefits including a) increased fruit production, b) improved crop yields from soil improvement, c) decreased grazing pressure on the land, d) protected watersheds, e) generation of sustainably produced firewood and charcoal and f) the unification of differing ethnic groups via intra-island cooperative restoration efforts. John Denver Wildlife Sanctuary - Aspen, Colorado, USA: In August, 1998, The Plant-It 2000 Foundation partnered with the City of Aspen and the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor the passing of Singer John Denver by funding the first phase of a multi-acre wetlands area in Aspen. Over 200 people assisted with the planting of 125 native saplings along both sides of a river and throughout an island in the river. This is a multi-year project designed to not only reforest a riparian zone which will improve the health of the river but will also provide homes and food for indigenous wildlife. Tree-plantings will continue annually towards completing this important project. Plant-It 2000 has just completed changes on its website allowing contributors to make secure electronic contributions to Plant-It 2000 using a credit card. The URL of our electronic contribution page is at http://www.tesser.com/plantit/econ.htm and our main page on the internet remains at http://www.tesser.com/plantit Plant-It 2000 is having an address change due to changing U.S. Postal regulations. Oh my God, I was devastated! I went to work in disbelief, not thinking much about what I was doing that day. My mind drifted in and out. I raced home to watch any news I could find. I was walking around the next several weeks, a person without purpose, a broken heart and an empty soul. I listened to John's music, watched all his old tv specials and reflected on the scrapbook I had kept over the years. I pressed the new articles in between the pages, the ones I never dreamed I would have to read. I would go for long drives, listen to the music that had given me purpose for so many years, crying silently and alone. One night through the tears came the words for a poem about John's influence on my life over the years. I called it, "Through His Music," because it was through so many of his beautiful words I found out the true meaning of life. While it helped to get my feelings out on paper, there was something more I needed to do. I needed to go to the Rocky Mountains to try and bring closure to this awful tragedy. In June, 1998, I began the road trip across the country seeking to find answers to my questions. It took two days after leaving North Carolina to arrive in Denver. I had been on two other trips out west but it had been awhile so I was enjoying tracking across the different states again. I stopped briefly in Kansas City, Mo. to meet Emily Parris, the editor of the RMH Fan Club. It was good meeting her, visiting her office where all the JD info is turned out and learning about memorials and places I could visit with connections to John. After a long drive across the Kansas prairielands, there they were, the Rocky Mountains. They were just as beautiful as I remembered, especially with the lights of the city aglow against their high peaks. I got settled in for my stay and went the next morning to Faith Presbyterian Church, where one of John's memorial services was held. It was much smaller than it had looked on tv. I walked around the grounds, went inside the church and recalled the service that had aired on MSNBC. It was a sunny summer day, flowers landscaping the church sign, a cool Rocky Mountain breeze blowing and only thoughts of John to occupy my mind. That afternoon I drove through tunnels of mountains to Estes Park, one of the prettiest places in the Rockies. I spent the next several days driving, walking, and hiking around in John's beloved Rocky Mountains, taking in all of the sights. There was wildlife running free to see, snow to play in on the mountaintops, waterfalls to cool me and so much that reminded me of what life was like for John there. After a few days, I moved on to Colorado Springs where I was amazed by how different the landscape was compared to that in and around Denver. There was the Garden of the Gods to visit, a group of very beautiful red rock formations that looked like castles jutting straight up to the sky. One of the most beautiful places was Seven Falls, with one waterfall right after the other falling into the next, tumbling down a steep rocky cliffside. At the very bottom of the falls was a stage where Native Americans sang and danced to the music of the their heritage. Tears came to my eyes as I stood at the top of the falls listening to the gentle spririts that echoed out over the splashing water. I thought of John's deep affection for the Native American people, their land, and their influence on his thinking and sometimes his music. It became a moment etched in my memory forever. The last place I visited in Colorado Springs was Pikes Peak. At over 14,000 feet high, if views could talk, this one would speak volumes. A raging wind howled at the top of the mountain and a 32 degrees felt much colder. It was almost like looking over the land from a plane and seeing a map-like landscape below. I was not surprised to learn that Katherine Lee Bates who wrote, "America, The Beautiful," found her inspiration for the song atop this glorious peak in the Rockies. That afternoon I drove through Independence Pass on my way to Aspen, one of the most beautiful drives I've ever experienced. The long and winding road curved around the majestic snow-capped Rockies, each step leading me closer to John's home. With every river I passed by I wondered if John had fished there and I marveled at every mountain peak he might have crossed. The sun was dancing on the leaves of the aspen trees making them shine like diamonds and almost around every bend was a waterfall streaming down a mountainside from snow melt. It was like being in a dream, one I never wanted to awake from. As homes began to come into view I knew I was almost there....Aspen, the quaint little village-like town John had come to know and love as home. The first thing I did was find the Welcome Center so I could get my bearings around town. Interestingly, I met a lady there who was also a John Denver fan and more than willing to help me locate all the places of connection to him. First of all, I drove up to Starwood, the community where John had built his dream home in the 70's. I parked the car at the gate and spoke to the gatekeeper, who shared his fond memories of John. He even offered a map of Starwood and took my picture beside the sign. I scooped up a handful of gravel from the driveway for a souvenir, spent some time looking out over Aspen, the airport, the beautiful mountains and pondered on John's beginnings there. Next stop was the Aspen Airport. Just seeing the small planes parked there, some flying in and out made me think of John's love of flying. A lump came up in my throat as I walked inside the airport and looked around for John's wall memorial. It took a few minutes but there it was...a bust of John with engravings of a plane, mountains, and the words, "Rocky Mountain High." Below was a park bench with the words from another song, "Love Is The Only Dream I Know." I just stood there staring at the memorials to a life that should still be a part of the hustling and bustling that was going on all around me. It made me realize how quickly some people seem to forget and I vowed I never would. I left the airport in a haze of thoughts, almost mechanical in my movements as though the physical and mental were separated by miles. I drove back to town, walked up and down the streets wishing it had never happened. I was hoping I'd turn a corner and catch a glimpse of his face or see him laughing with friends at his favorite restaurant but my mind reminded my heart it couldn't happen. I drove onto Snowmass for dinner that evening choosing a place with a view of one of the ski mountains. I sat by the window looking up at the lift and letting my thoughts take me to a winter scene. I could see John in one of his colorful ski outfits, sunglasses, a great big smile (as only he could have) as he was gliding and weaving on the "downhill stuff." It made me smile, it made me think about how much John enjoyed life and how he lived most of his days to the fullest. I spent the next two weeks traveling beyond the memories of Colorado to the glorious national parks and canyons of Utah, celebrated my birthday in Las Vegas, viewed one of the world's seven natural wonders, The Grand Canyon, and awed in so much beauty across this great land until I was once again on my own mountainside in North Carolina. Had I found what I'd gone looking for? Maybe I'd had the answers all along. Was there such a mystery to life, it's coming and going? To this day and beyond, I don't believe I'll ever find closure to John Denver's death. How could I ever let go of something that helped mold me and make me into the person I am today? As far as I can see, it can't be done. There's a part of me that will always be empty from the loss but a bigger part of me willing to go forward carrying the torch, keeping the light burning and the spirit of John Denver alive. ___________________________________________ Written By: Debora Richey (copyright 1999) * * * "John Brought Us Together" by Lee Marcus Last July, while I was in Amsterdam, Holland, I got the lyrics to the Dutch version of "Perhaps Love" translated. I then posted a message on the John Denver chat sites offering to email the translation to anyone who wanted it. One of those requesting it was a man named Erwin Wigman, in Dieren, Holland. He and I began emailing each other often, and since I was studying Dutch, he would correct my mistakes and I would help him with his English (though his English is quite good). Along the way, he invited me to stay at his home when I next visited the Netherlands. Well, I just got back from the most fantastic vacation I've ever had. Not only was Erwin the ultimate host, he took time off work and drove me all over the country. Of course, we did John Denver things too: we went to hear John Adams (a "Dutch John Denver") in concert in Apeldoorn and met him afterwards backstage for a private concert and guitar lesson. On another day we went to meet Jerry Kooyman (another "Dutch John Denver") and Adriana de Jong (a John Denver fan who goes by the nickname"A3" -- that's Ah-drie in Dutch) in Jerry's hometown of Delft. We all had a great time as Jerry led us on a tour of his hometown, followed by a nice lunch together and a visit to a museum. On my last day we went to hear Jerry perform in concert in Rijswijk. I knew Jerry from when he performed here in the San Jose area last January, and he taught me some songs here in my home. This time he hosted Erwin and myself and cooked us a great Dutch dinner. We followed that by playing John Denver videos and practicing the guitar until it was time to leave. It is hard for me to believe that simply through a John Denver song I was able to enjoy such a great vacation. But John used to say that music brings the world together, and this it did. My sincerest thanks to Erwin, Jerry, A3 and John, and all the other John Denver fans in the Netherlands who showed me such a great time!-- Lee Marcus ============================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ============================== From: Paul Swanton After reading this month's newsletter, I thought I'd submit a song that I wrote back in late December last year. Natalie Yewshenko (from New Jersey) wanted to give the gift of a song to her friend, Val Cooper (from Michigan) on the anniversary of John Denver's birth. Natalie called me on the phone, told me what she wanted to do, and then asked me if I could help write the song. She dictated a few words and phrases over the phone, and I told her I'd "see what I could do with them." I sat down and thought about the words, and how much Val's friendship meant to her. Val and Natalie, like so many of us, met and became close friends after John died. I'm only sorry that it took his death to "bring us all together." We all realized that we're not alone in our feelings about John. We came to rely on each other for strength, for love, for friendship, for company... and this wonderful family has blossomed. Val's song, "Connecting Hearts" is an inspirational testimonial to the magic of John and his music...connecting our hearts to his, and then our hearts to others'... like one giant "family tree. "After learning of John's death, we were all in shock; and we grieved in our own ways. We were sad, sometimes "angry"... We wondered how such a tragedy could have happened to John.. There are things that happen in this life that we have no answers for.. But we all came together as a family, to share our sorrow and sadness, to trade memories, stories, to celebrate the life of one very special human being, etc... and found wonderful comfort in that. My Sister, My Friend by Paul Swanton & Natalie Yewshenko Seems like only yesterday When the news of his passing came; The gentle whisper of the wind fell silent on the sea. But lying in the shadow bare Was something more than magic there, Friends and Family waiting near for me. It's often told in times of grief That life lives on in everything; And so it is in dying, too, the spring of life reborn. But why it is, is often cast In mystery of the 'Spirit Past', The night dies, and brings new life in the morn. Sometimes I just felt so alone, afraid and often sad; Then he gave to me a special friend I never knew I had... My sister, my friend, my companion to the end; A gift you are to me; You bring out the best in me And help me soar to Heaven's lair No more alone, you're always there Together, we'll share his love forevermore. No more sorrow, no more pain, With you my heart sees more to gain To speak of all he means to us and then... To carry on his legacy Of hope for all mankind to see That we can grow our "one world fam'ly tree." Kindred spirit, let me be The kind of friend you are to me; The bond of love lives strong between our hearts. Take my hand, come fly upon The winds of love that blow beyond The place that tries to set us all apart. The eagle soared, the heavens roared, no more will I be sad, For he gave to me a special friend I never knew I had... My sister, my friend, my companion to the end; A gift you are to me; You bring out the best in me And help me soar to Heaven's lair No more alone, you're always there Together, we'll share his love forevermore. ---------------------------------------- Copyright 1999 by Paul Swanton and Natalie Yewshenko ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= Eve Paris and I were in some antique shops a few days ago and I found a book titled "The Children and the Flowers".
