She was a backup singer for John. "Connie, I wanted to send you a letter I wrote to the LA Times following the airing of the TV movie, supposedly of my brothers life. As a long time friend I feel I can trust you and Roger to send this along for me, without my e-mail address. I don't know if they will print it or not at the moment. You and I have spoken about the lack of truth and fact in this TV movie about my brother, and I don't want our friends (John's fans) to be mislead in the portrayal of my brother's life. Those who knew him through his many concerts, TV specials, and music, saw more (of) the truth of John than what was portrayed in the movie. For him to be portrayed as some kind of dweeb, not the caring, intelligent, outspoken, humanitarian, and environmentalist he was, disgusts me beyond belief. I have been reading the message board on the JD net site since the movie and this is why I am enclosing this letter for you to pass on. My brother was a wonderful human being, and the folks who I have been reading messages from know this. But I don't want them to be mislead by this portrayal of his life, or the events shown in the movie. I am not ready to open myself up to our friends yet with my e-mail address, as many things are still too painful for discussion. I was only able to force myself to watch the movie for my Mom as she was so upset about it. Maybe one day soon I will be able to communicate through this medium. I feel like writing the real story now myself more than ever before, or doing the real movie. Anyway, if you would be so kind as to put this out there for our friends I would appreciate it. Thanks..... Ron (Deutschendorf) Attn: Lee Margulies, Los Angeles Times In watching the CBS television movie, "Take Me Home, the John Denver Story" which aired Sunday night last week, I must say I am tremendously disappointed. This was not an accurate portrayal of my brothers life, nor are the events and people included an honest depiction. The people responsible for this, chose to incorrectly portray John Denver's life for reasons I cannot imagine, (personal gain?) not to relay the truth of my brothers life! I know this is not the fault of CBS, none the less, I would have preferred an honest portrayal of my brothers life, the good and the bad! Our dad, though indeed hard on us, always supported John in his dream. Dad and Mom were the ones who let John quit college, and go to LA, where they imposed on friends, for a job and a place to stay for John while he attempted to get his start. Our father never gave my brother a hard time about the name change, though he had every right to do so, and the phrase "Howdy Doody is famous" was never spoken. The relationship between our father and my brother was great, and though they had difficulties when John was younger, (what children don't most of the time) those had long since been forgotten before Johns first TV Special, not just before our dad passed away as shown in the movie. Our father was very quick to relay how "proud" he was of my brother and his accomplishments throughout John's career, as well as his love for his son! Nor did John write "Annie's Song" just before he and Annie divorced, as we are lead to believe in the movie, for the purpose of attempted reconciliation, but many years prior to their difficulties. Ask Jerry Weintraub about Hal Thau's involvement in John's career, versus bookkeeping! Hal owes all that he has to my brother! For him to say in the Memorial Service he felt like John was the brother he never had sure makes me wonder, "How is our mom doing Hal?" As there was supposedly no will, do you think she is being taken care of as John would have wanted? The only good to come from this "TV Movie" is a certain exposure of my brother's music, in prime time!" Ronald L. Deutschendorf John Denver's only brother ==================================================== RHYMES & REASONS...and...IT'S ABOUT TIME... to Merge From the "It's About Time" Newsletter: ==================================================== Dear Friends, Ann Schnitz and I are proud to announce the merger of our two organizations: "It's About Time" and "Rhymes and Reasons." I started "Rhymes and Reasons" 10 years ago while sitting at the Earth Day concert in April of 1990 in Washington, D.C. As you know, John performed during that event and it was a wonderful day. I chose the name for its environmental message and have always been a "hands on" organization vowing now to continue John's important humanitarian/environmental work in his memory. I'm currently working on putting together a photo book of John which will chronicle his career with a major focus on his environmental/humanitarian work. I am very pleased to be announcing this merger. ....Mary Ledford ============================================== "Let This Be A Voice" Event 10/16/00 Canceled ============================================== From: Mary Ledford I know we were going to wait until June 1, but it has become increasingly obvious that we will not obtain the necessary attendees needed to keep this event alive. Therefore, Pam and I regret to inform you that the "Let This Be A Voice" luncheon and concert scheduled for October 16 at the Aspen Meadows has been officially CANCELED in its entirety. We are both extremely disappointed in this decision, but it was the only decision we could make. The numbers just didn't materialize and there can be no event without sufficient funds and attendees. Unfortunately, we have lost all of the initial deposit of $500 made to the Aspen Meadows. All money will be returned promptly. If you have any questions about refunds, please e-mail Pam directly (pamela.beasley@airmail.net). We will, however, be holding an auction at the Mountain Chalet ballroom on Saturday, October 14 from 11AM-2PM. Mack Bailey has graciously agreed to come and do some impromptu singing for us. If anyone has anything they would like to donate to the auction, please let us know. We will try to secure t-shirts and we will have the little JD bears for sale. Again, Pam and I both regret the cancellation of the event but we have no other choice. We thank all of you for your support and hope we'll see you at the auction. May 25, 2000 ============================================== J O H N D E N V E R S T O R I E S ============================================== Karen Mogel ....fan interviewed on PowerTalk Radio I got through to talk to Hal Thau on PowerTalk Radio on April 28, 2000. To my surprise, it rang on my first try. They asked me my name and where I was calling from, and about 5 minutes later, I was able to speak with Mr. Thau. I was a little nervous at first, but was happy to get through. Mr. Thau was very easy to talk to, it didn't take but a minute for my shaky voice to go away. He listened to my story of how I had a chance to meet JD. When I was 9, I found a tape of "Windsong." I had a rough childhood and his music took me to places I couldn't otherwise go to. I dreamed of meeting John, and wanted to thank him for pursuing his dream and let him know what his music had meant to me. I've had 3 opportunities in my lifetime to see JD in concert. The third was in Valley Forge, PA in August of 1994. My son was 5 months old at the time. We weren't going to take him because it was later in the evening but at the last minute decided he would go (our chances for having children wasn't real great and to have our son was a blessing). The lights were dimmed and the music started softly and then my son started to cry. I ended up missing the first half of the concert and my husband missed the second half. Out in the hallway, we really couldn't hear the music, and one of the guys who helped with stage set up kept coming by every so often and towards the end of the show he gave us backstage passes. It's "funny" how most of my life I wanted to meet JD, and then because of my son, who we didn't think would ever exist, we met him. We also now have a little girl who is now 4. When JD came up to me he said "and who is this?" and he just took my son from my arms and held him, and gave him a kiss on the cheek. I will cherish those pictures always. Mr. Thau spoke gently and was very kind, and I am grateful to have gotten through to him. My last words to Mr. Thau were "it is a tragedy that we lost John Denver, but the world is truly a better place because he lived." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BUMPER STICKER: Diane Bozarth I have had a JD bumper sticker on my car since shortly after John's death, and today, for the very first time, someone came up to me and wanted to talk about John! This fellow told me that the movie reminded him how much he had always loved John Denver's music and how much he had missed listening to it! This movie was well worth it, if for no other reason than to just bring back the old fans, and bring in some new ones. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From the RMH Guestbook: "I just finished watching the John Denver movie. I am a foreigner and I have known little about John Denver compared to all the people who write in this web site. But I could not resist myself knowing more about him at this hour and the search in my PC brought me here. I did read some views, which says his life has not been portrayed that well, but I would like to say that it added one more to his millions of fans. I love his music...words just can't express them. Peace for his family and thanks for the wonderful music you have left for the entire world." Afan....Sunday 4/30/2000 ========================================= J O H N D E N V E R R E V I E W S ========================================= Dennis Ducey I want to share with you the excitement and joy that was mine as I watched and listened to Charlie Zahm at the Celtic Festival in Monterey, California. When John died it felt that a part of me died with him and left a voice within me filled with sorrow that did not diminish with time. I had come to accept as fact that no one could ever fill that void, that no one would ever write and sing songs that would fill my eyes with tears and my heart with joy. It was with great joy that I tell you I was wrong. Charlie's performance both filled my eyes with tears of joy and filled my heart with laughter. I know that my love for John went far beyond my love of his music and that I will still catch myself wondering when John's next concert will be. Now, part of that void has been filled for I will be looking forward to the next time I can see Charlie perform, and I have his wonderful cd's to listen to until next time. I know that nothing can capture the magic of seeing Charlie perform live, his personal magnetism and rapport with the audience that can carry you away to a different time and a different place as he sings songs of the land and songs of the sea. Words cannot express the beauty or power of Charlie's voice nor can they capture the magic of his songs. ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R P O E T R Y ======================================= He Still Sings.... by JoAnne Wolford On wings of Eagles, flying flying free.
