I can't believe how quickly it went. My head is still spinning. The Chalet that we rented was the perfect place for it - nestled in the woods with a great deck on one side. Out of the 12 people that were there we had 6 guitars and had a sing-a-long around a fire. A guy came from Newport News, VA; 3 folks from Pittsburgh; one from New York State; one from Maryland, with most of us from Pennsylvania. Ed Stowers from Virginia was incredible on his 12-string guitar, and although everyone was good, we all gradually put our guitars away to listen to him exclusively. Every John Denver song we requested from him was happily accommodated, and he had 11 people to back him up with harmony! (We sounded great, if I do say so myself!) :-) It was a wonderful evening around the fire - one which made an indelible memory which will stay with me forever. I know John was smiling down upon us hearing his music being sung to the heavens. We had a silent auction and raised over $150.00 for several of John's charities. Doesn't sound like much, really, but not bad at all for 12 people. We watched John Denver videos and just in general had a great time being able to talk about John and the impact he made in our lives. We still miss him greatly, but - WE CELEBRATE HIS LIFE! * * * =========================================== NEW ZEALAND - John Denver for Mother's Day =========================================== by Susan Leaver Foundation member Reverend Graeme was going to be away for the Mother's Day service, so he asked member Samuel Hartman (former director of the Successful Living Institute of South Africa) to deliver the address, and Susan Leaver, co-ordinator of the International John Denver Memorial Foundation to organize the music. Samuel's theme was "teach only love as that is what you are" based on the material of the Attitudinal Healing Centre of Tiburon, California. Our music for the service was "The Flower That Shattered the Stone", "Heart to Heart" and "Annie's Song." We had a beautiful time. ========================== * * * CD Reviews * * * ========================== CD REVIEW: Derek Scott Aramburu's "One More Day In Maine," review by Carol Sullivan The first thing that hits you as you listen to handsome baseball player-turned-singer Derek Scott Aramburu's new CD "One More Day In Maine," is his clever lyrics. His unusual rhymes, like crest with Octoberfest, and my personal favorite, "just like that" and "coup d'etat" - make me chuckle each time I hear them. Sophisticated writing, combined with a pleasing baritone, make the driving rhythms of his upbeat songs as well as his thoughtful ballads an enjoyable listening experience. Dedicated to the memory of John Denver, it is clear that songs from Derek's CD such as "Cool Fall Days," "Six Strings Long" with the words of "it's a happy, happy song," and the title track, "One More Day In Maine" come from the Deutschendorf sphere of influence. Derek is that one in a million man who can write and sing "a happy, happy song" and sound macho while doing it! "The Nature of the Game" combines influences of John Denver intertwined with a Bob Dylan-type sung monologue. Derek's decision to add a country style drum track to the song, "The Bluesman" was pure brilliance. "The Bluesman" - sure to be a big hit, gives lead electric guitarist Carl Adam a chance to shine. "Way Back When" features a Machito Sanchez style of percussion while the lyrics and chord changes are thoughtful expressions of a sad but present optimism. Only one song is about love; "You and Me." Not just about love, but about love, rainfall and sunshine, loneliness, and coming home to a better place. Beautiful memories abound on "One More Day In Maine." Listen to Derek Scott Aramburu's CD and let it take you home. For more information on the cd, go to: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/238/derek_scott_aramburu.html or write to Derek at daramburu@houston.rr.com <<<<< ooo >>>>> CREATE A GARDEN FOR JOHN by Barbra McIntosh I suggest that all home gardeners could create their own memorial to John by planting something special in their own gardens. It helps my grief to create something special for him and in his memory. I love Columbines and later discovered that they were the Colorado State Flower. However, I intend to plant something special in my garden in John's memory. John loved nature. A personal planting in your own garden would, I think, be a wonderful tribute to John and would perhaps ease the grief that everyone feels. "Too dearly loved to be forgotten" Best wishes, Barb ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= Site that gives the events in Aspen for October, 2001 http://www.john-denver.org/events/aspen2001/index2.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mary Again Pam and I invite you to join us at the 4th annual celebration of the life and music of John Denver. Quickly I found the story, back on page 40. I read the headline, "Summer Side Up," but then my eyes dropped to the subhead in the middle column, just above a picture of a mountain biker with the peaks in the background, "Come Dance With the West Wind." Tears sprung to my eyes. I started reading the article, turned the page and saw another subhead, "Touch on the Mountaintops." At one point, the author (Tamra Willett-Johnson) writes, "Sitting atop a gentle mare as the breeze brings whispers of alpine meadows and the sun carries the heat of eagles' wings is a true Rocky Mountain High." Methinks Tamra must be a fan :-) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John Denver Fans in New England please note: New Hampshire Friends of John Denver - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rochelle I was visiting with my Dad this weekend. I was working in one part of his garden and he was working in another while listening to his portable radio. My Dad called me over to hear something he thought was funny on his call-in gardening show. He told me, "Hey, you just have to hear this! Every time someone calls in and asks about tomatoes, listen to this song they play!" On the radio, they were just finishing with a caller, and then came the unmistakable tones of dear John singing Homegrown Tomatoes! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ====================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== "John Denver" by Pamela Manley He had a fondness for trees and Rocky mountain tops A spirit of a race horse That would run and never stop He is forever with us In the little things we do Sunsets and mountain streams These keep John's memory new He spoke from his heart Lived what he believed Sailed the winds of his songs Some of his dreams achieved But it wasn't finished It just wasn't done He hadn't ridden off Into the setting sun If I had one thing I could say to John right now I'd say respectfully and honestly "Thank you Sir take a bow" Thanks for caring and believing Thanks for loving life to the max Feeding hungry children and Carrying a heavy pack For me the mountains will be brighter The sky bluer than blue For John opened my eyes To the world fresh and new! _____________________________________________ c 2001 Pamela Manley "You Are Still With Us" by Karen Connell Onward higher, gliding, ever so peacefully, you have gone. Your life here on earth has come to an end. Your dreams for tomorrow are now only a whisper in the wind. We are left with a scrapbook of memories of you in our minds. But we will know as we watch a morning sunrise, Unfold before our eyes...you are with us. Or, now as Spring begins to paint the fields and hills With its' array of colors...we will think of you. And as we stand in that field of flowers, glorifying the Beauty surrounding us, and a gentle breeze Lightly caresses our cheek... We will know that you are still here with us. So look down upon us now and smile, As your journey comes to an end. You are now home..., rejoice, as you reach out and gently take God's hand. __________________________________________________ c 2001 by Karen Connell "Remembering John Denver - WISHES" by Cynthia Helen Gullage Let him wander country roads that lead back home again, To spend an evening round the fire with family and friends.
