Past theater seasons have seen entertainments based on the songs of Elvis Presley, Louis Jordan, Frank Sinatra and a host of others. As befits the subject of the revue, "Almost Heaven: Songs of John Denver" takes a modest approach - a bit of biography and a great many good songs. Denver, a songwriter and singer from the early 1960s who died in an airplane crash in 1997, crossed the borders of folk, pop, country and even soft rock with notable success. His best-known songs include "Rocky Mountain High," "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Annie's Song." "Almost Heaven," crafted by Harold Thau with solid musical arrangements by Jeff Waxman, is a fountain of country/pop melody but offers few theatrical thrills - Denver simply did not lead a life of high drama. Director and choreographer Daniel B. Hess moves his troupe of singers in an efficient, polished manner. Among the six principals, Peter Carrier plays a personification of Denver and carries it off with a good voice and genial likability. Mark Shock handles his flexible tenor and has a good grasp of Denver's style, and he easily summons up a palpable intensity when needed. Matthew Naclerio's soft crooning is miles away from Denver's delivery, but he offers plenty of mood and involvement. The women of this production run a gamut of styles as well - Corrine Grover has the presence and voice of a typical Broadway ingenue, Abby Baum acts her way through her assigned songs with considerable involvement and a youthful voice, and Erin Parker, the most self-possessed and interesting vocalist of the lot, unfortunately has the least to sing. Musical director David Hahn and his band mates provide solid synchronized support, the scenic design by Sarah Martin is appropriately outdoorsy and the projections of nature give the show a bit more feeling of space. In all, "Almost Heaven" while not exactly a musical theater paradise - is a diverting show with an abundance of enjoyable, even memorable pop melodies. <*> <*> <*> <*> PEACE CLOTH EVENT From Inner Peace to Outer Space So much more than just a concert. This year we will be featuring some of the finest performers in Aspen. The intention of our event this year will be to focus on how we can create a peaceful environment by starting with ourselves and working outward. Our performers will be using the music of John Denver to emphasize the difference that each one of us can make. We will be entertained and enlightened by some great performers who are carrying on John's music and message in their own ways. Jeff Pine has performed on many national stages and will be sharing what he has learned, through his participation with successful environmental groups, about how a healthy natural environment effects peace. Ellen Stapenhorst will share her music and some of what she has learned from Tom Crum through her close participation as an instructor for Akai Works. Denny Brooks, former John Denver band member, will present some of his music and a few stories. Two time Kerrville New Folk finalist, Derek Arambaru will join us to share his passion for John's music and message. Mark Cormican will also be joining us to sing a few songs and talk about Plant It 2020. Chris Westfall will close out the show with some poignant songs by John Denver. Chris Collins, award winning radio show host on KPFT Houston and producer of the Windstar radio PSA's, will emcee the show and perform some special John Denver songs. Please join us for an afternoon that promises to entertain and reconnect you to the power of John Denver's music. Hear children's laughter instead of guns. John calls this...Peace.
