What came up in conversation was the ripple effect and how one tiny pebble makes an everlasting, ever expanding circle. John never saw himself or his music as much more than a small pebble, but he did know the concept of the ripple effect. Hal and I talked about if either of us felt that John knew upon his leaving that the seeds planted for over thirty years would now be sprouting exactly when they are needed. You folks are those seeds, because it is more than just music and memories, it is movement and commitment. When Hal and I said goodbye to each other (rather reluctantly) as each of us longs to stay connected because of how we were connected through John, a phrase that I often use came to mind- "Hal, sometimes the messenger becomes bigger than the message and they then have to stand back so those who must receive can read the message." That's about where you are- the mail has been delivered - what is done with it is all that counts...and each and every one of you count and each of you have messages to deliver. It takes 27-29% of a community to change the direction of a community..as a global player, do not discount your small percentage, when added to so many others, brings ripples of change...we are at the starting blocks each and every moment...run a good race. Keep your inner light shining, you never know how far it will go; or who will need it... John St.Augustine * * * An Interview with Dan Wheetman, former John Denver band member by Carol Sullivan Dan graciously agreed to an interview before the start of an evening performance of his Broadway show "It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues", which was nominated for 4 Tony Awards. "How will (my friend) Anna and I recognize you?" I said over the phone. "Oh, you'll just know!" Dan said. Boy, was he right! Into the backstage area of the Vivian Beaumont Theater of Lincoln Center in New York walked a 6 feet 6 inches tall Dan Wheetman. His imposing presence filled the room as he greeted us. We walked through the noisy streets of New York City into a tiny and quaint restaurant, where Dan put us at ease immediately while he passed on some Hal Blaine jokes and did a perfect imitation of Kermit the frog. So perfect, in fact, that I thought it was Dan doing Kermit's voice on John Denver's rendition of Dan's own composition, "The Christmas Wish", which is found on the CD "John Denver and The Muppets; A Christmas Together." Although it was Jim Henson on the CD, it could have been Dan, he was that good. In addition to working with John Denver from 1977 to 1983, Dan co-authored and starred on Broadway in "It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues", a play which recently closed after a stunningly successful 9 month run. He also co-wrote the play Appalachian Strings, which was performed at the Cincinnati Playhouse in 1999. He is the composer and was music director for the stage version of John Irving's "Cider House Rules", and won a Drama-League Award for Musical Direction for "Lost Highway-The Music and Legend of Hank Williams", performed in Los Angeles. Dan has worked as an actor, musical director, composer, and musician at DCTC in Denver, San Diego Rep, Meadow Brook Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Crossroads Theatre in New Jersey (which just won a Tony award for best regional theater), The Old Globe, Virginia Stage, Arena Stage in DC, and The New Victory. A father of five children, he said being on the road for 200 days in 1980 cost him his first marriage. He's married to his second wife now, with a home base in Seattle. Dan plays a mean guitar, banjo, harmonica (I can vouch for that!), and also played fiddle, dobro and sang with John Denver. In 1975, Dan had a band called "Liberty", which played the many local venues in Aspen. He was also an opening act for Steve Martin for 18 months. "Working for John Denver", Dan said "was just great." "John arranged for 2 stewardesses to host a first-class dinner on the plane with 2 bottles of champagne after every show. Sometimes John would fly the Lear jet himself, but mostly had someone else do it. The halls that they performed in usually sat 15,000 to 24,000 people as a 'typical gig'", Dan said. "It was John's live performances that were really touching", Dan said. They would do a 5:30 sound check, and sometimes have a catered meal backstage. Sometimes John would hire a macrobiotic cook, so that they could all eat healthy. John Denver would sometimes rent an entire theatre so after a show, they and the backstage crew could watch a new movie. Sometimes John would rent go-karts for everyone in the band. At Disney World, John would let the band ride Space Mountain as many times as they wanted. John once flew all the wives to Paris at the end of a long tour. And once flew them all to Rome, Greece and Egypt on an extended vacation; just for fun. Dan mentioned that they only stayed in the best hotels and ate food from the best restaurants in town, as he sipped his Merlot in New York City. One of Dan's first gigs with the John Denver band was in Australia, but Dan flew in late because he had an important gig, and missed the rehearsal. Dan was sweating, thinking of the last fiddle lick in "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and practicing like mad to get it. Of course, he was successful. Dan mentioned that John Sommers was very gracious in that he taught Dan the mandolin and fiddle parts for the Australian tour. The band members were very supportive and the "best in the business". Some of them worked with Elvis. Dan mentioned many names, including Jim Horn, Hal Blaine, James Burton, Emory Gordy, Jr., Glen d Hardin. (If I've forgotten some, please forgive me, I had some wine, too.) John was good about giving autographs, and according to Dan, met 30 or 40 fans each night, and made a point to remember their names. Dan said that working with John was an "A-1" experience; this from someone who was currently on Broadway, I thought was a very nice thing to say. The last time I talked with Dan, he was working on starting up a version of "It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues" for the West Coast. I implore you to see it; it's a wonderful production showing the history of the blues, in stunning musical examples, showing where black and white musical history run parallel and sometimes meet in bluesy musical style. <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> "John Denver Inspires Push Against Litter" by Mark Freeman February 2000 Medford Mail Tribune - Medford, OR ASHLAND -- Like hundreds of others from Washington to Georgia, Diane Novak finds that honoring dead singer John Denver is best done wearing bright reflective clothing and picking up discarded bottles of urine. Or fast-food wrappers, dirty clothes and god-knows-what-else motorists pitch from their cars along a 2-mile stretch of Interstate 5 near Ashland. "If we brought home all the car parts, we could probably build ourselves a car -- and we've found the screwdrivers and other tools to build it," laughs Novak, a 33-year-old substitute teacher. But to the Friends of John Denver, keeping a stretch of highway free of debris is perhaps the best way to honor the singer-conservationist, who died in October 1997 in the crash of an experimental airplane off the California coast. Novak runs the Oregon Friends of John Denver. There are such groups in 38 states and three foreign countries that regularly clean litter from highway shoulders -- just like Denver repeatedly told them to do in song at environmental conferences and conservation programs he supported. "Litter just drove him crazy," says Carole Kenney, a Colorado horse-farm owner who heads a Friends of John Denver Web site that highlights all the stretches of cleaned highways adopted in Denver's name." He used to tell us, if we didn't put litter on the ground we still needed to pick it up," Kenney says. Now, Friends of John Denver chapters are picking up trash as far away as England, Germany and Japan. In each instance, chapters contact their state transportation departments to adopt a stretch of highway for regular cleaning. In return, the states usually supply the reflective clothing and garbage bags for the actual cleanup parties and install highway signs touting the chapters' work. They all keep tabs on each other through the Internet, posting pictures of their respective Adopt a Highway signs. The groups are not all "Rocky Mountain High" and don't play Denver's "Annie's Song" -- a wedding staple -- repeatedly, nor rent "Oh God!" every Saturday night. "I like his music, but I don't listen to it every day," Kenney says. "I don't have the CDs blaring in my car." But they feel spurred to do something environmentally conscious because of him." John always let us know through his music and actions that he really cared about the planet," says Novak. "Before, I taught it in my class, didn't litter and recycled, but (Denver) inspired me to become active." Novak, who grew up listening to Denver tunes, was always a fan and watched the singer's last Britt Festival concert just weeks before his fatal crash. Already a don't-litter buff from childhood, Novak chose to adopt the stretch of I-5 from the north Ashland and Talent exits for litter patrol in Denver's name. As more Denver fans in California, Washington, Texas, Colorado, Georgia and other states started doing the same, they all came under the Friends of John Denver umbrella. "We usually have little competitions on who finds the grossest stuff," says Kenney, in Colorado. "Bottles full of pee that I find are the grossest. "Novak has conducted a half-dozen cleanups in the past two years, with the next one expected later this month. Previous ones have drawn more than a dozen helpers, some of whom travel from as far away as Roseburg and Chico, Calif., to grab and bag trash with fellow J.D.'ers."`J.D. people are different," says Robert Novak, Diane Novak's playground-designing husband and Jimmy Buffet fan. "I don't understand it at all. "I'm just the supportive husband, doing all the cleanups with her," he says. _____________________________________________________________ Editor's Note: Here in Kansas City (Home of RMH) Linda Bedell has a Kansas Friends of John Denver group that picks up litter along a stretch of I-635 in Kansas. ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= Laura Gardner I have just started a mailinglist called "JD Trading"!
