The West Virginia Division of Tourism last week took home two first-place national awards for its "Country Roads" advertising and media promotions materials. The National Council of State Tourism Directors (NCSTD) presented the Mercury Awards to the Division of Tourism for its television advertisements and media guide. The awards were presented August 16 at the Travel Industry Association of Americas Educational Seminar for Tourism Offices in Stamford, Connecticut. The tv campaign features two versions of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads," for which the Division secured the rights last year. West Virginia tied with Missouri for best tv commercials. "The recognition is most gratifying," said Bob Reintsema, Commissioner of Commerce and Tourism. "It tells us we are on the right road." Reintsema said that during this fiscal year, the Division plans to launch an aggressive national cable tv campaign featuring the ads. In addition, a new version will be broadcast statewide in partnership with the West Virginia Broadcaster's Association. The media guide, which is designed like a personal travel journal, highlights heritage tourism and features suggested travel itineraries throughout the state. It recently received a statewide advertising award. "These media journals are well received by editors and travel journalists," said Caryn Gresham, Director of Public Information. "To our knowledge, no destination in the country has employed this concept, which also includes a CD-ROM with photography and information about each attraction mentioned in the journal." This is the first time in the 15 year history of the National Council of State Tourism Directors Mercury Awards that the West Virginia Division of Tourism has been recognized. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - West Virginia's Web Page: http://www.state.wv.us/tourism/ or 1-800-CALL WVA <<<<<<<<< ooo >>>>>>>>> Frank DeLaMarre Concert: February 10, 2001 Doylestown, PA Reviewed by Carol Sullivan A small but appreciative crowd gathered on February 10 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania to hear Michigan native Frank DeLaMarre in concert. A cold and windy, wintry evening outside the Salem United Church of Christ turned warm and toasty from the natural warmth and electric energy of Frank's tenor voice. Opening the first set with the Dan Schutte Christian contemporary classic hit, "City of God", Frank showed he wasn't afraid to sing the "G" word in this appropriately liturgical venue. Alternating accompaniment by using different tracks of his most recent cd, "A Lovely Place," or by just playing his guitar, Frank proved his versatility and gave his audience great variety. It is easy to see why Annie Denver, in a February 1999 article in the Flint (Michigan) Journal, likened Frank's voice to John Denver's, when Frank sang "Perhaps Love" for her in Aspen. "When Frank holds a long, high note, if you close your eyes, and think of John, you can hear the great similarity in their voices. It is obvious to hear the Denver influence from listening to Frank's original songs, which speak of love, family and longing." Especially beautiful is the title track of his most recent cd recorded in Nashville with such John Denver luminaries as Kris O'Connor, Pete Huttlinger and Chris Nole. "A Lovely Place" speaks of dreams and love, "I dreamed that you were here with me, but now I awake only to see...It's just a dream, It's just a dream." The bright and lively "Everyone Should Love A Little Bit" should be a big, big hit on country radio. The lyrics are quintessential Denver-esque: "As the great bear rises slowly to see the angels in the snow, A child is dreaming, endlessly of the things she longs to know. The dreams are for the children and the love they need so much. For the mothers and the fathers and the hearts they long to touch." Another classic will be Frank's John Denver tribute song, "Take Him Home." Already played in churches as a funeral song for loved ones who pass on, the sheet music is available on Frank's web site. It is nice when a John Denver fan successfully incorporates what he learned from John and goes on to successfully record his own original songs without forgetting his roots. "A Lovely Place" and other Frank DeLaMarre cds are available from his website, http://www.frankdelamarre.com Carol Sullivan ====================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== Rocky Mountain Gold by Wayne Williams I see you in those mountains I see you wild and free I see you soaring through the canyons For all eternity And the music that you gave us Will always live inside my soul And the memories that I cherish Are like 'Rocky Mountain Gold' I see you walking through the forests With the snowfall on the ground Your guitar hanging from your shoulders With no one else around Now the world they did not love you, Always trying to put you down They could not see the beauty That you saw in the world around But I always will remember 'Annie's Song' and 'Grandma's Feather Bed' But the one song I will cherish That still resides inside my head Is the song about the mountains And the way the eagle flies Yes, the one song I most cherish Is your: 'Rocky Mountain High' ______________________________________________ "Rocky Mtn Gold" copyright 2001 Wayne Williams * * * The Voice by Marcia Barnhart Came the voice that stirred within each breast An awakening to see the world at its best, To find joy in the simple pleasures all around- The wind, the sea, the children, their sounds. That voice never ceased its powerful song Calling each member of man to belong, To a family which nurtures the universe And cares for each other, no matter the purse. But the listeners soon forgot to heed its call Caught up in their haste to climb so tall. Neglected and even scorned by fair-weather friends, The voice sang the Truth despite the new trends. Soaring to heights above us each day Whether by song or by dream or flying machine, He passed to the world of the Spirit above And left us to discover the key that is Love. Although he is gone from our world of today, His melody serves as our prayer for the way. Our pledge goes deeper than just a memory, But to serve mankind and keep the Eagle free. The day after the marathon the Soviet Sports Committee presented awards to participants. All the World Runners were honored. Just before the ceremony ended I took the microphone. In an auditorium where 90% of the listeners spoke only Russian, I had to encapsulate the moment in the most powerful words imaginable. I sang the last verse of John Denver's "It's About Time" line by line, giving the interpreters time to translate each line. "There's a man who is my brother, I just don't know his name. But I know his home and family, for I know we feel the same. And it hurts me when he's hungry, and when his children cry. I, too, am a father. Those little ones are mine.
