"I think John Denver music takes people back to a simpler, happier time,'' he says. But before you search through your dusty album collection for that 39-year-old classic Poems, Prayers and Promises, he invites you to visit the Largo Cultural Center on Sunday to see his show, Rocky Mountain Memories: A John Denver Tribute. "People just seem to feel good after the show,'' said Rich, 55. With his shaggy blond hair and round, wire-frame spectacles, Rich is a dead ringer for Denver. This visit marks his seventh trip to the Cultural Center. "He's got quite a following,'' said Jean Bridges, in the center's box office. "His first show at 2 p.m. is sold out, and the second, 7 p.m. show, has only 50 or 60 tickets left.'' Rich, who will perform on a six-string and 12-string guitar as well as banjo, began playing music in hotel lounges in the early 1970s in his home state of West Virginia. "Even back then, John Denver songs were part of my show, along with Harry Chapin and Jim Croce," he said. It took more than 25 years, but Rich's big break came in 1999 when Legends in Concert, an entertainment company based in Las Vegas, hired him to perform John Denver music. They booked him at their Branson, Mo., location. Rich, who admits to having a soft spot for Denver's song Back Home Again, remembers the day Denver was killed in a plane crash in 1997. "I was building my house here in Florida," he said. "It was a day like when Elvis died. You just couldn't believe it was really true.'' Does Rich think that just maybe a few folks might think John Denver music is just a little too … happy? "When John Denver was alive, there might've been an element from rock 'n' rollers like that. And, he did perform on shows like the Muppets, where he sang happy songs like Inch by Inch: the Garden Song,'' said Rich. "But you know, I believe he did those performances, like the Muppets, because it was a way of getting to people. He really wanted people to relax and just enjoy life.'' Kildare, Ireland March 26-28, 2010 Naas (Nas na Riogh ) literally means Meeting Place of The Kings. March 26-28 may not be a meeting of Kings but it will be the meeting place of John Denver friends and followers as the inaugural concert and workshop, “Creation!” takes place. The concert will be held at Toughers and the workshop at The Osprey Hotel all in Naas. The concert on Friday the 26th will feature Donna Lipman a long time friend of Denver’s and Peter Schroeder a singer/song writer in his own right. Lipman performed with Denver. You can see her on YouTube. Schroeder and Lipman both have CD’s available on I Tunes. Saturday, March 27 the group moves from Tougher’s concert hall to the Osprey Hotel for a workshop designed to unearth, nurture and ignite the creative passion that all humans are born with. Denver claimed that the most powerful group on the planet was the group that did nothing. Anne Browning director of the event states, “We all long to matter, to make a difference, no matter how small.” Creation! (a workshop based on What One Man Can Do) will leave individuals assured of their worth and inspired to create such a difference. What One Man Can Do is a film, started by Terry Lipman. Lipman died suddenly in June of 09 leaving the film based on John Denver’s life and philosophies unfinished. His widow, Donna has taken over the completion. A portion of the proceeds from Creation! What One Man Can Do will go towards funding the completion of the film and a What One Man Can Do movement. Naas will be the meeting place of this inaugural movement. It was a great call! I was at home in my studio working on some new material, and there was Pam with a phone on both ears! Ha! I received over 50 calls and email from excited friends, family, and fans. As each time zone got to their airing of the performance a fresh new list of calls would come in! Wow! The team using the song for their routine were the French pair of Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat! They performed a wonderful routine and I admit... I was selfishly hoping they'd win the gold medal! I'm so grateful to them and their coaches for picking my version of this wonderful song to showcase their immense talent and skills to the world.
