Denver, a longtime resident of nearby Aspen, was known for his passion for the environment, skiing and the Aspen area. The lift - called the Cirque lift - will be the first in the country to run solely on wind power. "Just as we explored ecologically sound ways to build the Cirque lift, we wanted to examine alternative energy sources to power it," said Aspen Skiing Company President and CEO Pat O'Donnell. "Aspen Skiing Company is committed to continually seeking better and innovative ways to serve our environment, community and guests." In a ceremony held today at Snowmass ski resort, Denver's family and friends gathered 12,510 feet above sea level on the recently renamed Rocky Mountain High ski run. Aspen Skiing Company officials renamed the run after Denver's famous song because of the area's natural beauty. Located entirely above timberline on alpine tundra, Rocky Mountain High is the highest lift-served ski run in the United States, and forms the upper part of the longest lift-served vertical descent in the country. The area is home to wildlife including elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and ptarmigan. The decision to name the run Rocky Mountain High was announced at Denver's memorial service last October. Rocky Mountain High opened earlier this winter, along with the Cirque lift. The lift was built in an ecologically sound fashion to protect the animals and their habitat. No motorized vehicles were used after snowmelt, and construction was planned around the mating and nesting schedules of the wildlife. To minimize visual impact and user numbers, Aspen Skiing Company chose to install a simple surface lift instead of a high-speed chairlift. * * * "San Francisco Fan Honors John Denver" San Francisco Chronicle 3/15/98 "Red House Painters" front man Mark Kozelek is putting together a tribute album for one of his unlikely heroes, John Denver. "I grew up listening to him. It's the right thing to do," the San Francisco-based cult rocker says. "His Name is Alive", "Tarnation", "Innocence Mission", "Sparklehorse" and "Clod Hopper" are already slated to appear on the record, and the singer is waiting to hear back from Elliot Smith, Hope Sandavol, J. Mascis, Acetone, the Palace Brothers, Kim and Kelly Deal, and Primus, whom he would like to see cover "Thank God I'm A Country Boy." The Red House Painters are doing a version of "I'm Sorry" for the project. No word yet on what other songs will be included. "Everyone I've talked to seems to be really enthusiastic about it" Kozelek says. "Some are fans, some just want to be a part of this thing." Kozelek is funding the project himself, with all the interested parties recording their contributions primarily in home studios. He plans on approaching a label for distribution once he has all the material compiled. "I don't know much about doing this thing, but it's cool," Kozelek says. "A lot of people who wouldn't normally have access to John Denver will get to hear his songs". - - - - - - - - - - - - COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION honors John: John was honored by being mentioned recently on the Academy of Country Music Awards Show on tv. The Nature Center is a popular tourist and education facility as well as a rescue/sanctuary facility for animals who cannot be returned to the wild. They are erecting a gateway to the "Birds of Prey" exhibit and have agreed to allow us to make that gateway into a permanent JD Memorial. We will attach a wood carving of an eagle flying into the sunset. Under that will hang a carving of the words to John's song "The Eagle and the Hawk" along with his name and dates of life. Not only because John Denver music was played and sang in a very heartfelt way by extraordinary singers, but also because of the feeling of closeness with everyone there, with the people that I already knew from other JD times, and with the people that I just met there... Random acts of kindness were everywhere anytime... and I still am in that special emotional loving state of mind... The surprises of the night were... Cassie, who sang "Yellowstone", and a beautiful song that she wrote for John, and Jesse Belle, who sang, 'acapella' a nice song written by a friend of her godmother. Milt Okun was there, maybe 'discovering' some of the performers of the night... I loved Frank DeLaMare's song 'Take Him Home', and I loved how Phil Christie, Kyle Vincent and Rocky Gaines, among others, performed John Denver songs. You could see how they love him... Special thanks to Val, David, Ann, Sue, Frank, Laura, Kelli, Maria, Phil... I enjoyed your company so much! ..... Love to you all...Carme. - - - - - - - - - "WE STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME" TV WEEK - Australia 2/7/98 It was an emotional night as famous L.A. Australians gathered to celebrate Australia Day. They were a long way from home, but Aussies in Los Angeles made their voices heard on Australia Day anyway. Most of them were singing-along with Olivia Newton-John, the special guest at the Australia Day ball held in Beverly Hills and sponsored by the Australian/American Chamber of Commerce and QANTAS. Fans also got to hear Aussie singer Cassandra Delaney Denver sing one of her former Husband, John Denver's last songs. The event was officially titled "Sea of Opportunities; A Celebration of the Waves of Change" in reference to the growing business relationships between the two countries. But it was also a celebration of all things Australian, capped off by Olivia's rare solo appearance on-stage to sing three songs. She launched into "I Still Call Australia Home", following it with her biggest hit (also penned by Peter Allen) "I Honestly Love You" and finished with a rousing rendition of "Waltzing Matilda", calling on-stage Cassandra, and her mother Lorraine. It was the eve of Olivia's trip home to tour with Sir Richard. Perhaps the most emotional moment of the evening was when Cassandra told the crowd "this is a very special song John wrote a few weeks before he passed to the other side, and I'm dedicating it to our daughter Jesse". As she sang the song titled "Yellowstone, Coming Home", she was accompanied in parts by the original tape of John singing the song; which brought tears to many in the audience. Later backstage, when Cassandra and Olivia paused for exclusive photos with friends, Cassandra told 'TV Week' why she decided to go public with the song: "I know John wanted that song to be heard, so I felt it necessary to make that happen" she said. "He's given some incredible messages in the past, and that was his last one - so I wanted to put that out there." "John was very close to Australia, and very much in love with Australia, so I know it would have been very special for him to be a part of this night - he would have been thrilled" she said proudly.
* * * Reviews of "Colors in Time", the new instrumental cd which is a tribute to John Denver by Pete Huttlinger and Chris Nole: http://www.sky.net/~emily/colors.txt ============================================================ From: "Harold Simpson I'm sitting hear in front of my monitor trying desperately to find the right words for what I'm about to say. In the mail today was Pete Huttlinger and Chris Nole's new John Denver Tribute CD COLORS OF TIME. It is literally taking my breath away..it is just BEAUTIFUL! I was hoping for something good from these two very talented musicians. What they've created goes beyond that, I'm getting tears in my eyes from the emotions that I'm feeling as I listen to it, it is an absolutely magical, pure, inspiring recording that I'm going to treasure for the rest of my life. THANK YOU so very much Pete and Chris. Harold Simpson - Hoopeston, IL USA --------------------------------------------------- From: "Aileen Blomgren I am sitting here listening to the cd done by Pete Huttlinger and Chris Nole, "Colors In Time, Musical Memories of John Denver." I can't even begin to tell you how powerful it is. When the first song started playing, emotions just swept over me...more powerful than I can ever express. Tears formed. This music is so beautiful! The music enters your soul. Right now, "For You" is playing and I'm struggling not to cry. It is both a happy and sad feeling. I warn you, this is powerful stuff if you are a JD fan. The beauty of the music will sweep over you. It is a wonderful feeling. Also, the sadness of the voice that is missing is sometimes overwhelming. This is a beautiful, beautiful cd. On a scale of 1-10, it's off the scale. Can you tell I like it?? Thanks Pete and Chris!!! I know I'm not the only 16 year old fan, but unlike most, I didn't discover John from my parents playing his records. It was 5 years ago, I was 11. I had just taken up the guitar but was getting frustrated with it and I didn't really have any role models on the instrument. Then one day I was messing around in the attic and I found a bunch of my uncle's old records. I took them down and started listening to them...The Carpenters, Anne Murray, I didn't care for any of them. Then I came to one called "Rocky Mountain High." I fell instantly in love with the music: the guitar, the words, his voice, his message, his image.. everything. I listened to that record NONSTOP for about 6 months. My parents had to pull the plug to get me to come to dinner. Then I joined BMG music club, so I was flipping through and I found John's Greatest Hits. I had to have it. I ordered it and on the day it came... I'll never forget that day. It was in the summer, I was in my room with all the windows open. You know how it smells when the windows are open. It was lovely, the fan was on and I was nestled in my chair with a ray of sunshine as my blanket. I hit play and sat in that chair listening to the melodies... songs I knew and songs I'd never heard before, but I felt like I'd known all my life. My mom came in and started singing along. I was amazed that she knew the words so she explained how she had John Denver songs in her wedding. As I said, I had started playing guitar about 6 mos. earlier, so I immediately learned all of the songs. As time went on I got The Rocky Mountain Collection, Greatest Hits Volume 2, and about 2 weeks before his death, Best of John Denver Live. I was a Denver fiend. My friends all mocked me and I answered with a chorus of RMH. After culminating my knowledge of him, writing biographies, and poetry explanations for English class, performing a repertoire of his songs for my English teacher, singing his songs at parties the day came. I don't remember how I heard about it but I knew that John Denver, the man I so idolized was coming to town. Tickets were $40 a piece, and I was broke. I started working tirelessly until I worked up the money. Me and my dad went to the Majestic Theater in Dallas and I experienced euphoria. It was the best day of my life. I'll never forget it. I had binoculars and I was watching him sing and hearing his voice, it was just as great as ever. I couldn't stop smiling from the point the went on stage until I went to bed that night. As we were leaving he said into the microphone "Everyone look at the moon as you leave, there's a full moon tonight" So I stared at that moon. I even bought a T-shirt for $20, which although it's too small, I still wear regularly. My friends laughed and laughed the next day when I wore the shirt, but NOTHING could take me down. Then the day came. I was lying in my bed Monday morning. My mom came in to wake me up. "Time to get up," she said "John Denver's dead" I moaned and rolled over to put my face in my pillow. I got up and dressed and then ran downstairs to watch the news. I flipped from channel to channel to hear the same words over and over and it was more devastating than anything I'd experienced before... or since. I got to school and my friends were all silent. I didn't pay attention all day. it was terrible. We have off campus lunch so when the bell rang, I went to my car as fast as I could alone... my friends were confused as to why I didn't wait for them, but I think they figured it out. Anyway, I still listen to his records and CDs non stop, I still idolize the man, I read books on him, I watch videos of him... I strive to be him. I just wanted to share that with you. thank you.... David Fisher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: andrea adams It seems funny to say that I miss him when I never met him in person. Yet, I think that I spent more time with him during my teen age and twenty-something years than I did any other person. It will always be one of my regrets in life that I never had the opportunity to shake his hand and say "thank you for all that you did to shape my life and keep me an idealistic, innocent person." Somehow, I think he already knows how I feel. His music is truly profound and will live on forever. He sang the truth. He gave from his heart. He was before his time. He is loved more than he ever knew. He will never truly die. Thanks John! - -- - Andrea ------------------------------------------------------ From: Dixie Henry - My first memory of listening to John Denver's music goes back to when I was four years old. I was sitting on the couch in our living room when my dad came in and put a record on the record player. He said, "Here's a song I think you will like," and he played "Grandma's Feather Bed." I was an instant fan. I'm 23 years old now, and I'm still a fan. Through the years, I have grown and matured with John's music. His lyrics have accompanied me through some of the most difficult times of my life, as well as some of the most beautiful moments. His words and philosophies helped me to form my own beliefs and values. This may sound strange, but John Denver helped me to become the person that I am today. Upon reading some of your comments, I noticed that one person said that they felt saddened by the loss of John and his music. I just wanted to say that we HAVEN'T lost John, and we certainly have not lost his music. He left a legacy greater than most people could ever hope to leave behind, and I hope that everyone will continue to learn and benefit from this legacy. It is my hope that someday, I will be able to share John's songs with MY children. For several weeks after his death, it was difficult to listen to any of the music. However, I have realized that as long as we continue to enjoy his music, John is still with us. John was an active member, and he had planned to fly his "Long-Easy" here this summer for the annual convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Sadly, we will not be seeing John at any more conventions, since he tragically lost his life doing something he loved and so believed in.
