It just doesn't seem possible. If anything, this guy was an over-achiever whose life story should be more awe-inspiring than yawn-inducing. And yet, a new CBS-TV movie about his life makes him out to be a whimpering simp. You have to read between the lines of tomorrow night's movie or do a little research on your own to form a more-complete impression of the songwriter whose talent was so prodigious that most of us would be able to hum or recall the lyrics of at least part of his best-known works even if they weren't still in radio rotation more than 20 years after they were first recorded. The John Denver depicted in "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story"--adapted from his autobiography, according to the movie's credits--would appear to have been too paralyzed emotionally to rack up the astonishing list of accomplishments attributed to the real-life man. Here's a guy who lived only 53 years, but in that time recorded about a dozen chart-topping hits; earned millions upon millions of dollars; criss-crossed the globe in support of humanitarian causes; performed in one sold-out arena after another; started an environmental foundation; established his own record label; learned to fly a Learjet; and built a dream house in the Rocky Mountains. Denver, who was killed in the crash of his single-engine, single-seat plane in October 1997, starred with George Burns in "Oh, God," acted in made-for-TV dramas, guest-starred on TV series, composed film scores, befriended Jacques Cousteau, and performed in such faraway places as the Soviet Union, China and Vietnam at a time when those places were considered politically off-limits to Western entertainers. His most memorable songs are cultural touchstones--"Leavin' On a Jet Plane" (recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary), "Take Me Home, Country Roads," "Rocky Mountain High," "Sunshine on My Shoulders" and "Annie's Song" (written for his wife at a time of marital discord, according to the movie). His greatest-hits album, released in 1974, sold 10 million copies and remained on the charts for two years. Much of what he accomplished indeed gets mentioned in the movie--mostly in the form of throwaway lines inserted into the dialogue--but somewhere along the line, the makers of "Take Me Home" decided it would make for a more dramatic TV movie if they placed the emphasis on the soap opera aspects of his life at home, where his marriage fell apart following years of lengthy concert tours and trips abroad to help the needy. The result is a movie that feels unbalanced (not to mention dry and dreary), with scene after scene of Denver (played by Chad Lowe, costumed in wig, round wire-rimmed glasses and sheepskin vest and lip-syncing to Denver's voice in concert scenes) courting, marrying, and then squaring off with his wife, Annie (portrayed with earnestness by Kristin Davis). Denver's fans--and there are many, judging by the number of Web sites dedicated to his memory--are sure to be disappointed in a movie that fails to capture the epic sweep of their hero's life. And that's a shame, since those fans are the people most likely to be watching tomorrow night. * * * From: Jan and Jim Wintonyk This is our first impressions of the movie. Jan is typing this with a kleenex to her nose! Just finished an emotional 2 hours of "Take Me Home". Overall, the story line was very faithful to the book, despite some time-line discrepancies. Amazing how they fit a lifetime of service to mankind and entertainment into a Sunday night! It was hard at first to visualize Chad Lowe as a young John, but as the story drew you deeper into John's early career you forgot to watch for the obvious differences. And differences there were! Maybe Chad should have watched some Denver concert tapes to observe how he acted on stage. We felt uneasy watching him swing his hips. It was obvious from the beginning that the story was being handled in a very loving way. Every aspect of John's life was handled in a way that told the truth, but, made every effort to preserve his dignity and legacy. Very hard to have captured all issues in such a small time frame, but we were really impressed with the scope that was tackled. We were pleased to see that the movie covered both the highs and lows of his life, and attempted to show how, at the end, he seemed to get it all together......The last camping trip with Anna Kate and Zak seemed to echo our thoughts of his contribution to all our lives. When the kids tell him how much his music means to them and the world, it could be all of us saying those things. Loved the part where Annie's patient describes what John's song meant to her and how it saved her life. We tried to imagine what it would be like to watch this program as someone who basically was not a JD fan, but remembered his music from the past. Would this movie move them to a higher level of respect for what John stood for and would it excite them to want and explore more of his music? And would it also clear up any misunderstanding that was spread by the "Tabloids"? The movie truly in Jim's eyes tried and succeeded in delivering a fairly honest and respectful version of the book. The final scene over Monterey Bay took my breath away. It's one thing to read about it and another to have it dramatized - very unnerving! Did it meet my expectations from the moment I heard about it? YES! There were some loving hands at work here. The sad fact is we will never see his smiling face on stage again or hear a new song he has just written.....only the music will never die! Jan & Jim * * * Review of "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story" by Emily M. Parris Just the titles of some of the media's reviews of "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story" tell that the critics were not pleased... "Home Movie Disses Denver" (New York Post), "Rocky Mountain Lows" (USA Today), "CBS Denver Debacle" (Reuters/Variety) and "Denver Drama Dumb" (Denver Post). It's true that the movie did not show John Denver the way we know him. It was a one-dimensional view of John; not the complicated and charismatic man who inspired us all over decades, and it didn't even begin to tell of John's accomplishments. But the movie was based on John's book, and we must remember that the book concentrated more on John's personal life and what he perceived as his failures, rather than celebrating his successes. There were many errors in the timeline as they showed "This Old Guitar" being played before John had even met Annie, and Zachary being adopted about 4 years after he was actually adopted. It makes you wonder how the producers could have so little regard for accuracy. Having the years printed during the film was a disservice since most of them were wrong and everything was out of order. Still, the movie presented the viewer with the tender love story between John and Annie, and many people may rediscover John's music after seeing this movie. * * * What The Fans Thought: ====================== * Louise Madison In regard to the movie "Take Me Home", NO ONE could play John as we would like, as John was one of those "once in a lifetime" people. He was SO special. His passion and compassion, his love of life, his respect for life, his talent, his very "aliveness" made him so unique. How could this all be captured and then conveyed? But, aren't we lucky to have him as our hero? * Ann There was so much wrong with the movie that it stopped making sense to pick it apart after the first 5 minutes. Gee, "This Old Guitar" in 1964. How creative of John to be able to sing a song he wasn't even going to write for 10 years. "Annie's Song" after "Oh, God!", the trip to Africa in the mid 70s (the real photos used made this especially funny), etc. Old recordings and newer recordings used in the wrong places...on and on. In general, it was a mangled up mess. * Sherry Traylor I watched the show last night and had mixed feelings. The opening scene with the farm house was definitely not Oklahoma. We don't have mountains like that. "This Old Guitar" came to be written 10 years too early, 1964 instead of 1974. Annie and John moved to Aspen in 1970 and into the house in 1971 not 1976. Also John and Annie were already divorced by the time RCA dropped him. As far as Chad Lowe- well not too bad but he wasn't John. I thought Chad did a good job portraying the mature John. Also the end was done tastefully. All in all it was a good show and I enjoyed it. I loved the part where Annie is listening to a client talk about her past. Kristen Davis did a wonderful job portraying Annie. * JoAnne My family and I watched the movie on John's life last night, and I guess the fact that it will bring John's music to new listeners is something to be greatful for, but the storyline left me disappointed. John's intense drive for the causes and concerns he worked so hard for was not there. The hesitant and stammering way Chad Lowe portrayed John during the movie was not the same John Denver I remembered and came to respect. John's music was a journey into his inner-most spirit. The fact that Chad Lowe did not look like John didn't bother me, it was the way he portrayed John that left me disappointed. The performance lacked the intense compassion that John had. I only hope that those who watched the movie, who are not familiar with John's career, environmental concerns, or many interests will go in search of his true spirit by listening to ALL of his music. * Collins Crapo When I watched the TV movie about John last night, I noticed that the chronological order of some events was switched around: 1. John and Annie adopted Zach and Anna Kate in 1974 and 1975 respectively, not after 1976 as the movie says. 2. John and Annie divorced before her cutting down the trees, his sawing off her headboard and the end of his contract with RCA. 3. As I recall, John actually met Cassie in 1987 and they married in 1988; the movie sets it 2 years later. * Bill Last night John Denver finally got the kind of national exposure that his life has long so richly deserved...I thought the movie was great, especially the ending. It was a night to rejoice in, not to trivialize by perfectionistic nitpicking. * Deb Woolsey Too bad they missed the mark. Before I saw the movie my greatest regret was that I never wrote John a letter telling him what a huge impact his music has on me. My greatest wish was to know him. After watching the movie, I realized although I never met him, I do know him, as I had no idea who that goofy guy on my tv screen was. To know the real John, all you have to do is listen. It is too bad they couldn't include some of his remarkable accomplishments. If this movie has brought new people to see a great human, just think how much more effective a more realistic or truer version might have had on people. * Pete Manetas Last night's CBS movie, "The John Denver Story", allowed me to go though a whole plethora of emotions and memories - things I hadn't thought about in quite some time. While I have trouble with the way John was depicted, I have to admit I thought long and hard on all the times in my life when going to his concerts made me feel so good and so inspired, and about the time when his music and words helped make me a better, more compassionate person. * Paul Lehto The intent of the movie, while often having inaccuracies, was to reconcile the public music with the lesser known private facts of John's life. In the end, some of these facts were woven in with the music in a way that reconciled the negative facts with the positive ones into an overall story that was positive and redemptive, and suitable for family viewing of all ages. The movie is a good first step to getting people a more complete picture of John Denver. * Lori It was hard watching Chad play John. There was something missing..like a magnetism John had as opposed to nerdy. I liked the movie and was disappointed at the same time... was touched and saddened...always hoping to get a new piece of information about John that maybe I didn't know before. John is one of those treasured things in life that you hold dear to your heart - a place that only he fills. * Katherine I saw the made-for-TV movie last night on CBS. I was fairly appalled. It was so obvious to me that no time was spent preparing for this movie. An actor who had no rhythm, couldn't play guitar, and also was obviously not a singer cast as John Denver? And can we talk about the horrible wigs. Obviously as low-budget as they could be. This is a TV studio with lots of money. They obviously just didn't really want to spend it here. * Gary What can I say? It wasn't a great movie and it did leave out lots of things but I'm still glad that somebody decided to do a movie about his life at all. As someone who grew up in Long Beach where John used to hang out by the lifetowers, his music touched me in ways I will never forget. * Chris Turner Was that a superficial view of John's life of what? It was more like an outline than a story. Although just listening was enough to make it worthwhile, it was incredibly difficult to watch the leaden performance of Chad Lowe, as John. Thank God they handled his last flight as they did. That was probably the only part that had any class. * Gene Well, what can be said about tonight's movie? Some bad acting, too many "Far out's", lots of stuff out of order. Too much time covered in too little time. And yet if the movie has already drawn at least one person to find out more about this amazing man, then it has accomplished its mission. * Sherryl Stalinski: I have received no less than a dozen emails from people who watched the movie and were marginally familiar with my work at Windstar. These emails all reflected a very positive impression and a surprising interest in "what he did outside his music career." I don't think a CBS movie will change the world's perceptions one way or the other. John's "legacy" was his life, not any movie made about him after that life. ============================= REVIEWS OF JOHN DENVER EVENTS ============================= John Denver Memorial Concert - Walnut Creek, CA 3/30/00 Review by Dominique Mintz I was so fortunate to be able to attend this concert. John Salestrom was featured along with several members of John Denver's band. Jim Horn was great! He is so talented and his cd, "A Tribute to John Denver" is a true pleasure to listen to. John Sommers played the fiddle, banjo and mandolin at the concert. He took the lead on the song that he wrote, "Thank God I'm A Country Boy". What a treat to listen to it played by the person who actually wrote it! Video clips of John's efforts in understanding the eagles were scattered throughout the evening's performance. But the definite highlight was when the gentleman who canvassed mountain sides showing John eagle's nests, shared his memories of John. At the age of 79 he repelled down a mountain with John only a few months before John died. It was truly a memorable evening. The music, "The Eagle and the Hawk", and the memories were just captivating. <<<<<<< o o o >>>>>>> From: Susan Leaver "THE WILD HEART LOOKING FOR A HOME" EVENT 24-25 APRIL 2000 Oneroa Community Hall, Waiheke Island, New Zealand - The programme began with clips of John on "The Wildlife Concert" video exhorting us to do the thing that feels comfortable to do to preserve the planet and encouraging everyone else to do the same. Following was local speaker, John Cowling speaking on "The hidden secret of freedom." Then we heard "Love is the Master" introducing Samuel Hartman, director of the Successful life planning institute of South Africa, speak on fulfilling our life's purpose. Over dinner we watched "the Christmas in Aspen" television special, followed by an address by Ross Guy, former director of Greenpeace, founder of "Save the Whales", speaking on his 30 year love of the oceans. Featured video of the evening was "Alaska - American Child." DAY TWO First off members of community groups of Waiheke Island spoke - from Community Awareness of Pesticides, Friends of the Earth, and the Eco-Lodge. As a result of this session the Waiheke members are networking and from that I would like to think a new branch of the Foundation will develop. We then had a brief interlude from "The Wildlife Concert" on screen, followed by a Whale rescue workshop with Ross. He had previously flown the Hauraki Gulf with John and Tom Crum looking for Brutus Whales. Each speaker spoke of exercising "conscious choices for the future." The major highlight of the event came just after it officially finished. A member of the local Forest & Bird Society had been assisting us with the hall set up and sound and would not take any money for it, so we offered him a donation to forward in any avenue he chose. He chose the local Forest & Bird Society - SO FULFILLING THE DREAM IMMEDIATELY - of future generations benefiting because of John's own commitment to the land. That gentleman is going to give that cheque to his committee and SPEAK OF JOHN to people who have no idea who he is at all. Peace, Susan Leaver International John Denver Memorial Foundation <<< * * * >>> April 29, 2000 - Altadena, CA - Earth Day Concert by Debra Sanderson Steve Stapenhorst opened, and they each did a different set for each of the concerts. Made me very glad I paid twice to attend both shows, because I would have missed "Old Folks-Singers" by Steve, and "Poems, Prayers and Promises" by Phil if I'd only attended one or the other. And I hope that those of you who did not attend the concert get the chance to hear Phil do "Yellowstone: Coming Home" live (or on cd) sometime soon. He does a remarkable job with the song. He's not a sound alike for John, but his interpretation is beautiful, and moving, and an incredible tribute to the song, to the wolves, and to John Denver's talent as a songwriter. ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= "Music and Communication", the John Denver Fan Club in Germany has a new web address: http://www.johndenverclub.de They also have special events coming up: Hamburg on May 27 Oberhausen on June 3rd Kirchheim/Teck on July 8th Sinzig near Bonn * Sept 30-Oct 1 John Denver Weekend (weekend@johndenverclub.de) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Directions to JD Memorial Bench in Central Park: New York City Enter Central Park at the West 77th St entrance.
