David Gorell Canberra Australia ===================================== REFLECTIONS: SONGS OF LOVE AND LIFE ===================================== A new John Denver album came out in stores in the U.S. on 10/29/96. This cd contains previously released material, but six of the songs are on cd for the first time. The cd itself shows an early picture of John and the booklet interweaves biographical data with other pictures from John's early career. 1. "You're So Beautiful" (3:07) by John Denver was originally on the album JD. So this is the first time it has appeared on cd. 2. "Dearest Esmeralda" (3:29) by John Denver and Bill Danoff is from the album I WANT TO LIVE. 3. "Annie's Song" (2:58). 4. For "My Sweet Lady" (4:23), RCA picked up the original, heartfelt version from the album POEMS, PRAYERS AND PROMISES. 5. "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" (3:08) is from the album SPIRIT so this is the first time this song has been available on cd. It was written by Burke and Van Huesen. 6. "For Baby (For Bobbie)" (2:56) 7. "Come and Let Me Look In Your Eyes" (3:46) by Joe Henry and John was originally on the album SPIRIT but also picked up for the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLECTION (2-cd set). 8. "Daydreams" (2:52) written by John, comes from the album RHYMES AND REASONS. So this is its' first time on cd. 9. The Lennon-McCartney song, "Let It Be" (3:38) first appeared on the John Denver album POEMS, PRAYERS AND PROMISES. 10. The soulful "What's On Your Mind" (4:26) by John came from the album JD and is on cd for the first time here. 11. "I'm Sorry" (3:30) is originally from WINDSONG. 12. "Rhymes and Reasons" (3:13) 13. "Molly" (3:46) by Rose came from the album TAKE ME TO TOMORROW and has never appeared on cd before. 14. "Sunshine on My Shoulders" (5:11) 15. "How Can I Leave You Again" (3:08) 16. "Fire and Rain" (3:45) - a James Taylor song from POEMS, PRAYERS AND PROMISES. 17. "Isabel" (3:22) is from TAKE ME TO TOMORROW. 18. "Goodbye Again" (3:37) 19. "Autograph" (3:36) 20. "Calypso" (3:34) John Denver will be Touring in the U.K. in March of 1997 ========================================================= March 11th, 1997 Edinburgh - Usher Hall (Tel: 0131-228-1155) March 12th, 1997 Glasgow - Royal Concert Hall (Tel: 0141-287-5511) March 15th, 1997 Birmingham - N.E.C. The following is a commentary on the Rocky Mtn High JD Web Site from a book called the "CyberHound's Web Guide". "net gain: There are all kinds of links about topics related to John Denver, like the environment and the Aspen news. netloss: There is so much material, but the page is not very well organized, making it difficult to find what you want quickly. Updated irregularly. Webmaster: Emily Parris" "Rating: contents (4); technical merit (3); design (2); entertainment (3)" ============================================ Emily's A to Z Guide for Rocky Mountain High ============================================ I took seriously Dave Farrell's comment that information was not well enough organized on the RMH WWW Page. To make things easier I added "Emily's A to Z Guide" which puts all the critical links in alphabetical order. I also was flattered that he rated the www page high on content, technical merit and entertainment value. I also moved the "date updated" closer to the front so that it would be convenient to change it whenever I update the page. Another enhancement is in the works. One of the documents that I have always considered to be important is the "Alphabetical List of all John Denver songs." It has been in a text file on the www page, but I am now working on turning it into an html document so that each song would link to a list of the albums it appears on. Watch for that to be completed sometime this month. ====================================================== J O H N D E N V E R S T O R I E S ====================================================== From: Kathy Lill Subject: "A Dream Come True in Dallas" by Kathy Lill I attended the concert at the Majestic Theater in Dallas on Sept. 25. This beautiful old theater made an excellent, intimate setting for a night of John's music. Even though I traveled by myself to the concert, I immediately felt at home among friends as the evening got under way. John looked and sounded great. Two of my favorites, "Today" and "For You" took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I've never had that happen except at a John Denver concert. A woman sitting in my row (2nd row from the stage and a great seat) had attended high school in Ft. Worth with John and brought her yearbook in hopes that he would sign it for her. What fun to see his class picture with the name: "John Deutschendorf" beside it, and John in his football uniform. Following the concert about ten of us made our way to the side doors of the theater and after about 20 minutes were told we could go backstage and meet John. I have often wondered what I'd say if I ever had the honor of meeting him, and now here I was face to face with John Denver. He was the gentleman I expected him to be, shaking hands, speaking to everyone, and patiently posed for pictures for those of us lucky enough to have brought cameras. All too soon the evening ended and I'm left with a memory that I'll never forget. Kathy Lill El Dorado, Kansas ----------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jayne Knew My 15 yr old daughter came home from school today with a little story. She was sitting in her history class, not paying the least bit of attention to her teacher as usual, when the teacher started saying, "Almost heaven, West Virginia". My daughter stopped and thought "Hey, that sounds familiar!". The teacher kept going, "Blue ridge mountains, Shenandoah River". My daughter is stunned as recognition strikes. "That's a John Denver song!" she says to herself. The teacher continues through the song. When she finished the song, she says "That is a song written...." And my daughter raises her hand and starts waving, and can hardly contain herself. The teacher says "Yes Samantha, what do you want" the teacher asks. My daughter says "That's a John Denver song!". The teacher asked her how she knew that, and she replied, "I ought to know it, I've grown up listening to John Denver, he's my mom and dad's favorite singer!". The teacher was reading from the history book "World Geography" by Silver Burdett and Ginn. They were learning how "popular art shows how both nature and human beings have shaped the character of a place". I just haven't figured out if this means the history in school is getting a little modernization or if John Denver is getting old. I guess it's a little of both. I just hope John is still singing "When he's 64". He'll never be too old for us. Jayne Knew ---------------------------------------------- From: John W Hall Subject: An Anniversary with John Denver In August I was looking for a John Denver concert on the Internet to take my wife Marcia to for our anniversary. As luck would have it, there was a concert in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. What a great place, how lucky could we be? The following is the itinerary for our latest adventure. Thursday, September 19: We worked half of the day then left Pensacola, Florida at 3:00 P.M. on our way to Denver, CO with two children (Matthew 3 and Michael 4 months old) and two grandparents (babysitters for the concert) in tow. Since flights were full from Denver to Jackson Hole, we started driving. At midnight we stopped at Laramie, WY for the night. Friday Sept. 20: On the way to breakfast Matthew spotted a brochure with dinosaurs on it. Since the journey is as important as the destination, now a detour to Thermopolis is required to see the dinosaur bones. I'm sure everyone knows how important dinosaurs are to a 3-year old. We ate dinner on the side of the road in a beautiful mountain pass and arrived in Cody, WY at 6:30 with time left for shopping and tennis. Saturday Sept. 21: All that stands between us and John Denver is Yellowstone and Teton National Parks, what a way to start the day. In Yellowstone we saw all of the required things (elk, deer, moose, and Old Faithful), except a bear, and played in the snow at 8500 feet. For the final push, all that is left is Teton, certainly one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'm sure God must live here. After check-in at the Alpenhof and a quick shower, we kissed the children goodnight and are off to the concert. At the auditorium we picked-up our tickets and were amazed to find that we were on the 6th row, dead center. Who could ask for better seats? As we waited, we notice a chair in front that is different from the rest, who could it be for? We are amazed to find out from John that the lady is Mardy Murie. What an honor to get to meet her and tell her of our love for Alaska (we've been 11 times in our eight years of marriage) and our appreciation of what she has done for us. The concert was wonderful of course. John sang many of his older songs (Country Roads, I'm Sorry, What Are We Making Weapons For, etc.) as well as some terrific new songs including Get Your Tongue Out of My Mouth Cause I'm Kissing You Goodbye, and my favorite since I'm an engineer with a dream to fly in space, Fly for Me, about the Space Program and Shuttle Challenger. He sang it with a very touching video that swells the heart with pride and almost brings tears to your eyes. John sure knows how to touch the heart. And of course, being SCUBA divers from Florida, Calypso (with video) was also a long held favorite. After the concert we went to a reception given by the Snake River Institute (a charity John promotes) and got to meet John in person. A perfect end to an anniversary celebration. ----------------------------------------------------------- ======================== POETRY CORNER ======================== LEAVING WITH A GLOW by Emily M. There are also JD chats - email me for times. ---------------------------------------------- From: John Subject: John Denver Greetings from Newcastle Australia. I joined the list last night, and just want to comment regarding the John Denver Concert we had at the Entertainment Centre here in Newcastle in November 1994. Over four thousand people (good for Newcastle) were there and enjoyed his music. I especially liked "Eagles and Horses". John recorded an Australian song some time ago called "A Little Further North." I know the person that wrote the song - Graeme Conners. Graeme is doing big things here at the moment. Finally - I feature John's works on my radio shows in Newcastle, 2HD Saturday nights 6pm to 12 midnight and also 2NUR FM Sundays 6am to 9am. Will be good to hear from fellow country music fans from USA.
