JOHN DENVER: LET THIS BE A VOICE ================================ In the months just prior to his death in a plane accident in 1997, John Denver was filming an episode of NATURE that centers on the natural wonders that inspired many of his best-loved songs. The result is a poignant and melodic film that records his final journeys into the wilderness and contains his last song, ("Yellowstone, Coming Home") composed while rafting along the Colorado River with his son and daughter. The program is scheduled to air on PBS Stations on Sunday, December 6, 1998 at 7:00 pm. So instead, this is my souvenir to impart to you, if you will, the part of the trip that I believe resonated to me what our love for John is all about, what our love for each other and the earth is all about. I think that all of us who journeyed either to Monterey or to Aspen (or even those who were at their homes, on their own) feel a greater peace now. A quieting inside. For myself, I feel different, somehow, and I can't quite articulate why. The Rockies were glorious, as I'd always known they'd be, my world family was a delicious treasure -- no matter where I went that weekend, I bumped into someone "connected" -- it was all as perfect as it could have been, and yet, that wasn't quite it. Maybe it was this....On Tuesday morning, my friend Sigrid (who came all the way from Germany) and I traveled from Aspen to Moab, Utah. Another dear friend, Virginia Allen, lives there and she and I have been corresponding for 15 years but had never met before this trip. So Sigrid and I drove Virginia back home and then stayed a few days to hike and "decompress". Moab is an entirely different location, geologically speaking, than Aspen -- the rocks are red sandstone and the ridges almost appear to be ruins with their loose rocks tumbling down to rest at their feet. There is a deep hum of the "west" here -- you can almost watch the Colorado River slicing into those vulnerable stones and carrying away the red sand, making yet another chasm, another canyon. And yet you know that what you're seeing took millions of years to make. Millions of years of rain and wind and heat. On Wednesday, we went to Arches National Park. Virginia has written a book about Arches and has even discovered several new ones -- small ones that most people don't even notice. So we hiked the park with her and marveled at the fascinating and weirdly beautiful towers of stone, almost like little islands left high and dry in this unearthly blue sky. The kind of blue sky you can only see from mountaintops, John said. Just before sunset, we went back to the park to climb up to Delicate Arch. This is the largest in the park -- easily 50-100 feet high -- but can only be reached by a hike up an almost bare rock trail (which becomes amazingly hot). We arrived there about a half hour before sunset and could feel how the light was shifting, how life was calming, waiting for night to approach. A pair of ravens were wheeling and circling around the arch, through which you could see the canyonlands spread out for miles, and a perfect oval of blue sky. We sat gazing at this scene, one with it, and I looked over at Sigrid, feeling overwhelmed with a rush of emotion -- this was it. I was in John's "west". Aspen was too crowded -- too close to "center". It was here that I was feeling "it". Next, Sigrid reached into her backpack and loaded a tape into her Walkman, and then handed me one of the earphones. The first song on the tape was "Yellowstone", and when I heard John begin to sing the wolf's cry, my heart began to sing too -- singing for our mother, our beautiful blue earth. I was moved to tears. We knew we couldn't stay up there because that meant we would be forced to hike off that spot in the slippery dark, the only light from the stars, as there was no moon, so reluctantly, we turned to leave. We did see a magnificent sunset -- purple, red, orange....tinting the rocks and making a "fire in the sky". The next day, Sigrid and I flew in a tiny little Cessna over Canyonlands National Park. Spectacular is the only word that even begins to describe it. It was truly like being an eagle, and that was where John began to come to me. In that little plane, soaring over his beloved west. I didn't hear his voice, I simply felt it in my heart. My beloved Eagle and the Hawk -- oh, I am the eagle... I understand, John. I have it now. So here I am home. Feeling changed. Warmed by those red rocks and the love of my brothers and sisters, many of whom I only just met this past week. What was Aspen? It was gazing at the Maroon Bells and remembering so many pieces of videotape of John there. It was seeing a woman I'd never seen before, sobbing and heartbroken at the It's About Time gathering Monday night (12th), and offering a hug, and receiving the embrace of a soulmate, it was hearing the music in the stars and sharing laughter and love. It wasn't really about John after all. It was about all of us. Dancing together, being one. Holding each others hearts and knowing a truth that only we can know -- within the heart of all of us, true love is all we need.....Love and peace, Ann =============================== From: Deborah My memories of the weekend are a blur!! It was one wonderful event after another! Everything blends into the other! It started with about 20 of us gathering for dinner at the Cantina on Friday night. We sort of overtook the place! It was a chance to meet and get to know some of these email addresses we've been corresponding with!!!! Real people at the other end, honest! I'll back up a little. Friday during the day Jan, Jane from NH and Karolin and I went to Woody Creek Tavern for lunch. Then we took a drive through the area and little did we know, we were driving past the ranches of Don Johnson and several other famous people! We found out the following Tuesday when we took a jeep tour! On Saturday many fans met at the Gondola and we had a photo shoot with the famous Muppet canvas and Mrs. Muppet herself! I had a ticket for the concert Saturday night and was just awed by the talent and the presentation of the concert! Molly Weaver sang "The Eagle and the Hawk" and it just about took the roof off the opera house! John Sommers fiddled and played the banjo and got us all clapping and singing! I was lucky enough to go to the concert again on Sunday night. Karolin sold me her ticket. I went to the VIP party after and got to talk to the entertainers. Got some photos too. Bill Danoff was very friendly and chatty. The service in Snowmass on Sunday and the dedication of the garden was beautiful. Karen had her Earthbeat choir sing and Ellen Stapenhorst also sang. The Jerome event on Monday was nicely done. Erma and other family members attended most of the events. They were gracious and patient with all the fans who wanted to talk to them. Ellen Stapenhorst sang for us and there were many others. Sad to say, she was the only female performer! This was true at all the events. Although the male singers were good, they did NOT sound like John or sing like him. They have their own voices, as John had his. No one can replace him or his voice. So next time, why not let some of the women who wanted to sing participate? That was my only disappointment about the events, not enough female singers. I attended HIH and the Tower dinners too. All of this was kind of overwhelming and I'm still processing it all. Blessings, Deborah ======================== From: Cathie Marx Hau Kola, my family, Well We are all unpacked and things put away. Pictures are developed and about to be scanned or put into the book. I feel so sad and separate again. First it was so great meeting people and getting to share. putting voices and pictures with names is so wonderful. It was fun running around Aspen and every 10 feet bumping into someone form the world Family. We went out to The Maroon Bells on Friday and we had planned on spending just an hour or 2 there. We spent 3 1/2 hours cause we kept bumping into people. It was great. Some events were longer than others but I think they went exactly the way they were supposed to go. Some I wish were longer. THe Labrinth and Medicine wheel was a good way to get centered for Dave and I. The Jerome was awesome. The Earthbeat Choir was such a treat. I was able to talk to Jim Horn. He was really sweet. The "campfire" with Pete Baker was awesome too. I was able to get up and share and that is always a challenge for me but that was the neat thing about that event for me was that there were so many that could get up and share. THe HIH dinner was special. Chris Westfall is really good. THe magician at the Tower dinner was a ton of laughs. He shared a few pictures of when he met JD and how John would come in and share. The late night campfire was so special. To be out at the Bells at night with friends, JD music, and fire was something never to forget. The Dedication of the Memorial grove was very special. I got to give Erma a book of Photos that I had made up for her. She shared a special John story with me that I will treasure forever. I can truly see why John was so wonderful with her as his role model. SHe is one special lady. Uncle Abe was totally cool. He reminds me of my Uncle Danny. I hope this warms your heart and lets everyone know how special this weekend was for me. I hope we all stick together and carry on John Legacy. We can do it together. I love you all!!!! HAVe a great JD Day and sing a JD SONG!!!! Love and Hugs..... Cathie ========================= OCT 11, 1998 - Clearwater, FL From: Sue Getz The October 11th Celebration of John Denver's Life event held in Clearwater was a success! 30 of John's loving fans met under sunny skies at Moccasin Lake Park. Our potluck dinner was held in a wooden A-frame style building with John's singing surrounding us. We shared poems some people had written, and special memories some had to share of meeting and knowing John. We had 3 separate performers play guitar and sing John's songs for us, and we all joined in singing along - as if they could stop us! We dedicated a plaque in a nearby shady butterfly garden, with a meditation pond, and flowers in bloom. The plaque says "John Denver - Dec. 31, 1943 - Oct. 12, 1997 - Though the singer is silent, there still is the truth of the song. Donated by your friends." It is a lovely space where people can gather at anytime to remember John. We also raffled off 2 photo prints taken and signed by John, the money going to John's causes. It was a beautiful day and John was with us in spirit. And because of that, our spirits soared remembering him. Sue Getz KFIZ On-Air Interview 10/12/98 =============================== On Oct. 12, 1998 Radio Station KFIZ in Fond Du Lac, WI did a special 2-hour tribute to John Denver as part of their regular "Backstage Live" program. Joe Scheibinger is the host. During the program I was interviewed and told about Rocky Mountain High. Gary "Cookee" Coquoz was in the studio along with Tom Poberezny, the president of the Experimental Aircraft Association. John was remembered fondly during the 2 hours and I was glad to be a part of the show......Emily To thank Joe for having the show write to: joe@kfiz.com www.kfiz.com www.stjohn-artists.com ============================================= From: Roger Speakman Now age 40, I have been writing poetry since high school. The several creative influences who always come to mind are, John Muir, Robert Frost and John Denver. The latter in particular because his works were current and accessible - I saw him perform in person on several occasions. Besides his works being enjoyable and inspiring, he, by his example, was an inspiration. Just prior to first really giving his music a listen, I had visited the Colorado Rockies for the first time in the summer of 1973, when I was 15. I had already heard "Rocky Mountain High" but had paid it very little attention to that point. Coming back from that visit on my own Rocky Mountain high, I gave it another listen, discovering the wonder and beauty in the lyrics of some of the other songs on the album. I was particularly moved by the lyrics of "Poems, Prayers and Promises". At some point around that time, I remember claiming it as one of the best songs I'd ever heard - my all-time favorite song. The last time I saw John Denver perform in person in 1995, I waited, song after song for "Poems...". It was a great show, as always, emotionally enthralling and uplifting, but the end came and he had not played my all-time favorite song. He and the band left the stage as we all applauded for an encore. He returned to the stage, alone, and my heart leaped as I heard the opening musical line of "Poems...". As I began my junior year in high school (1974), my status as "Serious John Denver Fan" was solid. During this year of high school, I took an elective class, Creative Writing. During the section on poetry, John's example helped me in choosing subject matter, as well as an approach. Around this time, I'd seen him perform in concert for the first time, during his "An Evening with..." tour. My long-time friend and present roommate, Mike, as well as my sister and one of her friends attended with me. This all contributed to my poetic inspirations, but I believe it was following attending that first concert that the following lines came into my head. I never used this in a class assignment nor have I ever published it in any of my previous poetry books. It is a teenage fan's impression of what John Denver's philosophy on life was - I think, to the end. And it goes something like this: Oh, It goes exactly like this: And says John Denver, Can't you see How simple life was meant to be: We must live life at its best And never live life as a test. - Roger Speakman, November 11, 1997 My Poetry Book is available upon request to any interested readers. $2.50 to cover printing and mailing.. Roger Speakman/10141 Armstrong Plz./Omaha, NE 68134 ======================================= GEORGETOWN, CO and "The Christmas Gift" ======================================= From: Harold Simpson Letter Day.....The Legend.....Busy Bee Cab Company ....Georgetown,Colorado. If any of these things hold special meaning to you, it is most likely you are one of the lucky ones who remember the 1986 television Christmas special starring John Denver titled, THE CHRISTMAS GIFT. A heartwarming story about a New York City architect and his seven year old daughter who move to a small town in Colorado to try to forget his wife's death. This is another of several magic moments I want to share with you about my "Aspen Experience," and it begins in Georgetown, Colorado. The same town that was featured in THE CHRISTMAS GIFT. My family and I happened to stop for an afternoon snack at the Full Circle Cafe in Georgetown and by chance struck up a conversation with the co-owner, Becky Richardson. I told her of our plans to attend the Reunion Tribute to John Denver in the next few days at Aspen and she pulled up a chair to begin what was for me to be a most rewarding conversation. Becky asked if I had seen the movie, "THE CHRISTMAS GIFT?" I replied,"Yes, that is the reason we had stopped in Georgetown." She asked if I remembered letter day and the story of the legend, to which I responded, "Indeed I do." She went on to explain that there was in the planning, a recreation of these things in honor of John and asked that I announce it to all of you by way of the internet. On the night of November 28th, there will be a gathering around the very same evergreen tree used in the making of the TV Christmas special. The tree is alive and growing strong near the center of town, although much larger than it was when the movie was made. That's where we come in.....with decorations. The tree will be lighted in a special lighting ceremony along with singing Christmas songs and the telling of the story of the legend of Georgetown. The following day, November 29th, will become official "Letter Day," in Georgetown, Colorado. It's the day you can mail your letters to Santa Clause at the Georgetown Post Office and have the letter stamped with the special letter day cancellation stamp. We are all invited to help make the Georgetown Christmas tree a little more special by creating ornaments that in some way relate to John Denver. They should be made LARGE, at least 17" or so, to go along with the scale of the tree. (The tree is about 80 feet tall now.) They should be weather and wind proof. Becky will see to it that they will be stored and kept safe for reuse in the coming years. They need to be made and sent soon so that they can be used for the tree lighting on Nov. 28th. You can send them to: Becky Richardson / P.O.Box 639 / Georgetown, CO 80444 The town of Georgetown, CO, invites you to be a part of these two special days. At this time, the home video of The Christmas Gift is unavailable, but an effort is being made to change that. I think some video stores do have it available for rent. To have an opportunity to help Georgetown not only celebrate Christmas but also do it in such a way as to honor John with Letter Day and our decorations, well, I simply want to be a part of that. I hope you will, too. =========================== COMPACT DISC REVIEWS =========================== REVIEW of Jim Horn's "A Tribute to John Denver" From: Rick Capone I haven't enjoyed an instrumental CD/album of John's songs this much since Lee Holdridge's album. Each song is crafted with a special touch -- an alto sax on some songs, a flute on others. Keyboards and guitar strings are sprinkled throughout, making this a beautiful, relaxing and very enjoyable instrumental tribute to John's music. The 12 songs on this album are: "The Eagle and The Hawk," "Sunshine On My Shoulders," "Poems, Prayers and Promises," "Annie's Song," "Leaving on a Jet Plane/Goodbye Again," "Fly Away," "My Sweet Lady," "Follow Me," "Rhymes and Reasons," "Country Roads," "Whispering Jesse," and "Calypso." All of the songs are gems, but a few stand out even more than the rest to me. One of my favorite songs on the CD is "Poems, Prayers and Promises." Jim Horn says on the notes on the CD liner that "Hunter Lee's solo on "Poems, Prayers and Promises" adds heart and soul to a beautiful melody." And that is exactly what it is. A beautifully done version of one of John's best songs. Two other standout songs on the CD are "Calypso" and "Country Roads." "Calypso" was one of my favorite songs to play," Horn says in the notes for the CD. "John would turn around and give me a big smile when he heard me emulating the sounds of the ocean and the seagulls. That was our way of communicating on stage." "Calypso" is the final song on the CD and it is a perfect way to end this great collection of songs. And, just when you thought there was no new way to hear "Country Roads," this CD has one. This CD's version of "Country Roads" is definitely a special version of the song that Horn and his friends share with us. It is a reggae version that he and Richie Garcia would play for John. Now I know what you're thinking -- a reggae version of "Country Roads!" Sheesh -- no way. Well, that's exactly what I thought too. But you know what. All I can tell you is wait until you hear it. You're going to love it. Just like John did, according to Horn." John loved reggae music and we (Richie and I) played it just for him," Horn says. The version on the CD is played by Jim and the Muscle Shoals Horns - Henry Thompson, Steve Patrick, and Charles Rose. Having these musicians play the song along with him was the "icing on the cake," Horn says. On the notes of the CD, Horn also talks about how he came to play with John. "In 1979, John called and said he wanted to try something new in his music...," Horn says. "From then on, I was the wind, water, and birds in his music. "Listening to the songs on this CD is Horn's tribute to John and, most probably, also was a way to say good-bye to his good friend as well. That he was nice enough to share the music with all of us, John's fans, is just the "icing on the cake" for all of us as well. Thank you Jim Horn. For information about Jim Horn's -- "A Tribute to John Denver" go to his web page at:http://www.jimhorn.com or email for information to info@jimhorn.com ----Rick Capone ========================= REVIEW of "A Celebration of Life" From: Rick Capone One of my favorite things to do when a new John Denver album would come out was to sit back and listen to it in the quiet of the morning, just as the sun was getting ready to come up. Morning has always been my favorite time of the day and to get to start the day listening to John's newest songs was one of life's great pleasures for me. After his passing last year, I figured I'd never get to do that again. However, very slowly, some new material from John is beginning to emerge. New renditions of old songs, some new songs, and I've even found a site that contains international releases of his songs. Life's little pleasure's are still hanging around and recently I got to enjoy a morning with a few new versions of some of John's songs. The CD I am talking about is John Denver's - "A Celebration of Life." It contains 12 tracks of previously released songs by John. However, these are new recordings of those songs so it's like listening to them for the first time. The 12 songs include: "Whispering Jesse," "Dreamland Express," "Rocky Mountain High," "Country Roads," "Christmas for Cowboys," "Love Again," "Sunshine On My Shoulders," "Perhaps Love," "Leaving On a Jet Plane," "Windsong," "I'm Sorry," and "Back Home Again." I could probably write a paragraph or more about all of them, but I'm sure you don't want to read a novel, so I'll just limit it to my three favorites. "Whispering Jesse" is one of my "newer" favorite songs from John and he didn't let me down this new version. The song if filled with string instruments and a single flute fitting in perfectly. His voice is very mellow and smooth, one of the nicer recordings of this song that I have had the good fortune to listen to. "Country Roads" has always been one of his classics. Filled with great guitar and banjo playing, this song is always one that catches my attention. There is also a slide-guitar or a dobro used in this version, which adds an even nicer touch to it; kind of haunting, yet "down-home" at the same time. Next to "Poems, Prayers, and Promises," which is not on this CD, "Sunshine On My Shoulders" is my favorite Denver classic from his earlier hits. This CD contains the long version. One of the first times I heard this song was on a cool autumn day. I had the house to myself, the windows open with the breeze blowing through the living room, and I was sitting on my favorite rocking chair just enjoying the afternoon. Every time I hear that song I remember that day from a long time ago. Things were simpler then. Each time I hear that song, especially a newer version, it brings back those memories. And this version is one of the best. Anyway, this is a really enjoyable CD of John's songs and I wanted to let you all know about it. To me, it is definitely worth adding to your collection.----Rick Capone ====================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== In the Winter of My CHildhood by Kelly Marie Norman In the winter of my childhood You filled me with spring When my soul cried for someone Of love did you sing You filled up my senses You quieted fears You were my sunshine That dried up my tears That day of sweet grief You hung in the sky And fell like the eagle I'll never know why But your song lives on still With each death, and each birth And it's almost heaven Because you were on earth copyright Kelly Norman 1998 ================================ One Year by Carole Romanowski One year has passed and we were changed Because of the spirit of one man. And he was still with us and rearranged Our vast universe to understand. His warmth was golden sunshine when we were cold. His Spring a quiet, winding country mile. His caring devoted comforting of the sick and old. And his tenderness the trusting hug of a child. His game was the one the dolphin's play. His freedom an eagle's boundless, lofty flight. His smile was a beautiful, sunlit day, And his brightness glowing stars in the night. His caress was a gentle summer breeze. His blanket ivory snow on the fertile plain. His comfort our expression of inner peace, And his tears were the softly falling rain. Did you feel his essence on the mountain top? Or hear his laughter when cooling winds blew strong? Did you heed his cry for all warfare to stop? Do you know the inherent truth of his song? One year has passed and we are still here, But his being did not ever end.
