In a very real sense, it brought him back to life in my memory and my heart. Thank you all so very much! Singing John's songs with Jim Curry and his friends, in a very real sense, took me back some years to the time when John and I sang together. To sing together - to really sing together, people must be totally in tune, not only in the music but interpersonally. And John and I had that kind of harmony. Thank you once again for the opportunity to remember this. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John Denver Memorial Flyover 2000 by Laurie Olson Some might think that my desire to participate in the Long EZ memorial flyover in Pacific Grove this year was disrespectful or even macabre. After all, our beloved John Denver left us during a similar flight over the area three years ago. Yet, from my perspective, it was literally a sacred experience and one that made me feel closer to him.The first thing that comes to mind in remembering the flight was the thrill of meeting the three Long EZ pilots who made the flyover possible. If John (McAvoy), Ned, Jay and his wife Margot are representative of the pilot community, then I can't imagine a more wonderful "family" to be part of. Our John surely fit right in and must have enjoyed every moment he spent in that amiable world. Another important element of the experience was the realization that the Long EZ is truly a fun plane! Admittedly, I had some trepidation about getting into this so-called "experimental" craft, but any fear I had was quickly extinguished as soon as my pilot strapped me in. The Long EZ is so small that you practically "wear" it. How better to feel part of the sky? It's fast and smooth and, although it sounds a bit noisy from the ground, it's relatively quiet on the inside. John loved flying and even said he wanted to come back as an eagle. In this life, I don't think he could have come much closer to experiencing the thrill of flying the way a bird flies. There aren't grand enough adjectives to describe the flyover itself. From the moment the three planes took off in formation, it was like being part of a ballet. This flight demanded that the pilots hold their aircraft as close together as safely possible and follow a specific route. I salute each and every one of them for their precision. Of course, the view of the bay and peninsula from the air was spectacular. I always love gazing out the window of a plane. It goes without saying, though, that this flight was particularly meaningful. Three images are burned on my mind. It was an overcast day, but west of shore the sun broke through strongly in several places, casting golden beams of light on the sea. Surely, that vision must have been what John meant when he sang of sunshine on the water. Flying east to west over the section of sand we have come to call "John Denver Beach" was also moving. Knowing that my friends were there, surrounding the Peace Cloth and looking skyward, made for a very poignant moment. I felt an awesome responsibility being up there in flight, in a way representing every person on the beach below. Finally, after the initial flyover, my pilot broke away from the others and circled around for a solo run across the beach, this time from south to north. From what I have read and heard about John's final flight, the scene unfolding below me very likely contained the last images John saw on this earth - the magnificent shoreline, the lush green golf course, the beach, and the castles of stone rising up from the water. I took a number of photographs during the flight but, during this segment, I could not bring myself to raise the camera. I simply wanted to drink in the moment. It was an incredibly spiritual experience and, as I said at the beginning of this article, a sacred one. I hope that when it's my time to join him, my final moments are as full of spirit and energy. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pacific Grove - 10/8/00 - - - Dennis Ducey: Just wanted to say it was cold and windy Sunday, but the warmth of all the wonderful people we shared Johns music with, warmed me through and through. It was a time I'll not soon forget. Thank you Joe for sharing your wonderful memories of your experiences with John, you made me laugh and cry, and added a new dimension to my love for John. I want to add a special thanks to Shirley for sharing her wonderful songs. What a voice and what a talent for writing songs. I can't find the words to express how much it means to me to hear new songs that touch my heart and fill eyes with tears of joy the way John's songs did. In closing, I want to thank all of the special friends have I come to know and love, over the past two years, for being there and a very special thanks to all the members of the "John Denver, The Legacy continues" for creating this wonderful weekend. John said it right, I love you people..... Dennis - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One World Peace Cloth - Pacific Grove and Aspen From: Debra Thanks to Leslie Newman and everyone in Pacific Grove for their support of the One World Peace Cloth. I took the other four panels to Aspen for display there. Initially the Cloth was to be displayed only at the Tapestry event, but there were other plans unknown to us that were at work...we ended up on Sunday, due to John's family's wishes, having the Cloth displayed at Windstar on the Aiki Platform. It was perfect. Erma and John's family were there to see the Cloth in its entirety and it was a beautiful day for this. The sun was bright and it was a beautiful day. Erma walked around the entire Cloth. She was just beaming from all the love and prayers that this Cloth had come together to represent and she was thrilled to point out to everyone the pieces of John's jeans that she had sent in for the Cloth. Also, Anna Zapp was there. She made John's concert clothes for 10 years and had sent in a beautiful panel for the Cloth, recreating some of her shirt designs. We intend to continue to display the Cloth throughout the world and in fact are working with someone to have the Cloth at the 2nd anniversary at Columbine High School, along with donating the The Peace Poem by John Denver for permanent display at the school. There are in fact many possibilities in the works. Together we are continuing the legacy for peace, our beautiful Mother Earth, and our children... Debra Chilton ASPEN EVENTS: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John Adams Celebrates the Music of John Denver 10/11/2000 by Jesse Coffey I arrived in Aspen with just enough time to get to the Wheeler to see this show. The evening started with a gentleman, outside the Opera House, who offered me a ticket. When I offered him the money, he said, "no thanks...and there's a story to tell." Of course, I was curious. Don told me about the previous year, when he and his wife had come for a holiday and it just happened that they arrived in Aspen at the same time the Wheeler concerts were going on. Being sold out, he and his wife had no hope of getting a ticket, but they stood outside anyway. They didn't wait too long, as a woman came out a few minutes before curtain and gave them two tickets. She refused money as well, saying that several of her family members couldn't make it and the tickets were a gift. She only asked that the gift be passed on in the future. I have to tell you, up front, that I don't like impersonators. I'm rather reticent about seeing any Tribute concerts because I want only one man singing his music...John Denver. But, as someone said recently, if you want to keep the music alive, you sing it. You do everything possible to keep OTHERS singing it. The music lives on...and the man lives on. Good point. So, I sat in the balcony at the Wheeler on this night, and enjoyed an incredible evening of music with John Adams. How can I not love a man who begins his show with my favorite John Denver song, "The Eagle and the Hawk"? With his friends, he created an evening of music and fun. Mr Adams was accompanied by Guido Bos (from the Netherlands) on keyboards and grand piano, Amy Hawes on bass, Randy Utterback on mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and assorted guitars, and helping out with backing vocals, local Julie Paxton, and from California, Ellen Stapenhorst. But the surprise of the evening was the appearance of Jim Conner, who joined for several songs, including "Grandma's Feather Bed". Jim Conner was a crowd favorite, and he always is. The man's good humor and Southern charm is infectious. From "The Eagle and Hawk", John went on to "Windsong", "Back Home Again", "Rhymes and Reasons", and "Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio". Stu Ramstadt, one of JD's friends and Alaska buddies was in the house, and John dedicated "Alaska and Me" to Stu. "Me and My Uncle" was next and Amy's bass solo in the middle was incredible. In my opinion, she gave Alan Deremo a run for his money. John's next song had me in tears, with "Healing Time on Earth" (Let the Rivers Run), an excellent job, and followed it up with "Yellowstone, Coming Home". There were plenty of fun songs with "It's A Sin to Tell A Lie". And then, Guido accompanied with "I Watch You Sleeping". John was joined onstage by a group from the children's choir he'd worked with this past summer. Adams spent time with the "Earthbeat Choir" at four music camps, teaching the children John Denver's music. Keeping it alive in the next generations. I like John Adams. I like his style and his voice. When you go to listen to this man, you can see immediately that he's not doing this to make a buck. John Adams is very sincere in his appreciation of John Denver's music, and he sings them to make sure we don't forget. He sings the songs with love and deep respect for the man who gave them to us. The evening was full of fun and enjoyment, and if you weren't there, you missed an event. You missed a night of love and laughter and tears and joy. You missed good stories, good songs, and good vibrations. Yeah, I was given a great gift this night. And next year, when the time comes to go back to Aspen, I'll be as close to front row center for this man's show, and I'll be passing on the gift to someone else. Because, I want someone else to have a splendid an evening I had this night. Thank you, John Denver...and thank you, John Adams. And, thank you, Don. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mary Ledford 10/28/00 Well, we're finally "back home again" after three weeks "on the road"! Gee, those strangely sound like song titles! Aspen was Wonderful and Pam and I want to thank everyone for a very successful auction. We raised $7,000 for Long View Media and Sandy was thrilled. Now she can do the DVD for "Song For All Lovers" from the Mardy Murie Film which may go to home video sooner than expected. I hope you all got to see the film about a remarkable lady. After Aspen, Pam and I drove to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and got to meet Mardy and see the beautiful cabin she lives in with a view of the Grand Tetons that would knock your socks off. I took lots of photos. We read her some of the entries in the book they had at the film and she was quite moved. There was a little tear coming from her eyes. I know why John fell in love with her spirit...so did we. We found her book "Two In the Far North" at a little book store in Jackson Hole and they even had a photo of her on the wall. Aspen City Council passed, on 10/8/00, a proclamation making October 11-15 John Denver week. I also want to thank everyone who came to the Cantina on Monday evening. There were some great discussions and hopefully our event next year will be even bigger and better. Peace-Mary - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Melanie: The Sunset Ceremony was the first event I had the privilege of attending. It was great. Margit and Eileen did a marvelous job of bringing it all together and though it was a bit chilly out there....the camaraderie of friends made it all the more warm. The campfire to me, was a disappointment, but, I was expecting this big huge bonfire.....by the time we got there after the Sunset Ceremony there wasn't a place to sit and my friends and I had to hover behind the crowds and couldn't hear the singalong. The tapestry in Aspen was too great for words. I attended the 10-12 session and I met some fabulous people and got to share my tribute song "TO JOHN" there and also some of my poetry and the poetry everyone else recited was fantastic! WHAT A wonderful time that was! The singing at the Assisted Living Center was the highlight of the trip for me, and I heard it was for some others too. The residents just loved the concert we put on for them and afterward we were invited to stay for pizza. There were about thirteen of us that went and let me tell ya, everyone sang like angels, and if you have never heard Paul Creason sing, you must...he is wonderful! The Wheeler concert was absolutely the best thing ever because I got to sit next to Maria and Steve and we were in the third row center. Afterwards, meeting all the band members and Mollie...who as everyone knows is beautiful and full of love for the world, was another highlight. The reception was great....and it was great to hear the band there play blues. Sunday, I attended the Snowmass Chapel service and loved it though I was so tired by that time I almost fell asleep during the sermon. It was great hearing Mack Bailey sing during and after the service and I once again had the pleasure of singing "TO JOHN" afterwards in the memorial gardens. I also got to meet Erma and got a picture taken with her and that was totally awesome! Went to the Maroon Bells for a picture with a bunch of my other friends who owned Taylor guitars. We had a group picture taken out there for the Taylor Guitar company. That was another highlight of the trip for me. To be out there in the company of such wonderful friends sharing a beautiful day...the sky was perfect and the temperature was perfect and the lake and the mountains...it was a perfect day. We sang some JD songs and let me tell ya, what a pure joyful day that was!!!! I will never forget it as long as I live! On Friday, I got to see the Mardy Murie Film and that was wonderful. I never knew that much about her and finally got to learn about how much she did for Alaska....how romantic her relationship with her hubby was. It was also my first sight of Erma in person and I thought, "Wow...what a gentle, fragile woman she is with such a good heart!" On Sunday I went to the Windstar Open house and how wonderful it was to be there and to gaze out over that beautiful valley. I took my guitar and sang JD songs with a bunch of others and we had a great time! Also got to see the peace Cloth again which was a treat. Saturday, I attended Christine Smith's luncheon (JD CELEBRATION) in Salida. It was wonderful and I sang my heart out. It was very special because she had hired a sound man and a guy to videotape the whole thing.....so the singing was especially fun and everyone sang along. The peace cloth was also at this celebration. The drive back was absolutely breathtaking going up over the pass. There was a moment when Maureen and I were driving back and we were coming around the Twin Lakes (pristine and so sparkly) and Rocky Mtn. High was on the cd at the time and a hawk flew right above our car. That night, we also went to the Rio Grande park to see the sanctuary. I am very impressed with how far they have come and it was absolutely beautiful. My hats off to those who worked and dedicated their time to the sanctuary and especially to the parks dept. for doing such a wonderful and speedy job with it. It was just fantastic! Maria, her mom and I drove home Monday afternoon and that was the end of probably the most wonderful vacation I have ever had in my life. Love and blessings, Melanie (MEL) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jennifer Moore Our fall was lovely out here in the Roaring Fork Valley - the color was prolonged and there were still a lot of fluttering gold aspen leaves all over the valley. The Aspen side of Independence Pass was still gorgeous and there was a lot of color left up at the Bells, although the trees right at the base were all gone. On Saturday morning (10/8) there was a skiff of ice on the lake when we got there at 8:00am and no wind on the lake making for a mirror reflection. A fresh dusting of snow on the peaks made for some gorgeous photos! Saturday night (10/14) we went to the Tribute concert at the Wheeler which was great. However, I couldn't help remembering the 10/14/97 candlelight vigil in front of the Wheeler. I was working in Vail at that time, didn't leave the office until 5:30pm and had to drive over 100 miles to get up to Aspen to be there. Obviously we got there very late and the crowd had thinned out. As we stood there weeping and holding our candles, and looking at all the candles, flowers, and mementos there on the bricks near the fountain, that gorgeous nearly full moon rose over the top of Aspen Mountain and glowed down upon all of us standing there in the street. It was absolutely magnificent. As we entered the Wheeler on this past Saturday night for the concert the nearly full moon was once again smiling down on us. Nothing happens by accident! ============================================================ The award for the most compact review of the 6 days goes to: ============================================================ Kathy Lill Thought I'd give you a sampling of what all Judy, Linda and I did during the six days we were in Aspen and it will explain why we are all exhausted, yet spiritually renewed! It was wonderful. It was fun, exciting, very emotional and healing. Everyone was so nice. They shared how John touched their lives. Debra Chilton was there and shared about the Peace Cloth. The mayor of Salida, Jaime Lewis was there and talked of John touching his life. Anna Zapp, John's seamstress, was there and told how kind John was to her and her family over the 15 years she designed clothing for John. She was able to start a business because of her work with John. And I was honored to tell what John did for me during the difficult times in my life. We had sing-alongs and were entertained by Christine and Melanie Trondson who plays the guitar. Christine talked of Dreams of Freedom and what it is doing to help many people that society doesn't care about. At this point the song "No One" was sung. There were many times throughout the program when the tears were flowing freely. We ended with a prayer and meditation for John, all holding hands together as one. ====================================== P O E T R Y C O R N E R ====================================== ON MY WAY TO THE MOUNTAINS by John V.
