It has been in existence for 20 years now but apparently does not always publish a newsletter. For information write to: Sunshine On My Shoulders Fuyoko 604, 3-7-11 Azabujuban Minato, Tokyo 106 Japan = = = = = = = = = = = = The other foreign fan clubs are in Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. = = = = = = = = = = = = :-( The "Wings of a Dream" Fan Club is no longer publishing, and has asked other fan clubs not to distribute the address. That means that there are only two U.S. Fan Clubs who distribute newsletters via the mail. They are "Rhymes and Reasons" and "Hearts in Harmony." Let me know if you would like the addresses for any of the clubs. As far as I know, Rocky Mountain High: The JD Internet Fan Club is the only John Denver Club distributing information via the internet. Founded in 1976 by John Denver and Tom Crum, the Windstar Foundation's mission is to inspire individuals to make responsible choices and take direct personal actions to achieve a peaceful and environmentally sustainable future. Scientific Exchange: "Aspen Global Change Institute" provides the most current global environmental information to industry, government and the general public. It also provides an opportunity for more than 100 international Earth and social scientists to meet annually, share information and propose solutions that impact life on the planet. Environmental Curriculum: "Ground Truth Studies" was developed in response to the growing demand for accurate environmental education materials that engage the interest and imaginations of teachers and their students. In cooperation with NASA, they produced curriculum providing an understandable summary of global changes in the immediate areas of participating schools. A supplementary handbook guides teachers through the program and presents dozens of student activities and projects. Wilderness Education for Children: "Earth Summit" is a semi-annual program offering children hands-on environmental education in the rugged wilderness of the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado. 303 Ways to Restore the Earth: "Earthpulse Handbooks" are available to the general public and offer a wealth of information, ideas and resources on specific environmental topics. These three books each contain 101 ways to restore the Earth. Subjects include chemicals, energy and recycling. Windstar Newsletter: "Windstar Vision", a seasonal newsletter, keeps members in touch with Foundation projects, challenges and accomplishments. Regional Eco Action Groups: "Windstar Connections" groups encourage personal action and responsibility. This world-wide grassroots outreach program strives to keep members "connected" with the Foundation and offers leadership, training, resources and support to implement action at a community level. This is an outstanding way to solve problems on a local level. Windstar "Choices for the Future Symposium": This annual international gathering of government leaders, environmentalists, educators, innovators and involved citizens educates, inspires and challenges. Presenters have included Ted Turner, Ben Cohen, Kenny Loggins, Whoopie Goldberg, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Ram Daas, and of course, Windstar co-founders John Denver and Tom Crum. The event is held in Aspen, Colorado. Windstar Awards: Each year, Windstar presents the "Windstar" and "Windstar Youth Award" to two outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to peace, understanding and the sustainability of our planet. Past recipients have included Jacques Cousteau, David Brower, Wangari Maathai, and Marian Wright Endelman. On the Internet: There is a Windstar Foundation mailing list here on the internet for Windstar members to keep in touch with each other. Email emilyparris@delphi.com for more information. THE COUSTEAU SOCIETY About the Cousteau Society The Cousteau Society is a non-profit, membership supported organization dedicated to the protection and improvement of the quality of life for present and future generations. Founded in 1973 by Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his son Jean-Michel Cousteau, the Society now has 300,000 members worldwide. The Society believes that only an informed and alerted public can best make the decisions necessary to protect and manage the world's natural resources. The Cousteau teams have explored the water system throughout the world for over forty years. Their unique explorations and observations have been documented in over forty books, eight sets of filmstrips, four feature films and more than one hundred television documentary films which have helped millions of people to better understand and appreciate the fragility of life on our Water Planet. Currently, in the nine year "Rediscovery of the World" series produced for global television distribution, the two research vessels, CALYPSO and ALCYONE are circumnavigating the earth. The Society produces four hours of television each year. Films to date have included studies of Haiti, Cuba, The Marquesas Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, the Andaman Islands, Borneo and Indonesia among others. The Society's commitment to education is further demonstrated through its publications, CALYPSO LOG for adults and its award winning children's magazine, DOLPHIN LOG. It organizes lectures throughout the US and abroad and publishes articles and columns in various periodicals for distribution throughout the world. Its scientific research has involved a wide spectrum of activities. Beginning with the co-invention of the Aqualung, Cousteau teams have led in the development of underwater technology with systems ranging from underwater habitats to submarines and imaging systems. Cousteau engineering teams developed the windship, Alcyone, and its unique wind-propulsion system of Turbosail (TM) cylinders. Through cooperation with independent scientists, expedition research includes projects which range from measuring the contribution of nutrients in rivers to the global ocean system, to developing new methods to measure primary production in the sea, to using new resource management techniques to assess the sustainability of development projects. The Society speaks in testimony and counsel to governing bodies and leaders on issues of global concern and extends its support to other environmental protection efforts, such as the Marine Mammal Stranding network. In 1990, The Cousteau Society launched a petition drive to protect Antarctica, the last vast pristine expanse on Earth, as a natural reserve dedicated to peace and science and was at the forefront of efforts which culminated in the international protocol which guarantees the prohibition of mineral activities for at least fifty years and implements a number of environmental protection measures. In keeping with its commitment to future generations, the Society is working towards having the United Nations adopt a "Bill of Rights for Future Generations." A global petition was launched in May, 1991 and, to date, has generated over four million signatures. Parris It was a crisp October Night With a full moon in the sky My love and I were taking a walk While a cool breeze whistled by Dry leaves crunched beneath our feet And whirled about in the air The spooky feeling of Halloween Was around us everywhere Over on Mrs. Kilenney's porch A Jack-O-Lantern glowed With cut out face and toothy grin An eerie face it showed A dog in the yard beside us Barked with a devilish glee And the spooky hoot of an owl Sounded very close to me It was the sort of autumn night When evil creatures roam And I was just about ready to say That we should be heading for home When from over in the shadows I saw the bushes shake And an eerie sound broke the silence Causing my shoulders to quake I started to turn and run away When a black cat scampered by And from out of the spooky shadows There came a ghastly cry I feared it might be a monster A witch, or a devil in red A xombie, or vampire descending And I wished I were home in my bed But out of the gloomy shadows Came a little witch dressed in black And she went on her way quite happily When I put a treat in her sack * * * * * * * * For more information on John Denver call the Rocky Mountain High BBS (816) 753-2477 ================================= END OF FILE email: emily@sky.net Rocky Mountain High: The John Denver Internet Fan Club OCTOBER NEWSLETTER #6 =================================
