It was awesome. I got caught in a traffic jam on the way, due to a nasty accident on the freeway. As I sat in the lane, I said a little prayer for those involved in the accident. I wasn't sure exactly where I was going, but, after one wrong turn, I parked my car and made my way to the Commons and the front door to the Rose Garden. I showed my ticket, walked in and had absolutely no problem finding my seat. The people who sat beside me shared their binoculars with me and, as usual the atmosphere was relaxed, calm and friendly. This is the second time I've been to a JD concert by myself. This time was to a place I'd never been before, and it had been about 10 years since I'd been to one. But, when the lights went down and he started to sing, it was like coming home. It was like being in the middle of friends, even though I didn't know a single soul. I always feel safe to not keep looking over my shoulder when I'm walking to my car after a JD concert. And traffic clears away easily, smoothly and quickly because people are polite and friendly at the end of a concert. The one different thing that I noticed at this concert was a "signer." There was someone signing to people who are hearing impaired at the concert. Even when the beauty of the music can't be "heard," the people come to "hear" the words. He truly touches everyone with his music and words. -- Linda Vancouver, WA -------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kaye Rains Subject: JD Concert! Portland, Oregon - Rose Garden 9/15/96 ====================================== Well, the John Denver Concert at the Rose Garden last night was fantastic! He began singing at 7:30 with "The Eagle and The Hawk". After missing a couple of high notes, he said, "I should know better than to start off with that one!" He warmed up quickly, and continued with "Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio", after which he told us the story behind that song, and how it offended the ladies of that fair city. He seemed delighted when he was going to teach us the words to "Dreamland Express", and we already knew them! Of course, "Today" moved me to tears again (lots of memories in that one), but he sang it beautifully. I think he surprised a few people with "When I'm Sixty-Four", but they don't remember that it was on one of his early albums (I remembered!). "Back Home Again", "I Want To Live" (dedicated to hungry children of the world), "Get Your Tongue Out Of My Mouth...", "Me and My Uncle", "Calypso", "Amazon", and "Eagles and Horses" followed. The crowd favorites were "Rocky Mountain High" and "Annie's Song". There were more than a few people with tears running down their faces, including me. He sang "Rocky Mtn. Suite/Cold Nights in Canada", which I think few people have heard in concert. His first encore was with the band to play "Foxfire Suite". Then the band left the stage, and JD told us how he was recently inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (it's about time!), and that he had us to thank for that. He explained that he felt humbled and privileged to sing for us, and that he always carried us in his heart. He said "Man, I'm getting too old for this!", and began his final song, "Perhaps Love", which he lovingly dedicated to us. I felt, as always, that I was the privileged one to have once again shared space with John Denver. At 10:00, the audience peacefully departed, taking with them, I hope, some of the love and caring that JD gave to us all. He appeared a bit tired, but as always gave us exactly what we have come to expect from him: a little bit of himself to take with us into the dark and rainy night. peace.... Kaye Rains ------------------------------------------------------------ From: Jennifer Packard Jackson Hole, Wyoming - 9/20/96 =============================== I attended the Friday September 20 concert (1 of 2) in Jackson Hole WY. I drove for 5 hours and arrived about 20 minutes before the concert began, but boy was it worth it! (I knew it would be) I have always seen John outdoors--in the mountains--at Park City, UT and was slightly hesitant at the prospect of being in a small indoor theater (seating about 700). There was no cause for worry...the sound was tremendous, the crowd was small enough that even from my seat in the back center I COULD SEE JOHN...It was more personnel--he showed video scenes during 3-4 of his songs (a beautiful touch). He was alone--no band, which was also nice for a change, although he did use a back up tape for a few songs--which sounded surprisingly great. If I would have known how great this was going to be, I would have bought tickets to both nights! Great concert...as usual, an extremely uplifting experience. -------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bob Erwin From The Rocky Mountain High Of The Dallas Majestic Theater Majestic Theater - Dallas, TX 9/25/96 ===================================== This evening, Dallas' old Majestic Theater hosted John Denver's best performance ever to a Dallas/Fort Worth audience. A majestic blend of Denver's old and new was complemented by tunes near and dear to the heart of a Texan..."San Antonio Rose" and "El Paso". Bob Wills and Marty Robins would have been proud. My wife Jackie and I have never missed a John Denver concert in Dallas or Fort Worth. We have witnessed every performance since the seventies. From the huge arenas to the lawn concerts with the Dallas Symphony in the past, never has his voice or instrumentals sounded better than they did this evening. The band was great, especially the keyboard and percussion work. The only back-up missing was a female voice. I think most agree we've come to expect a light and airy female voice with JD. Remember Olivia Newton John and Emmy Lou Harris? He's past the fifty mark. John's voice is better than ever. I think the "pipes" are stronger! There's a richer, mellower tone to his ballads and love songs. There's more power to the songs like "Calypso". Plus there was a noticeable pause for inflection not found in recordings or past performances of the more tender songs. Some notes were held for a looooooong time! Would he ever come up for air? The evening was without political or environmental commentary. As always his sermons were in his songs. The audience sang to John and each other on several tunes. Denver has always connected with his audience, tonight was no exception. There was a short intermission, a change of shirts and before we knew it, two and one half hours had passed. No one in my party was ready for the evening to be over. His concerts are always warm and friendly bringing out the best of us. The songs of earth and sky, lover and friend, indian and cowboy, uncles, aunts and family keep us in touch with ourselves, our heritage and our responsibilities. I've had the opportunity to meet John on one occasion. He has richly blessed our lives and we wish him the very best in his public and private life. I hope I have the chance to shake his hand again. South Texas...you're in for a treat! Bob Erwin Arlington, Texas PS: Where were the souvenir programs? That was a disappointment. It's a tradition that we affix the ticket stub to the latest concert program. There were no programs! -------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jennifer Wurl Majestic Theater - San Antonio, Texas 9/27/96 ============================================= The setting, The Majestic Theatre in down town San Antonio, Texas. Let me start out by saying that the Majestic Theatre is one of the most beautiful old opera houses I have been to (Other than The Grand in Galveston, TX -- Hey John, How about playing Galveston sometime?!? We'd love to see you again!) Anyway, the concert started promptly at 8:00 with the house lights dimming into total darkness. A light shines forth and out from left stage came none other than John Denver. He opened the evening with "The Eagle and The Hawk" and led that into "Take Me Home Country Roads" and "Back Home Again." He then played an all time favorite of mine - "Today." This was followed by "Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio". After singing this song, John went on to tell us of an incident when he performed this particular song on The Tonight Show. He received a phone call from the mayor of Toledo, inviting him to visit their grand city. When John arrived at the Toledo airport, he was greeted with a red carpet arrival and given the key to the city. He was also given a grand tour of Toledo. Finally the mayor approached John telling him that Toledo already had a song, and they found it much more fitting. It was then played. John's reply to this song was "I think I like my song better!" It was really great to see John laugh. This story caused him to start to chuckle, then laugh. I thought that was great! "Seasons of the Heart", "For Baby (For Bobbie)", "I Want To Live", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "When I'm 64", "Dreamland Express", "I'm Sorry", "For You", "Get Your Tongue Out Of My Mouth" and "Amazon" finished out his first set. Then he took a brief 15 minute break to change shirts and freshen up. When he came back, he introduced the band. "Hey Guys, you were great!!!" came back, he introduced the band. Hey Guys, you were great!!! John livened up the Texas audience by appealing to their love of this great state. He sang "Home on the Range" followed by "Ponies" and then "Me and My Uncle", "Eagles and Horses", "El Paso", and "San Antonio Rose." It was ironic since we were only minutes from the Alamo! "Wild Montana Skies" rang out followed by "Darcy Farrow", "Whispering Jesse", Annie's Song" and then the first notes of "Calypso." I was saddened to hear these notes for I knew that it signified the ending of a beautiful night. He finished "Calypso" and said good night....but the ovation he received!!! He and his band came back and treated us to the "Foxfire Suite." The band left the stage, leaving John Denver alone on stage with a guitar in his arms, and an audience who truly loves him spread out before him. He said that we were "Too Kind" and then proceeded to sing "Perhaps Love." I don't know, maybe it was the acoustics, maybe it is the love that we all have for his music, maybe it was the moon high up above, I don't know, but I do know this, the San Antonio Concert was one of the best performances I have been a pleasure to witness and I thoroughly loved each and every moment of it. This night was the first concert I was able to share with my 12 year old son and my husband. It was great to see my son singing along with the songs that he has grown up on. My husband even said he was surprised, he's not the fan that I am but had to admit that JD puts on a fabulous concert. He even said he'd go again if the opportunity comes up!!! I don't know if John ever reads the Newsletter or the posts in this fan club but this is for you John: "Thank you for your music, thank you for your songs, thank you the talent you possess and above all, thank you for sharing it with us. We love you." God Bless and Peace to You All, Jennifer Wurl, Houston, TX ----------------------------------------------------------- From: Charles Jeffreys, Jr. M.D. Subject: ROCKY MTN HIGH DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS Majestic Theater - San Antonio, Texas 9/27/96 ============================================= It has been my pleasure to see John perform at least 12 times since my wife and I first saw him on our first date in 1973. He was fantastic and magical as ever. He received a standing ovation when he first walked on stage and immediately said, "Boy, how do I live up to that?" Believe me, he did. He played for 2 1/2 hours with only a 15 minute intermission to change his shirt. The Majestic Theater in San Antonio was packed with a sellout crowd. The last time we saw John here was at his Seaworld Concert in 1993 which his original band - Glen Hardin, Jim Burton, and Jim Horn. I brought my two oldest sons, 6 & 8, and they both loved every minute of it. They recognized his songs because Mom and Dad play them quite often. We hope to raise our children to appreciate John's music, not just for the art but for the message he brings. -------------------------------------------------------------- ============================================== Walt Disney World 25th Anniversary Press Event ============================================== John Denver attended the Walt Disney World 25th Anniversary Press Event in Florida that ran from September 29th to October 2nd in Florida. He put his hands in cement at the Chinese Theatre at Disney MGM Studios in Florida. He also was there for a one-hour conversation at the new Disney Institute and appeared in a special parade at the studio. The following are some descriptions of the events: ----------------------- From: DISNEYBOB@aol.com Well John's handprint today was extraordinary. I have done many and it was very special and witnessed by a thousand plus guests. John was in a terrific mood. Jesse Belle was here also. John rode with Jesse Belle three blocks through hundreds of fans to the Chinese Theater at the Disney-MGM Studios. There an MC introduced John and spoke about the legend that he is. John did put his hands in cement, and he tried to get Jesse to join him but she was too shy. The band paraded John to and from the theater (with Mickey Mouse is the car too of course) and John had "the time of his life", (so he said after the event concluded). We got some great video and stills. John saw thousands of fans today! It was a great day for him. He was his usual very humble self also. What a first class humanitarian and human being. Bob Radock at Walt Disney World -------------------------------------------------------------- From: MR CHARLES M WHITE Subject: Denver Does Disney 9/29/96 John meets Mickey... Our journey started with an e-mail flash bulletin from Emily Parris on our computer... It said "John Denver will put his hands in cement at 2 PM on Sept. 29 in front of the Chinese Theater at Disney MGM Studios as part of the Disney World 25th Anniversary Celebration." We were off the next morning...... --------------- When we got to MGM, we were early and took some time to look around, as we had never been in that part of the park before. We didn't take in much of the entertainment because we were there for a specific reason... to cover John's induction into the Disney World Family of Stars. Barb staked out a good place to take pictures and held it for a couple of hours while I brought her food and wandered about some. As it got close to the time, a crew began to set up things for the ceremony. Soon the announcement came over the PA. "Ladies and gentlemen, world famous recording artist and actor... John Denver!" John was in a motorcade preceded by a marching band, and accompanied by none other than Mickey Mouse himself! He waved at cheering multitudes while holding daughter Jesse Belle's hand. When the car stopped, he walked up the red carpet to waiting cement in a mold on a table and, after a brief talk with the MC, placed his hands in it and signed it. He tried to get Jesse Belle to put her hands in, but she refused, causing laughter from the audience. They got back in the motorcade and left, marching band, Mickey Mouse and all; laughing all the way. What a great scene it was... John just loved it; you could tell by the way he laughed... 10/1/96 John's One Hour Conversation.... Well... I'll tell you... I've been to a lot of John Denver concerts over the years. Some were really big, some modest in size. I've also been to three Choices Symposia, and observed some of John's other great communication skills and charisma; but I've never seen him the way I saw him at the Disney Institute in Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida! He was unrehearsed, unplugged, open, candid, and simply wonderful!!! He spoke, played music, told jokes, recited poetry, and just plain entertained everybody in the place. He, casually, came walking on stage (to audience applause) and, after opening with the cowboy classic, "Home on the Range", started by saying that he'd never done anything quite like this before, and hadn't prepared a speech or any notes, but he thought he'd just play it by ear and see what happened... What happened was magic, pure Denver magic. He played his short song, "The Music is You" which defined the mood perfectly... then he went on to say how music comes as a spontaneous thing which just, sort of, comes to him out of thin air. He went on to talk of his writing style, and his philosophy of life. He would add a song or two, and ask the audience if there were any questions or comments. One woman asked him to play "The Gift You Are" at which time he pointed at his daughter, Jesse Belle, in the audience and said..."I wrote this song for that little girl right there!" He forgot some of the words and laughed along with the rest of us at his mistake, asking, "Quick, tell me, what's the next line?" He recited "The Ambulance in the Valley", then someone asked him to play "Annie"s Song" and he made us sing along with him... It was a wonderful experience, indeed, with a small audience of about 150 people. It was warm and personal and the only things missing were the campfire and the Rocky Mountains. It was another side of this multi-faceted entertainer whom I have come to admire so much over the years... Peace--Charlie -------------------------------------------------------------- From: Judy Gracey Subject: Re: Conversation with John Denver I was fortunate enough to have been in the front row at the conversation with John Denver at the Disney Institute in Orlando. John interspersed a few songs with his talking about the environment, inspirations and humorous anecdotes. He also fielded several comments/questions from the audience. The venue was warm and lent itself well to this kind of a forum. Did I mention that he received a standing ovation for his efforts? We ALL had a really far out experience. Judy Gracey ------------------------------------------------------------- ===================== JOHN DENVER STORIES ===================== From: "Karen A. St.Clair" F*R*I*E*N*D*S Through the generations....... In 1980, My Junior year in high school, I sat in an algebra class without a friend in the world. On the first day of school, there happened to be a boy that sat behind me that seemed to know everyone in the room but me. He was very outgoing and friendly. He even spoke to me and I didn't quite know what to think about that. He started humming a John Denver song about a week into the class and I knew then that I had found someone like me. Mark and I became quite the "Groupies", and quite good friends. We waited in long lines to see the JD concert that came to our town and collected anything that mentioned John as a possible guest. Somehow as time went on, we met new friends and conflict between us appeared. Who knows what the conflict was, it was high school after all. I just knew that I missed my friend dearly and the music that we had once shared with joy became the notes of sadness and longing for the friend that I would never replace. Things smoothed over, over the years when Mark and I had found that we had a college political science class together. We sat together and still had interests in John's music and always discussed his latest works with excitement. The next semester, I got married, and Mark came to the wedding and kissed my cheek in the receiving line. We would see each other on campus after that once in a while and in 1987 we graduated from college and sat side by side in the very room that we had so many years ago seen our first John Denver Concert in. No one else knew just how important that room was to us, someplace where no one else had experienced the magic that we felt when John Denver had walked by us there so many years ago and now this place was making history for us once again. Most would think that was the perfect ending to a friendship, but not for Mark and I, I think that we found something in each other that no one could replace, the kindred spirit that flows through the notes in John's music that so few understand. Mark lives in D.C. now and I'm still in the middle of the states, in Missouri. We still talk on the phone once in a while and Mark always sends a Christmas Video of his beautiful wife, and 2 daughters each year. In the few calls that we make, we always ask if the other has seen John's latest work or concerts. My daughter knows a lot of John's music as I'm sure Mark's girls do too. It just goes to show you that John's music has made many friends through the generations. John and Mark, you have both given me a gift that has no name, the closest I can come up with is Friendship. I Love You Both, You have meant so much to me, Karen. Springfield, MO -------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Laura J. Gardner" I grew up listening to John, and absolutely love him. My earliest memories of him are from when I was maybe five years old. (I am now 30). I remember being in a hospital in '72, no one could calm me down, and my mother was not allowed to stay with me. She snuck in an 8 track cassette player, and earphones. The nurses could not believe the difference in me. A small child in pain, drugs not helping, and John Denver's Rocky Mountain High had me completely soothed. The doctor then prescribed John Denver for everyone in the children's ward. Wonderful memory. I remember making my dad play every John Denver 8 track we had, torturing the man beyond belief. His idea of music at the time was either Eddy Arnold, or classical things you need no pulse to enjoy! My father was not a demonstrative man, but he knew my love of John, and I begged him to take me to Aspen (we lived in Chicago). We went the next year, listening to the tapes the whole way (about 1400 miles!) I was very upset, when at the end of two weeks, we had not "run into him". I did not want to come home. My father started pulling over POLICE! Asking them how to get to John Denvers house! I was mortified. I was old enough to know that this was just plain silly. What I did not recognize (until I received my brains at 25) was my fathers love for me. By embarrassing himself asking for these directions. You should have seen some of the looks he received from the police. He also stopped your average man in the streets, grocery stores, etc......... May sound silly to you, but this is one of my best memories of my father, Thank you, John....... Then I hit that wonderful age, where peer pressure had me saying I liked Rock n Roll groups, NOT that country style garbage. NEVER, never did I denounce my John, though. I would actually get some of the other kids to admit "Heck of a guitarist" if nothing else. I was very lucky to find a husband that shares my enthusiasm. I tested him subtly, by announcing the ONLY wedding song I would accept was "Follow Me". He immediately agreed! My husband is 4 years older than me, and had been chasing me and waiting for me, so the song was written for us. He had moved to Colorado (drawn by much of the music!), and when things got rough for me in Chicago, he drove out to get me. We were married less than 3 months later... We drove out, listening to old 8 tracks the whole way We live in a small town in Colorado - Woodland Park. My husband and I own a maintenance company. His dream is to someday, somehow get a call from John Denver that his toilet is backed up (hey, working class people have working class dreams, right?) and he must go to his home to fix it. We live not too far away from him, and my husband has quite a name for himself as being honest and ethical. He has done work for a number of celebrities in the area, so we can only hope that John someday calls! We are raising our kids right, too. We have an almost 5 year old, Jeremy, who watches the Wildlife concert and can not take his eyes off of it. He was inspired to get a guitar. We have encouraged that interest as much as possible. Jeremy seems to think we are related, and keeps asking if we can go see him! Our daughter, Emily, (nice name, by the way!) loves him also, and would rather see him sing than Mr Rogers. Not exactly a great review, but consider the source and its incredible! His music has put meaning into every step of my life. I had many miscarriages in an attempt to have my children. The year we were finally successful, the songs "The Gift You Are" , "Ancient Rhymes" and "I watch you sleeping" came out. HOW DID HE KNOW?????? Such perfect timing! There are days when the kids are running wild, this pregnancy gets hard to bear, and life is just oh so tiresome. I put on John Denver, and all is right. The kids hush up and listen to him, I relax, and everything falls into place. He is magic, and I only wish I could tell him that! Laura ----------------------------------------------------------------- =========================== A CLOSE CALL IN ASPEN =========================== Aspen Times October 5, 1996 Starwood fire LONGTIME LOCAL RESIDENT'S HOME MOSTLY DESTROYED A longtime local resident's Starwood home exploded into flames Wednesday evening, injuring no one but demolishing half the home within half an hour before Aspen Fire Department volunteers had the blaze under control. The home, estimated by one firefighter to be around 1,800 square feet, belongs to Jessie Morss, according to a neighbor, Terry Badger, who called local authorities at right around 6 p.m. to alert them to the fire. Although the home is surrounded by brush, firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the structure itself, preventing it from spreading to singer-songwriter John Denver's house next door. There was no indication of how the fire started, according to Fire Chief Daryl Grob. Grob also indicated that Morss was not home at the time of the fire, noting that firefighters had completed a search of the scene within 15 minutes before giving the "all clear" sign that there were no residents to be found. Badger said there were numerous lightning strikes near his home as a squall line proceeded up the Roaring Fork Valley at about 5 p.m. ______________________________________________________________ ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= From: Ann Schnitz -------------------------------------------- I heard that John is planning to live on the West Coast for about a year, and not really spend much time in Aspen.
