Council once feared stampede, is not as worried these days. by Melissa Hecksher, "Herald" Staff Writer It's been almost 2 years since John Denver's plane plunged into the ocean off Pacific Grove. Now, not too far from his watery grave, a local activist plans to construct a memorial so Denver fans have a place to make their flower-filled pilgrimages. "Millions of people were inspired by him" said Pacific Grove resident Helaine Clark in a letter to the City Council. "On the anniversary of his fatal accident, they arrive to do a tribute, and it would be very comforting for them to have a rock marking his ocean grave where they can place their flowers and notes." Clark was given preliminary approval to put a small bronze plaque on the shoreline near where Denver's plane crashed on October 12, 1997. "I am not asking for a marker for someone who died somewhere else" said Clark, "Major parts of John Denver's physical being were left behind in our ocean and have become part of its ecosystem. This is his grave site." Until now, the council had been reluctant to construct a memorial for Denver for fear that it would attract crowds and disrupt the quiet residential neighborhood at Asilomar said City Manager Mike Huse. "We weren't sure how many people would be coming to Pacific Grove as a result of this tragedy" said Huse, who will oversee the project along with Pacific Grove Mayor Sandy Koffman and Councilman Jim Costello. "It was a wild scene down there with large numbers of tv trucks and people driving by" he said. The council thought (a memorial) was something that would attract people and would have an impact on the shoreline, the neighborhood and the streets." But when Clark proposed the idea Tuesday, the council voted in favor of the plaque. "It's been two years and it hasn't resulted in what was feared" Huse said. "We want to put something down there that is subtle yet marks the area and reminds people how Denver made his mark on humanity." The plaque, proposed to be about 14 by 14 inches, will be set into an existing boulder at the car turnout on Ocean View Blvd. between Acropolis Ave. and Asilomar Blvd., the closest on-shore spot to where the plane crashed. Denver's family - his mother, 3 children, brother, and two ex-wives will pay for and determine the wording of the plaque. Clark hopes it will say something like this: "John Denver (Henry John Deutschendorf) 1943-1997 Loving son, father, brother, husband, friend and inspiration. "When I die I want to come back as an eagle." John spoke these words to express his love for flying. He was a world-renowned humanitarian, environmentalist, folk singer and composer. His music stirred our emotions and awareness. His experimental aircraft went down in the ocean off this beach on October 12, 1997. He became part of the ocean which he loved." There may also be an eagle engraved on the plaque, Clark said. The California Friends of John Denver, based in Huntington Beach agreed to fund any cleanup of notes and flowers around the memorial. Denver was most popular in the early 1970's as a writer and singer of folk/pop tunes, including "Rocky Mountain High" and "Thank God I'm A Country Boy." He was also a humanitarian who worked with organizations such as UNICEF, the National Wildlife Foundation and The Cousteau Society. He received the "World Without Hunger" award from President Reagan and the Albert Schweitzer Music Award in 1993 for a life's work dedicated to music and humanity." * * * Events in Pacific Grove, CA: http://hometown.aol.com//pixiedmyr/myhomepage/business.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ================================================ Review: "The Never Ending Song" - Morris Walker by Emily M. Parris ================================================ Earthwalker Entertainment has been producing a concert series called "The Never Ending Song, a Tribute to John Denver." Lynn Walker reports that "the auditoriums are filled with people who sing along on every song and it is a kind of a healing for some." "We love producing them" she said. Lynn and Morris sent me a cd of the song that he wrote on the night John Denver died. The close harmony and pleasing melody are sure to please JD fans. The song is relaxing and easy-going and the words show how much John Denver is missed by them. A cd single of the song is available. (See the want ads or write to Lynn and Morris at the above email.) THE NEVER ENDING SONG A Tribute to John Denver by Morris W. Walker Rocky Mountain High and Country Roads that I've been down Gave me a smile, took away my frown Just the thought of these songs gone by All the tunes that made you cry Seem to speak to me Always set me free CHORUS Goodbye my friend I'm sad it had to end Your songs will life forevermore And if goodbye seems wrong we'll just say so long And thank you for the Never Ending Song. Leaving on a Jet Plane or to say Good bye Again We'll think of years of hope In the message you would send Just a Simple Country Boy with Poems, Prayers and Promises Right from the start, words and music from the heart Repeat CHORUS May the Sunshine on your Shoulder Rhymes and Reasons see you through You came around to lighten us And for that we all owe you There was truth in every rhyme And we felt it every time A poet comes along And leaves a Never Ending Song Repeat CHORUS (Copyright 1997 by Morris Walker) * * * Sunny Waters Sings at Kansas City John Denver Gathering ======================================================= From: Jan Saturday, the 18th, was the night of our recent Kansas City John Denver Gathering. 15 people attended. They include: Cookie Agne, Linda Bedell, Charles Bennett, Jim Fettgather, Ken Follett, Vickie Hersh, Moe Moeness, Emily Parris, Roger Speakman, Julie Tzinberg, Sunny Waters, Peggy Welkner, Tina and Damin Welton, and myself. Two people came from Omaha and one from St. Louis. Sunny Waters was wonderful, as always. He has such a rich quality to his voice and you just don't want him to ever quit singing. He even treated us to a few of his own songs. Those songs of his are just amazing. If you have not heard Sunny perform, then you have definitely missed out on something special. Ken Follett brought two Native American Flutes and performed a few songs on them. They were beautiful, relaxing, and very haunting at times. Tina Welton's hubby, Damin, brought his guitars and accompanied Sunny on a lot of the songs. We even convinced Damin to do a solo of Perhaps Love. He agreed to an instrumental only. We provided the voices. It was amazing how comfortable the entire evening felt. It was as if we had known each other forever. It was so easy and so very much fun! We hugged, laughed, talked, sang, laughed, played ping pong, ate, sang, talked, laughed, and hugged. Oh yes, don't forget about the margaritas! It started at 5 p.m., then around 11 p.m. some people needed to head home. By 2 a.m. the clock made people feel guilty (I knew that I should have hidden that clock!) and too soon it was over. I want to thank everyone that attended for giving me memories of love and laughter in my home that I will treasure forever! ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= Emily :-( S-o-r-r-y Correction: In the September 1999 issue of RMH I erroneously stated that David Brower wrote "Garden Song." I wrote a daily for that song. I translate it into English now. I can't express my thought in English as well as in Chinese, but I email it to you, hope to share my happiness with some friends. SUNSHINE Out of window, there are blue skies and beautiful sunshine, breeze is swaying me, I'm immersed in this gentle atmosphere. Laying on sofa, close my eyes, the heart begins flying free, let me forget anything besides happiness. "Sunshine on My Shoulders" is singing, as if John Denver is by my side. I know John Denver because of his "Country Roads." That song is just like a fresh wind from nature, it blows inside me. I sang it time and time again when I was a student, but after these years I heard more songs of him and "Sunshine on My Shoulders" became my favorite. I don't know why, just because every time when I hear this song there really have so much sunshine in my heart, make me warm and happy, even if I am so lonely or tired, I smile yet. This is a simple love, however it's great at the same time. I can't promise giving you money or treasure, I only give you a day, a song, a tale or a wish, if you can understand the lovely sunshine, you'll own the most valuable feeling. How sincere it is. I have to admit I hunger for, if I can hold it, what a wonderful life I'll enjoy. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Here is what John said about his song: "SINGING SKIES AND DANCING WATERS:" "Started off as a love song not only to Annie, not only to my children and an expression of my faith in my father in heaven and my earthly mother, but a love song for all people. I've gone through periods of knowing and not knowing, being up and being down, but if I just take the time to look a little bit past the problem facing me, I see the absolute joy and celebration that I find in every aspect of life. I see skies that sing to me and sunlight dancing on water and children's faces full of laughter. I see you in that. This song is an expression of that love and that fulfillment which is always totally available to everyone." ......John Denver [From...http://austin1.com/JD/David/Song/meaning.htm] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - =================================================== JOHN DENVER W A N T A D S / F O R S A L E =================================================== A CD of "The Never Ending Song" is available for $10.00 (US S&H included).
