Patty Peavey, also known as "Columbine", passed away early this morning in her sleep of a heart attack. Her husband, Robin, says Patty was complaining of heartburn and she woke up at 5:00am only to pass away a short time later in her sleep. They were in their recreational vehicle near Maroon Lake. Patty was 53. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Another John Denver friend, Carol Smith (also known as "Meow") passed away late last week from cancer. She was at home in Oklahoma. <<<<<<<<< E V E N T R E V I E W S >>>>>>>>> 10/12/00 ASPEN, Colo. (Associated Press) - John Denver fans gathered on the third anniversary of his death to help create a garden dedicated to his memory. About 40 people gathered Thursday at the John Denver Sanctuary to garden and swap stories about the hometown singer many considered a friend. "It was like a loss in the family when he died," said Cindy Dougherty, who came to Aspen from Idaho for the occasion. Denver was killed Oct. 12, 1997, when his home-built Long E-Z airplane plunged into Monterey Bay on the California coast. Work on the memorial began last spring. "I think he is standing up there smiling," Dougherty said. "To have this done in his memory is far out." <<<<<<<<<< o o o >>>>>>>>>>> WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 6, 7, 8TH - Pacific Grove, CA ================================================ Debra Sanderson Friends, It was an amazing weekend in Pacific Grove, remembering John, helping continue his legacy of working for the environment, and especially celebrating his legacy of music! First - many thanks to all who participated in all the events, starting with Father Joe's concert Friday in Menlo Park, and then the Tribute Concert on Saturday - Kerry Zallar was the best emcee we could have imagined for the show, Steve & Connie did a great job with their numbers, Father Joe was fantastic, and what can we say about Jim & Anne Curry & Friends but....More! We Want More! They were great. On Sunday, Leslie Newman brought 150 feet of the One World Peace Cloth to the park for people to see, and it is an amazing achievement. I understand the rest of it is in Aspen, and everyone going to those events is in for an incredible experience with the viewing of the cloth. Many thanks to Leslie, and to Jaime and Carolee Goldberg, for making this project their concern, and seeing to it that all of us in Pacific Grove could be a part of something unique. There was the beach cleanup, more singing in the park, another great performance by Jim Curry, and then a very quiet vigil at John Denver Beach. We all had another chance to view the Peace Cloth there at the Beach, before and during the vigil, and to see the cloth with the sea and sky as a backdrop was amazing. There was another Long EZ flyby this year, thanks to 3 terrific pilots! Many, many thanks to John, Jay and Ned for contributing so much to the event. And, what was even better, 2 JD fans were up there with the pilots - they won rides in the Long EZs at the raffle/auction during the concert intermission. We're working on the math to figure out how much was raised for the Windstar Land Conservancy, Friends of the Sea Otter and Friends of the Monarchs and it's looking great. We don't have a final figure now, but we're estimating it's around $900.00. So congratulations to all who participated, to everyone who donated their time and talents, and to everyone who held a good wish for the event in their hearts! It was a terrific success, and it's all Thanks To You. * * * Margie Hoff This past weekend was wonderful. We started the weekend out by catching a concert with Father Joe Frazier and Eskaton in Menlo Park, California. Saturday we had a concert with Jim Curry and Friends, with Father Joe making another appearance. Emceeing was Kerry Zellar who entertained us with some really terrific impressions. Sunday we had a beach cleanup and a singalong in Lover's Point Park. At 5:00 the group gathered at John Denver Beach for a candlelight vigil with a tribute flyover by three planes - two Long EZ's and a CoZ. It was extra special because I got offered a ride in the CoZ. Yippee. What a rush! All through the ride I could hear John singing "The Higher We Fly." * * * EVENTS IN ASPEN, COLORADO ========================= Linda Wolverton After returning from Aspen and the glories of the Rocky Mountains, I'm not sure that I have the words yet to comprehend the past 6 days. The loss of Patty Peavey and Carol Smith has dampened the spirits of most of us...yet we know that they are now at rest with John and other loved ones. On Thursday, October 12th, after viewing John's guitar and eating at the Hard Rock Cafe, we ventured down to the JD Sanctuary. We were able to see the Magnificent beauty of the huge stone boulders that were in place. They were part of the generous gift that had been donated by Annie Denver and the others with words to 3 of John's songs engraved beautifully into the stone. These are at least 8 to 10 feet tall and split into two parts. The words are from "Rocky Mountain High", "The Eagle and the Hawk" and "Perhaps Love." The fourth one has the phrase..."I am a song, I live to be sung, I sing with all my heart JOHN DENVER. Singer, composer, father, son, brother, friend 1943-1997." Apparently the plans call for more large boulders similar to these to be placed there with words to other songs that John composed. Flowers were planted near these boulders as well as other trees and shrubs. This was a true place of peace and beauty surrounded by the Roaring Fork River that John loved so much. Thursday evening there were 200 or so people who gathered in one of the campgrounds in the Maroon Bells Park area for a wonderful campfire and song-fest. 'Kermit' pointed the way for us as we discovered the beautiful sight along the Maroon Creek at the foot of those majestic mountains. Hot dogs were grilled over the fire and lots of goodies brought in my everyone. It was wonderful putting faces with names and meeting these wonderful folks from around the world who were together to celebrate and continue the work of John Denver. The highlight of the day on Friday was the first of the Musical Tributes to John Denver...with Vince Gill and Amy Grant. Folks...they were Wonderful! They both related how they had come to know and love John's music as kids, and later to know and love John himself. They sang John's songs, filled with love and emotion, and shared a great deal of how John had taught them to become the musicians/artists that they are today. Everyone loved that show. At 11:00 on Saturday, a fun JD Auction was held by Mary Ledford and Pam Beasley that earned a bunch of money for various charity causes! The room was Overcrowded, and Erma, Uncle Abe, Terri Martell, and other Deutschendorf family members attended and stayed for lunch. The event went extremely well, and Mack Bailey entertained with some great music as well. On Saturday at 1:00pm the JD Sanctuary was dedicated with many Deutschendorf family members in attendance. Uncle Abe celebrated with a lovely prayer to open the brief ceremony. We JD Family members sang (acappella!) "All This Joy," which Ron found very moving, and another song was sung by Uncle Dave and some cousins. Annie thanked everyone for attending, and she stayed only briefly. I was thrilled to be able to speak with her and she hugged me after we chatted. Ron was also very grateful for the many tributes from John's fans/friends, and he stayed for quite some time for picture taking and just chatting in general. The next event on Saturday was the Dinner at the Tower with Michael and Diane Shore. They shared the ownership with John of this restaurant, and they still have the great photographs hanging in the restaurant that John took. These are great pieces of art, too. Diane shared her wonderful picture album and told us the terrific stories that accompanied them! This was a wonderful event, and I am so glad that it was well attended! The food was great and so were the owners. The Wheeler Concert on Saturday felt even more exciting than the night before...we sat just two rows behind Erma, and she clapped and sang and enjoyed the music so much! Tom Crum and Joe Henry attended, and Tom and Kathy Crum sat directly behind us. On Sunday, we arose early to attend the Worship Service at the Snowmass Chapel...this was a beautiful memorial service to the life and works of John Denver. It was announced that a wonderful, full-sized statue had been commissioned to honor John, and would be placed in the Aspen airport. The decision for this project followed the announcement of the Millennium's 50 greatest Coloradans....but it 'forgot' to mention JOHN! So the decision was made to honor John with the help of his friends and family participating! Following the service, a tribute in the Memorial Garden was held where the Colorado Blue Spruce was recognized that 'we family members' contributed to purchase, and the inscription was shown from "The World Family of John Denver." Also, the JD Peace Cloth Shawl was presented to Erma, and she was very touched by all of this. After all of this, lunch was served, and Erma was a delight to visit and chat with! She was very excited and touched by the Peace Cloth, and she said to me to "Be sure to thank EVERYONE for all that they've done for John!" Later that afternoon, Windstar was opened for people to visit. Deb also had the Peace Cloth on display for all to see that beautiful quilt that had brought so many together to honor John's work for peace. Anna Zapp was there to view all of the great work, and her panels were truly a work of art!! She is such a beautiful lady with her own wonderful stories and memories to share. Several of us stayed to participate in the workshop that J.P. McDaniel held, and to visit the John Denver Meadowlands. I can truly see why John loved those lands so much....it is awe-inspiring to be a part of that beauty. The final Wheeler concert was just as delightful as the rest....with a few more JD stories added for 'zest'! On Monday...we were rushed, since I had to leave at 3:30, but we did attend the wonderful picnic that Christine Moon organized for the Sanctuary. John Adams sang for us again, and many of us were saying our good-byes. The three of us visited the Aspen Music Tent, and then took our Main Street Bakery goodies to Maroon Bells for lunch on the "John log" with last minute pictures. The absolute GRANDEUR and MAJESTY of that place has to go into the very soul of all who visit there. I'm sorry we were rushed with that wonderful place, but I know that it will be embedded in my heart forever. I only hope to return there again and to feel that strength and renewal that I experienced. The Mayor of Aspen DID proclaim this as JOHN DENVER WEEK. Mary Ledford had the proclamation and it was read at each Wheeler concert for ALL to hear and know. I only hope that ALL of you can at some time experience this wonderful Celebration Week for John Denver!! * * * ASPEN, CO - Campfire in Aspen 10/12/00 Mark & Julie Australia G'Day everyone. Well, last night we attended the campfire in Aspen. The setting was beautiful, moon shining on Maroon Bells and everyone so friendly. It was a very emotional night but we enjoyed every minute of it and we thank John for bringing us all together. We're heading for the Tapestry in Aspen event now. * * * Gloria 10/16/00 Although I'm tired, I didn't want to go to bed without posting a huge "thank you" to Mary Ledford and Pam Beasley for their efforts in putting on the auction in Aspen on Saturday. The place was packed and the most money raised on an individual item had to be Stu Ramstead's offering of 4 nights at Little Mulchatna. The last time I looked the bid was at $3,000 and Scott Smith of Texas was the top bidder. On a bewildering, unbelievable, and truly sad note, three items were stolen from the auction - a keychain with John's picture in it, a large soft cover 25th anniversary catalog and an Alfie book. It's hard to even try to cope with the thought that someone took these items. Other than that, the auction was a huge success and everyone should congratulate Pam and Mary for all their hard work. ======================================== Pete Huttlinger A Winner in the National Finger-Picking Championship ======================================== Kathy Lill I'm back from the Walnut Valley Music Festival I attended with Great News! Pete Huttlinger WON the national finger-picking championship. I was so proud of him. I missed his first performance in the competition, but was able to talk to him and wish him luck in placing in the finals. The five finalists performed once again and then the top three were chosen and each played again. Pete gave a touching story of how he attended this festival last year and was lucky to be alive to do that. He had heart surgery just prior to the competition and won second place last year. He told us his mother died 7 weeks ago and he performed at her Memorial Service and would like to play the song for us as his tribute to her! It was a very beautiful gospel song. As I was walking over to the main stage of the festival to catch Danny Wheetman's group (Marley's Ghost), I heard a familiar tune coming from the stage...."Sweet, Sweet Surrender" and the whole audience (10,000 strong) singing along! It was awesome and of course I joined right in! * * * Rex Flottman Pete's recent cd "Naked Pop" has all the songs he played in the contest at the Walnut Valley Festival. I would recommend it to everyone. Anyone wanting more info about the festival or Pete's music can drop me an email or call (316) 221-3250. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ============================================================== The One World John Denver Memorial Peace Cloth was the subject of a television story reaching 3 million homes in New York: ============================================================== Rolland Smith: Some thoughts tonight on an event that took place a week ago at the United Nations. It was the presentation of the World John Denver Memorial Peace Cloth at the UN Millennium Peace Day. This is amateur video of the cloth, row upon row of cloth panels; tributes sent in from all over the world from the friends and fans of John Denver to sew together to make a legacy of peace over 800 feet long. John Denver, poet, singer, song writer, movie star, environmentalist, humanitarian, visionary and peace activist, embraced millions worldwide, not only through his music, but by being the evidence of his beliefs for peace and a sustainable future for all. John's Mother, Erma, donated some of his clothing to sew into the peace cloth. The cloth quilt will continue to grow as a commitment to peace and as a perpetual memorial to John. I had the pleasure of knowing the man and receiving the gift of his friendship. His tragic death in a place accident in 1997 has not diminished his global influence. He lives on in his music and in the inspiration he was to so many. We acknowledge, with action, the resonate truths within us, as John Denver did, then we honor all life and a piece of us lives forever. I'm Rolland Smith. Good Night. ============================================================ ================================= P 0 E T R Y C O R N E R ================================= THROUGH YOUR EYES by Wendy Nelson The world became brand new again Looking through your eyes All colors, shapes, and shadows grew into something Once more worthwhile to recognize. Parris "Trees" was written by Patricia Pasda, Mary Ann Pasda DiEdwardo and J.D. Pasda. There is an introduction written by Michael Thau, the Executive Director of Plant-It 2000, in which he talks a lot about John and the fact that he was a family friend of theirs while he was growing up. There are also many pages devoted to information about Plant-It 2000. The authors are long time supporters of John's message and music and during the week of October 12th each year they conduct lectures on trees. The book has a Step by step guide to drawing trees and explains in detail and with illustrations all the equipment a person would need to begin drawing or painting them. There are instructions on how to draw more than a dozen different kinds of trees. This book contains some very nice illustrations. It is an 8 1/2 x 11" format and is spiral bound. There are also some really beautiful pictures of eagles as well. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to draw or finding out more about Plant-It 2000, an organization which was founded by John Denver.
