Finale Event Deb <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> "John Denver Memorial" by Kyle Dyer 9 News.com 8-22-02 Friends of the late singer and songwriter John Denver plan to memorialize him in Snowmass this October with a specially designed sculpture. John Denver's death will be marked October 13, 2002 by the unveiling of a larger-than-life statue of the musician, which will be placed in a beautiful valley in Snowmass, Colorado. He died October 12, 1997. The statue of Denver is seven-and-a-half feet tall, with an eagle on Denver's arm and a guitar on Denver's back. The Windstar Foundation, which Denver helped found, began planning for the event more than a year ago. The foundation's chairman Dan McCormick told us on 9News Daybreak that he hopes the statue will inspire people to carry on Denver's vision for a better world. "We hope that people will see the statue, and that it will inspire them to get involved, act locally, and keep this area the pristine place that it is," McCormick said. The foundation contacted artist Sue DiCicco to work on the statue. DiCicco, who was also on 9News Daybreak, says she worked on it for almost a year, sometimes as much as 10 hours a day. She says she put in hundreds of hours on the project over the last year. McCormick says the foundation is thankful that DiCicco donated her help. He says that the project would have been "cost-prohibitive" if DiCicco had not volunteered her time to work on the statue. Despite DiCicco's help, McCormick says the sheer size of the statue created a large expense for the Windstar Foundation. The foundation is asking for help in funding the memorial. The foundation will be placing bricks around the statue with the names of donors. ========================= JOHN DENVER EVENT REVIEWS ========================= Review of "Music and Communication's" International Fan Club Weekend - September 7-8, 2002 * Germany by Gabi Kuss The Weekend was great! We had 61 participants from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Italy, England, Hong Kong and the USA. Most of us met on Saturday morning and the meeting ended somewhat on Sunday afternoon. Some of those who had to drive a longer distance arrived already Friday evening. We started on Friday evening with a campfire and since the weather was so good we could stay outside till midnight. On Saturday we send the people on a paperchase and asked them to do sports John liked to do. For example diving...We prepared a box with water, put an apple in it and the people had to get out the apple without using their hands. In the evening we had a lottery with JD items for the benefit of a wild bird care center. The lady who is running that center visited us and brought along with her some information about the wild bird care center, some hedgehogs she is taking care of, too. Of course, there was a lot of music. All these people playing guitars together and singing together is always very special. Sunday morning we watched some videos, again sang together, had another campfire in the sunshine. All in all it was a really wonderful weekend. I really hope more people are able to make friends this way. That's what always happens on our weekends, you meet some strangers and when they leave they are friends. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "When They Were Kids" Over 400 sketches of Famous Childhoods by Carol Orsag Madigan and Ann Ellwood (1998) Random House John Denver Excerpt from page 177... JOHN DENVER (1943-1997), U.S. singer and songwriter A military brat, shuttled from air force base to air force base, he felt "lost in America." When his father was stationed in Tucson, John would ride his bike into the Arizona desert, where he played alone, or he would climb a eucalyptus tree and look down on the rest of the world, feeling removed. In 1957 the family moved to Montgomery, Alabama. When John played guitar and sang for the class at his music teacher's request, his loner status changed somewhat. Other students started to talk to him, and he joined a band. Yet he maintained distance, partly because he abhorred southern racism; he was already a social activist. When the family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, he started to date girls, but it was difficult because he was a year younger than most other kids in his class and too young to drive. Emotionally fragile, when hurt or irritated or depressed John retreated to his room and played guitar. He was still very much a loner throughout high school. In his senior year, when he gave a party to celebrate the publication of the yearbook, not one person came. He was devastated, even though one of his friends did call to say they were at someone's house and invited him to come over. In his autobiography, "Take Me Home," he comments that he would have described himself then "as a dot: round and flat, without edges or depth. That's how I felt and that's what I thought others saw, too. Only my music could redeem me." =========================== "Wolf Woman" by Kim Vickers =========================== Kim Vicker was a devoted John Denver fan who died tragically in February of 2002. According to her publisher, Jared Collard, "her talent for writing began blooming six years ago. She wrote intensively but sporadically between bouts of depression and constant pain from a back injury. She left behind a number of unpublished essays that reflect her philosophy of life, the strength of her character, and the essence of her soul. After Kim's sudden and tragic death, her father decided to publish her writings as a final tribute to her. "Wolf Woman" is the result of his labor of love." Kim left behind her beloved husband, Jon; eighteen year old daughter, Amanda; and a twelve year old son, Colton.
