It is the show that was shown on some PBS stations with interviews with the Trio members and others, and is not the complete concert. However, it will be longer than the PBS video as some additional footage of John Denver and his performance will be added. An October release is planned to coincide with the first anniversary of John Denver's' death. Some footage from the video is being included in a JD Commemorative Show which will be shown on VH-1." I was reading the latest issue of Acoustic Guitar that arrived yesterday -- when, what do my wondering eyes perceive -- a review of "All Aboard", complete with a photo of the front cover of the CD! What follows is what they wrote about the album: (First part of the review talks of several other folk albums for children): ..."Sweetest of all is John Denver's final recording, "All Aboard". The honeyed voice that inspired millions of baby boomers to sing along to "Rocky Mountain High" can be heard bringing warmth and firelight to such classic railroad songs as "I've Been Working On the Railroad", and "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Sante Fe". His pretty version of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans" delivers a double wallop, making both of these musical icons' passings feel even more untimely. The tasteful acoustic arrangements are solidly driven by Denver's straightforward rhythm and fingerstyle guitar, and many tunes are laced with the bluegrass fiddle flourishes of wunderkind Gabe Witcher. We are lucky that John Denver left us with this gentle finale." ============================= Reports on John Denver EVENTS ============================= HEARTS IN HARMONY Event Written on: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 From: Donna Lynne I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came out to the "Hearts In Harmony" dinner/concert Saturday at Doylestown! The small group made it wonderful! I was able to speak with just about everyone :) As usual, Chris & Kevin were terrific! Those two guys just seem to get better and better (together)... "kindred". It was really a pleasure to have "Chip" back out east! = = = = = IT'S ABOUT TIME Event - Hollister, New Hampshire What a wonderful day yesterday at the IAT event in Hollis, NH. It was as beautiful a day as anyone could ask for. The sky was bright blue with puffy white clouds here and there and the grove itself was a bright green. Not too hot but not too cool either. It was fun meeting many computer familiar people in person. I picked out Marcelle immediately thanks to the photo on Rory's page, Friends---there were very few JD songs left unsung yesterday. Michael, and Paul sang soooo many songs (so well I might add). Having Miriam and Marce on backup just added to the joy. A strange happening, but one I have come to expect, was the hawks that flew overhead as Paul was singing. All 3 of the events I have attended where we sang John's music outdoors have been graced by hawks circling overhead. Coincidence? I don't think so!!! It was a wonderful day and one I hope we can do again soon, somewhere in the area. Peace Barbara/Bunny = = = = = = = = = = = = John Denver's legacy inspires a benefit for conservation by Molly McCarthy Nashua Telegraph (NH) Sunshine fell on the shoulders of The Friends of John Denver as they hosted an outdoor benefit Sunday for The Windstar Land Conservancy in Snowmass, Colo. As a band played Denver tunes such as "Rocky Mountain High," "Take Me Home Country Roads" and "Welcome to My Morning," those attending the event at the Alpine Grove Banquet Facility remembered the musician and his message to take care of the environment. Denver supported many environmental and humanitarian organizations in his lifetime, including The Windstar Land Conservancy, Plant-It 2000 and The Hunger Project. "I don't think enough people are interested in what we're doing to our planet long term," said Susan Mason of Gardener, Mass., adding that Denver had a vision the rest of us would be wise to follow. Others said they were similarly moved by the musician, who died last October in a crash of the experimental aircraft he was piloting in California. "I came here because John Denver inspires me," said Janice Gullicksen of Quincy, Mass. "His songs have a lot of meaning." And while Denver's message was of primary importance to some, others said they simply love his music. "It's nice to go someplace and know every single song you hear by heart," said Wendy Baird of Ashby, Mass. "I'm long overdue for a John Denver fix." Established in 1976, the Windstar Land Conservancy is 1,000 acres of land housing a variety of plant and wildlife such as aspen trees and scrub pines as well as deer and elk. Kyle Osborne of New England Windstar Connections described the beauty of the conservancy. "The land is just gorgeous," she said. "It's magical out there." Donations are needed to run the conservancy, to keep up its paths, open its offices, repair the fences and mow the prairie grass. But an event organizer, who estimated 50 people came to the benefit that cost $15 for adults and $6.50 for children, said it was more important to raise awareness than money. "I think as long as we reach one person or raise $1 for one of (Denver's) charities we've had a successful day," said Marcelle Orswell, president of It's About Time, an organization dedicated to supporting Denver's philanthropies. "The most important thing is to get the word out." Members of the band who played his music remembered Denver fondly. "So many people don't know what John Denver was all about," said Miriam Gross, keyboardist of the group of musicians who united for the benefit. "His music was just frosting. It would capture our ears but his message captured out hearts." Vocalist Paul Swanton of Plymouth, MA, first became a fan of Denver's music in 1980 when someone gave him some albums they didn't want anymore. "His songs are from the heart, and they seem to be songs of being human," Swanton said. "I could just relate to them." Some said the event was especially significant for younger people. "Benefits like this are important so that future generations will always be able to enjoy the conservancy," said Osborne. At the very least future generations are already enjoying Denver's music. As they drove to the benefit, Orswell's daughters, Stephanie, 6, and Jenny, 4, asked her to take out the Disney tape they were listening to and put in one of his. And as far as wildlife is concerned, at least one animal directly benefited from the event. Lucy, Gross's 8-year-old Labrador Retriever, proudly showed off the hot dog she helped herself to at the barbecue. = = = = = = Events in Aspen, CO =================== From: Jeanie Tomlinson Hi everyone -> Well, this was a double barreled weekend: The Windstar Connection's Leadership Workshop with Richard Hatch and the planting of the John Denver Sanctuary at the Rio Grande Park. Both were enriching experiences. The City of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteer organization were expecting 160 folks - over 200 came to share stories, music and memories as they put their hands and shovels into the soil in this most aesthestic 4 acres of Rio Grande Park; laced with a wide stream with the water gently flowing over large boulders; an area of rolling small hills and winding paths. The skies were clear (for the most part) and it was hot. There were boom boxes everywhere and a young man who's voice was much like John's (not as powerful) but sang and played beautifully with passion and love. As folks worked and wandered, I don't think I've ever seen so many varieties of John Denver t-shirts in my life - it was fun to see and Annie, Erma and the children were thrilled with the turnout and so moved that so many came from so far - some at great sacrifice. My friend and I attended to a beautiful Aspen on next to the river's edge - we will visit it often. My friend and several others did the bulk of the work, since my arm is slinged, but I have a good left hand, so gave it all I had. In time I should develop quite a left swing :) The ceremony was poetic. Parks Dept. Director; Founder and President of the National Arbor Foundation; The Mayor; Hal Thau; and Annie who expressed her love and appreciation for all. The Mayor read a proclamation which I hope will be published for all to enjoy. As with his impact on the world, I don't think John really understood how many members of the community of Aspen loved him. The layout of the John Denver Sanctuary is one of incredible grace and beauty - as we all knew it would and had to be. A wonderful surprise for us all, was that Annie has donated $25,000.00 for a boulder outcrop amphitheater at the heart of the sanctuary. Words to John's songs will be inscribed on the boulders. This will be a place of so many can enjoy and spend time reflecting and rejoicing. So many folks I spoke with said they would certainly be spending many hours in this once forgotten part of Rio Grande Park. The music that rang through the air was gifted by the EarthBeat Children's Choir (children from the entire Roaring Fork Valley); Ellen and Steve Stapenhorst; Kolleen Sublett and John Sommers. Ellen rendered "The Heart of Love" and the beautiful song that her brother Steve wrote in memory of his friend John Denver. It was the first time John's family had heard it and the tender lyrics were overwhelming for Erma. However, she is such a Warrior Woman, that she opted to remain for the rest of the afternoon, as did Annie, Zak and Anna Kate. It was a true celebration of a life full of love, joy, exploration, some sorrow and pain, but most of all wonderment. What a gift John gave to us while alive and even now in his passing, he is so very much with us all. YES - it was quite a weekend for everyone :) Smiles and hugs.......Jeanie = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = AUGUST IN ASPEN - "A Special Report" from Rocky Mountain High will be sent out separately. You should receive it soon. ============================================== J O H N D E N V E R S T O R I E S ============================================== From: Patricia Brown John Denver and LOVE This evening some friends and I met at our local pub and, as usual, got into some pretty deep subject matter. This evening's topic was "love" and how you define it. I immediately thought of John, although I couldn't bring up his name since I was the only JD fan at the table. After all, only a true JD fan would understand what I'm about to say. John Denver was "love". He exuded love, he sang about love, having love and losing love. John was not in it for the money. He was in it for the moment - a shared moment which made John Denver, and being a John Denver fan, so special. Who else but John himself would have noticed lovers walking hand in hand in a park, and some walking all alone? I've never met any guy who would have noticed that, but our John sure did...He was such a special guy, in our hearts and still living there. ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= From: Mary Ledford There will be a tribute article published in a CO magazine on Sept 20, 1998. John did his best acting when he let his own emotions show through. And seeing John in the Blue Ridge Mountains, he couldn't hide how much he loved being there. He taught us to dream, he taught us to hope, he taught us to love and he taught us to cope. Together we laughed, together we cried, through words and through music we all shared the pride. The days now grow shorter, the nights are so long, but together we stay in the gift of the song. The country boy's magic and love fills us all, together, embraced, we prepare for the fall. In Memory of John Denver July, 1998... George Spendley = = = = THIS SACRED PLACE A Poem by Gaile Linn This sacred ground I walk upon, cathedrals stretching high Every place I set my foot brings memories to my mind My eyes have never seen this wonder, but it feels so very near Can this really be the home I've always held so dear. The trees are reaching up and up to rocky slopes & misty sky Aspen trees and wildflowers, mountaintops where eagles fly Never have I seen this beauty or felt the peace within my soul As I walk the path that leads to crystal lakes from worlds of old Give me time to clear my thoughts, to heal and make my peace within Perhaps I'll find the truth I lost immersed within my sin I've lost before, but never had the sorrow I do now I loved a man who taught me life and all I would allow. Every step I take I feel him coming home to me This sacred place may help me find what plunged into the sea = = = = WWW Pages to check out: * Windsong Gathering - Elsa http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Geyser/1943/windsong98.html * A John Denver Reunion - Aspen in October http://home.earthlink.net/~evergreen2/aspen_home.html * Walnut Valley Music Festival http://www.WVFest.com * Bill's Place, John Denver and More http://members.aol.com/Sponsorlst/index.html * John Denver's Calypso Tour Bus http://www.visao.net/calypso/ * Int'l Center for Tropical Ecology - St. Louis, MO http://www.umsl.edu/~biology/icte/ * Website for Song of the Wind http://betterworld.co.nz/songwind ************************************************************* Rocky Mountain High: The John Denver Internet Fan Club emily@sky.net http://www.sky.net/~emily September 1998 * Issue #53 * Editor: Emily M.
