Tom Crum, a workshop leader and speaker on stress and conflict, was John Denver's best friend and mentor and co-founded Windstar with the singer/songwriter. Tom served as the foundation's executive director from 1979 - 1985. Tom's book features a fictitious character, Angus, who is a type A, conflicted and stressed-out individual in his personal and professional life. "Three Deep Breaths" teaches Angus - and the reader - how to center as an effective approach to relieving stress by living in the moment, how to be the person one wants to be, and how to let go of judgments to live a more fulfilling life. "Three Deep Breaths" can be ordered through Barnes and Nobel and is a blueprint for life! ____________________________________________________________ Barnes & Noble http://www.bn.com <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> <+> Alaska & Me Cruising the Inside Passage on the Sapphire Princess by Lauree Padgett In July, my friend Karen and I had the experience of a lifetime. For eight magical days, we traveled through Alaska by land and by sea, via the Inside Passage. For me, as a JD fan for 30-plus years, what made the trip even more special was the presence of singer Christopher Westfall. For those of you unfamiliar with Chris, he discovered John Denver as a 4-year-old, saw him in concert in Philadelphia in 1976 at age 5 (a concert, we would discover, we both attended!), and considers JD his mentor and a huge inspiration. While he does his own material, as well as other folk singers from the 1970s, including Loggins and Messina, James Taylor, and Dan Fogelberg, Chris especially shines when doing his seemingly endless repertoire of JD tunes. I first saw Chris perform in a coffee house in Marlton, N.J., in 2004 after reading about him in this very newsletter. New Year's Eve 2005, a group of us went to a "First Night" event in my hometown of Haddonfield, N.J., where Chris performed and talked about the cruise to Alaska. Karen and I checked it out and got very excited. Shortly thereafter, we booked our cabin. Back to Chris in a minute, but I wanted to share a little about where the Sapphire Princess cruised. We set off from Vancouver, BC (after having flown across country), on Saturday, July 15. Monday, we dropped anchor in Ketchikan, an old gold mining town. Karen and I went on an excursion to the Rain Forest Wild Life Sanctuary (and as it happened, so did Chris), where we saw dozens of eagles on the ground and in the air. One swooped so low over Chris' head, I swear it had to have been JD saying "hello." Another immature eagle perched on a railing and let our group take picture after picture. To quote JD, it was a far out experience. Other ports were Juneau and Skagway. In Juneau we took a tram high into the mountains and then climbed higher, enjoying breathtaking vistas from all angles. In Skagway, we drove up to the summit (and into Canada), again reveling in the mountains rising up against the most amazing blue sky and sunshine (all through our trip we had exceptional weather). Glacier Bay was awesome, as was College Fjord, although fellow passengers who had been on the same cruise 4 years earlier were devastated at how much of the glaciers here had vanished, leaving lush, green areas where there had once only been ice. After the cruise ended in Whittier, we got the added bonus of spending a day and evening in Anchorage, which was much more of an urban area, although we did get to watch salmon spawning. Chris' first two concerts took place in the Skywalker Lounge, the highest vantage point of the ship that offered spectacular views of the scenery from every seat. We were just leaving Ketchikan that Monday afternoon as Chris started off with "Wrangell Mountain Song." For two hours, he did a great mixture of well-known and not-so-well-known JD songs, as well as a few of his own songs and other folk songs. He finished up with a quite appropriate and rousing rendition of "Alaska and Me." Thursday afternoon as we were about to leave Glacier Bay, Chris had a bit of competition, as three humpback whales pulled along side the ship just after his concert started. Highlights of this performance included three of my all-time favorite JD songs: "My Sweet Lady," "Wild Montana Skies," and "Perhaps Love." Friday, thanks to some quick footwork by his friend Judy Therrien, Chris got to perform in the first level of the absolutely gorgeous, three-tiered lobby, resplendent with marble floors and two sets of spiral, marble stairs. There was also a baby grand, and while Chris mostly played his guitars, he did do three songs, "For You," "How Great Thou Art," and "What One Man Can Do" at the piano. The lobby was very active, as you might imagine, but almost everyone who was passing through stopped to listen to Chris' beautiful voice. "Take Me Home Country Roads" really brought in a crowd, and he had everyone singing to "Follow Me" and "Annie's Song." So, if you get the chance to go to Alaska, go! I can't wait to go back. And, if you ever have the chance to see Chris Westfall in concert, don't pass him up. See if he's going to be anywhere near you at his Web site: http://www.chriswestfall.com. Lauree Padgett < lpadgett@infotoday.com > ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R P O E T R Y ======================================= Somewhere In Time by Cynthia Helen Gullage Somewhere in time, I think I may have found you, in a long ago and lovely memory. We sit beside a Rocky Mountain river. You strum your old guitar, and sing for me. Your voice soars high, becomes one with the night wind, transporting me to far Australian shores, to Red Rocks in beloved Colorado, and Jasper's meadows, where you ride once more. I feel those Shanghai breezes on my shoulders. I reach and touch a Springtime columbine. I miss you in a thousand different moments I never will forget you, Friend of mine. When snow descends, and dresses all the pine trees, I find you in the Starwood home you loved. Your voice still sings, but now it's with the angels, and you've found PEACE, in heavenly spheres above. __________________________________________ Copyright 8-26-06 by Cynthia Helen Gullage ======================================= J O H N D E N V E R N O T E S ======================================= "Don't Close Your Eyes Tonight" video http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/denver_john/artist.jhtml - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Flying with John! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m323jFTEO74 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michael Chandler, the author of "The Littlest Cowboy's Christmas" will be offering books and doing a book signing at the "Let This Be A Voice" event on October 14, 2006 in Aspen, Colorado. / You can write to him at michaelchandler@sopris.net - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ================================================= JOHN DENVER W A N T A D S / F O R S A L E ================================================= - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "The Littlest Cowboy's Christmas" (Hardcover book) by Michael Chandler / Terry Jacobsen (illustrator), John Denver (performer). $10.37 at http://www.amazon.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Curtis Griffy < Curtis.Griffy@guidant.com > I am looking for volunteers to join me for a work detail in the John Denver Sanctuary on October 12, 2006 9:00am to Noon. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Carol Blevins has some John Denver T-Shirts, JD Calendars and John Denver lapel pins. blevins@epix.net Carol Blevins / 1213 River Road / Quarryville, PA 17566 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fred < fredsue@comcast.net > John's last film was "Savant" which starred an actress named Ruthann Debona.
