ONE MAN'S LEGACY
   Quilt World Magazine
   September 2002, Vol. 27, No. 5

A sudden death can leave friends and relatives reeling
from the loss. When singer John Denver was killed tragically
in a plane crash, friends, family and fans were left with
nothing but memories and his songs.
John had spent his life working for peace and the
environment. He co-founded the Windstar Foundation in 1976
to teach about conservation. He was a gentle soul who wished
for peace and worked toward this goal.
While trying to come to terms with their loss, friends
wanted to mark his many accomplishments. They heard about a
project called "A Cloth of Many Colors". The idea was to
collect swatches of fabric from people all over the world.
These pieces would be sewn together into larger panels to
eventually form an enormous quilt. The quilt would symbolize
the prayers and wishes for peace of all who contributed to and
worked on the quilt. The dream was for the quilt to become
large enough to wrap around the United Nations Building. The
building would be blanketed with the hopes and dreams for
peace from around the world.
Debra Chilton was an original member of this group. She
realized that those who wished to memorialize John Denver
wanted to contribute to this project. From this outpouring of
emotion, The John Denver Memorial Peace Cloth was born. The
project took on a life of its own. Pieces and panels arrived
from around the world. It quickly became a 3-foot-wide
tapestry more than 1,000 feet long, and it is still growing.
Pieces of the cloth are currently traveling around the
world. Hosts display the cloth and add sections along with
their prayers for peace. Panels of the cloth have blanketed
the podium at the United Nations, encircled the annual Prayer
Vigil for the Earth on the mall in Washington, D.C. warmed the
icy landscape of the North Pole and the entire cloth served as
a reminder of John Denver's ideals at the Windstar Foundation
in Snowmass, Colorado.
In the spring of 2001, the Peace Cloth was part of Care by
Celebrating Children's Day at Buckingham Elementary in Bucks
County, PA. This group is working to mark April 20 as a day to
honor the great things kids do in school every day. They
believe school children are capable of amazing things. It was
a perfect match for them to host the quilt. The children
worked so hard designing their pieces and learning to sew. It
was exciting to see them learn the art of quilting and, at the
same time, realize that one man's life can make a difference.
A separate kids' quilt was created during the event. This
contribution became the first section of the John Denver
Memorial Children's Peace Cloth - a separate quilt made
entirely of children's work that tours with the main cloth.
Donations are still accepted for the Peace Cloth. You may
create a piece in any length but no wider than 36" so that it
can be kept to a standard. The founders ask for your design to
include your hopes and dreams for peace. It can be as simple
as saying a prayer for peace while you sew. Many contributors
have used John's lyrics and images in their pieces, but let
your contribution be a reflection of what feels appropriate to
you. Donations to the cloth may be sent to Peace Cloth, c/o
Lana Zinkon, P.O. Box 91, Baltic, OH 43804.
Quilting has long been a way to mark important events in
people's lives. The Peace Cloth is a way for the gentle art of
quilting to commemorate a life and work to bring peace to our
world.

Editor's Note: The Peace Cloth is currently creating a panel
to honor all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Special donations for this panel may be sent to Debra Chilton,
2817 NE 48th St., Vancouver, WA 98663

Review of Saratoga Springs, NY
   John Denver Remembrance Day Weekend
           by Darcey Anne Farrow

Even before Friday, August 9th the night of the dinner at
my house, I was busy preparing for the JD weekend. I was so
very excited even though I had no confirmation of people
coming save for the few I knew about. The night of the dinner,
I had the food ready and waiting when my guests arrived. Turns
out it was just my family which consisted of my two older
nieces, Sandra and Kristina, myself and my mum. Then came
Kayla with her mum Floss and my picnic partner, Meg. We had a
nice Thanksgiving style dinner and for dessert we ate
chocolate boxes. These are a bit messy, but delicious just the
same. We played John's melodious music throughout and had a
wonderful, relaxing time.
On August 10th, Saratoga Spa State Park was very quiet
with just a few joggers and dog walkers. After we finished
with the set up, we waited for people to arrive. The day was
beautiful with no rain and just a touch of warming heat. We
sat around listening to JD while we rested and talked. For the
most part, the day went well even with only 14 people there.
The attendees list is as follows: Myself, my mum, my nieces
Sandra, Kristina, Angelica, Amber, my cousin Gabe, Meg, Meg's
mum Barbara, Lorraine, her hubby Skip, Floss, Kayla and Mary.
We played JD's music first by CD player until it gave out,
then switched over to my cassette player so we were not
without John's music. I brought board games, a badminton set,
a frisbee and a mat for laying down. I even brought my slam
book, a Q & A book about people's likes. It was fun to sign,
but better still to read what everyone wrote. Later on we left
to go to Meg's house for the campfire.
On Sunday morning we met at the Golden Corral Buffet at
10:30am to have brunch. Most of us had breakfast, but there
were a few of us that had to have steak. We sat, we ate and we
relaxed. Then all of a sudden 3 of us noticed the radio began
playing Calypso! That was Far Out!! None of us wanted to say
"Goodbye Again" but we knew that the end of a beautiful
weekend was coming to a close.

Review of "Rocky Mountain High: A Tribute to John Denver"
                    (1997) CMH Records
                          by Emily M. Parris

If you like Bluegrass, you'll like this easy-going salute
to John Denver. Some interesting instruments like a Hammered
Dulcimer, Mandolin, Dobro and a Bottleneck Slide Guitar give
this cd an interesting sound that is totally unlike other John
Denver or John Denver Tribute recordings. It is an
all-instrumental cd.
"Annie's Song" is one of my favorites on the cd. The
guitar is kind of mournful and solemn as it plays solo at the
beginning of the song. "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" has a totally
different sound which makes it an interesting cut. "I'm
Sorry" is also very nice. The strings-only instrumentation
complements it nicely.
"Sunshine On My Shoulders" is done with high energy for a
very different interpretation. I really like the bluegrass
version of "Some Days Are Diamonds" too. It has a bar room
feel and sounds as though it would be a good song for a slow
dance.
"Back Home Again" is one of my favorite songs. I can
always just imagine driving up the long grades of a highway
in Colorado when I hear the song. And the version on this cd
does not disappoint. The cd ends with "Take Me Home, Country
Roads" and this version is very nice. Some of John's best
songs are on this album, with a very different, relaxing
sound. I think anyone who loves John Denver and also loves
Blue Grass will enjoy this instrumental cd.

with his friend, Marcy Cody. Peter resides in Sunnyvale,
California. He and Marcy were witnesses to our marriage at the
Little Chapel of the Cuddles in Las Vegas. The date was August
25, 2002 which is also Jim's birthday. So we will have two
things to celebrate each year. We had a wonderful time in Las

Sing One More Song For Me
              by Margaret Moores

Sing one more song for me,
Sing it loud,
Sing it clear,
And please, do sing it strong

Let me hear your song
as I climb majestic mountains,
Let me see an eagle fly
above the stormy sea,

John Henry, sing one more song for me

      Changing Seasons
              by Emily M. Parris

The leaves of autumn fade and fall
The summer has ended. It is gone.
With melancholy I miss the summer days
As I look at my withered lawn

But then I think of the days to come
When Halloween and Thanksgiving will arrive
The tender days of the Christmas season
The sweet Aspenglow that makes me feel alive

And after that a new year full of promise
Full of things we've never seen before
It's hard when the seasons change...
But often the new one promises so much more
